25.01.2022 ACL REHAB . . Bridging exercises are great for engaging the posterior chain of muscles down the back of the leg, and your set up and determine which muscles you will bias. .... . For example, having your shoulders on a bench with the feet flat on the floor, biases your glute musculature. . . Conversely, having your heels on the bench, and body on the floor, forces the hamstring muscle group to be the prime mover. Positioning and set up is important. . . You need to have a 90* angle both at the hip and knee joints. From there, pull DOWN through the heels. If your feet rest on the edge of the box, you will be inclined to press up into the movement, biasing your quads, instead of pulling down through your heel and engaging the hamstrings. . . Make sure your set up and positioning for each exercise will best serve your desire outcome for that movement. Paced by The Batman and with Snelly on nutrition duties out on course, there was nothing left to it, but to do it. . . 23.01.2022 WEIGHTED OVERHEAD SIT-2-STANDS . . These are a great exercise to improve midback strength, even though its a squat movement. .... . The reasoning behind this is because as we go from sitting to standing, the trunk will lean forwards as a counterbalance to help the hips lift up into standing. As the trunk leans forward, the long lever of the arms holding the weight plate shift horizontally further away from its fulcrum, or pivot point, of the shoulder joint, creating a much larger torque force. Larger force trying to create a movement, requires a greater muscular demand to PREVENT the movement occurring. . . PHYSICS AND MECHANICS. . . 22.01.2022 MOVEMENT CORRECTION. . . Technique and proper movement patterns are important in not only injury prevention, but also maximising performance. .... . Take the movement, the clean, for example. Here we have @charlie_jiaplin thrusting the bar away from his body, creating an inefficient movement, and a non-vertical bar path. While this movement will be okay with a light weight, it will only take him so far in his Olympic lifting and he will plateau. In the second video, we have corrected his movement with some verbal cues to create a more linear and vertical bar path, thus creating a more efficient movement which will help him lift more weight in the future. . . 19.01.2022 NON-SPECIFIC LOW BACK PAIN Surely going to ruffle some feathers with this one, but it needs to be said. A diagnosis of non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is neglect to our clients. Its lazy, its not helpful, and its just not correct. If you as a Health Professional are unable to assess a client to determine a specific directional preference for movement and pain, or are unable to determine a mechanism/reason for a persons low back pain, then you need to refer them on to a Health Professional that can do so. Physics matter. Movement matters. Biomechanics matter.

18.01.2022 GLUTE STABILITY . . Having good single leg stability is extremely important, especially in sports with lots of running. .... . BUT... . . WHAT muscles are YOU using to predominantly help you stay balanced and stable on a single leg? . . Many runners and endurance athletes come to the clinic and present with lower limb issues, injuries, and pain in their calf, achilles, and plantar fascia, purely from overloading these structures working consistently too hard during their training. . . This often comes as a result of a muscular imbalance, or weakness, higher up the chain ie GLUTES! . . We test these clients for single leg stability firstly standing on their feet, which they often manage well, with their ankle shifting back and forwards rapidly to maintain upright balance. . . Take the ankle out of the equation, and what happens? . . NO BALANCE, NO STABILITY! . . In this video, we have Triathlete Mick showing us one of the exercises we use to help improve hip strength and stability for runners, while being able to take the ankle out of the equation. This forces the hip to work hard and get stronger in order to maintain balance and stability for this drill, IF they are cued correctly for positioning. . . 18.01.2022 CLIENT SUCCESS . . I couldnt be prouder of this woman! When Jo @jokiwichick first came to see me almost a year ago, she was desperate. Shed had constant hip pain for almost 5 years, getting so bad to the point she couldnt sleep more than 2-3 hours each night. She had seen physios who had just massaged and needled her and gave her stretches, she had seen chiros, she had seen specialist orthopaedic surgeons and sports doctors, shed had injections, and all to no avail. T...he next step recommended was surgery to her nerves that supplied and innervated the hip region, to essentially burn and cauterise these nerves so they stopped sending pain signals to her brain. That is when her daughter Aimee @aimeecathrin told her to see me for one last try to help her. . . We didnt massage her, we didnt needle her, we didnt give her stretches, we didnt send her for injections or recommend surgeries. No. . . WE STRENGTHENED HER! . . Not once had Jo had a Health Professional take her into a gym environment and test how her body moved, tested to see where she was strong, tested to see where she was weak, tested to see what was actually going on with her body and her function. . . Very quickly we discovered there were things we could work on slowly and gradually over a period of time, to STRENGTHEN that which was weak and causing all this pain. . . She knew it would be tough, she knew it would take time and effort. But! Fast forward 6 months, and Jo was sleeping throughout the night, not even thinking about the pain throughout her day, and even started running again! . . This week Jo came in and told me she didnt know how to jump, and wanted to learn how to move and use her body in a way she never had, and never thought was possible for her. She was scared, but she was determined! We started small, and worked up together to then smash out an 18 box jump! . . Jo, Im so incredibly proud of where you have come from where you first started, and it has been such a privilege to be able to help you get this far. Heres to many more milestones to come! See more

In the first photo we have my client demonstrating bending forwards while thinking about trying to keep his back as straight as possible. . . In the second photo, we have his corrective position we trained him to learn to adopt in order to engage more muscles, move better, and alleviate his back pain. . . He said this position felt extremely foreign to him and he had no idea how to move and tilt his hips in order to change the angle of curve through his back and he bends forwards. Straight away he commented on how he feels a decrease in bad lower back tension, and a feeling of being more strong and stable while bent forwards, and felt as though he could hold it for much longer. . . 08.01.2022 RUNNING ASSESSMENTS . . If youre getting pain with running, maybe its time to get a running and biomechanics assessment to figure out if it has something to do with HOW you run. .... . Jamee came in with knee pain running anything more than 2.5km. After assessing her running pattern, we picked up on a couple of things. . . 1. She was over-striding, meaning she was landing on her foot too far in front of her body, thus increasing the ground reaction forces pushing back towards her up the leg. . . 2. She was heel striking. Now, heel striking alone isnt necessarily a bad strike pattern for running, depending on how far the strike on the ground is in front of the knee joint. However, a heel strike pattern typically causes knee joint issues when over-striding, wheres a forefoot/midfoot strike pattern when over-striding typically causes plantar fascia and achilles tendon issues. . . Two weeks later, and after beginning some run-specific strength work into Jamees gym plan and incorporating some running drills, she is now running further distances without getting any pain!! . . Thoracic lordosis is when someones midback becomes too extended, or flattened, and causes some issues such as pain, restricted movement particularly into rotation, and/or winging scapulas. .... . Jess @jessgreen_coach came into the clinic wanting to work on improving her posture and her functionality, and begin the process of correcting her winging scapulas. This is one of the exercises we used. . . Reaching exercises, where the emphasis is placed on wrapping the shoulder blade around the chest wall, are a great way to begin strengthening of the muscles that prevent the scapulas from tilting off the chest wall, specifically the Serratus Anterior muscle. . . Completing this reaching exercise in this stance set up allows the anterior oblique sling to work more effectively, which is essential for improving someones biomechanics. . . If you want to improve your bodys functionality and biomechanics, basic gym exercises are a good start to helping build baseline strength, but then you MUST be doing some form of training with respect to evolutionary human movement ie walking/running. Sling system training is a great way of doing just that.
