13.01.2022 THE USE OF AN HF OR CB RADIO MICROPHONE WHILST DRIVING. In December 2019 I sent an email enquiry to Transport for NSW via their website regarding the handheld use of HF Radio microphones whilst driving (ie. whilst mobile) in light of rules regarding the handheld use of phones whilst driving and huge new fines in NSW if you are caught. I pointed out that many two way radio handsets incorporate active displays as well as numerous control keys, beside the PTT button. (NSW now ha...s phone detection cameras to capture images of people using mobile phones whilst behind the wheel.) Below is their response. ************************* Thank you for taking the time to contact Transport for NSW. Fully licensed drivers and motorcyclists, including bicycle riders can use a mobile phone as a drivers aid, navigational aid, to make or answer a phone call or for audio playing functions (e.g. music) if the phone is: o in a cradle fixed to the vehicle and doesn't obscure their view of the road o can be operated without touching any part of the phone, such as via Bluetooth or voice activation. While driving or riding you cannot use your mobile phone for anything else, including: o Texting or audio texting o Emailing o Using social media o Taking photos o Video messaging Similar rules have been in place for over 20 years. Under this rule mobile phone does not include a CB radio or any other two-way radio. Recently NSW announced it would be the first jurisdiction in the world to use automated camera etechnology to detect and enforce illegal mobile phone use. Following a trial in 2018 and a three months of operation warning period, from 1 March 2020 drivers caught using their phones illegally by the mobile phone detector cameras will receive five demerit points and a $344 fine ($457 in a school zone). The penalty increases to 10 demerit points during double-demerit periods. The rules which apply to mobile phone use do not apply to CB radios or any other two-way radio (such as an HF radio). However a driver using a radio must still be in proper control of the vehicle at all times or fines may apply. Prior to any warning letter or infringement being issued as part of the Mobile Phone Detection Camera Program, all images are checked by an authorised officer to verify the device. Yours sincerely,

13.01.2022 No smart comments please

13.01.2022 Your scribe was at a meeting today of Sydney area HF listening enthusiasts. Note this was NOT an HFRC member meeting. There was much comment about current and worsening noise on the HF bands. Apart from just high background (hash) noise (in my case now around 43dBuV on my Codan Yellowface handset display) much comment was about "hum" which I was cursed with immediately after NBN FTTC was turned on in my Sydney suburban street. The "hum" ceased at one stage and then suddenly returned with a vengeance, Just as suddenly it has now gone. I am reporting about suburban interference. Anecdotally, noise levels outside suburbia are higher than in the past, but are still quite bearable.

08.01.2022 Happy Hour at Barmera

08.01.2022 Lending a helping hand via a HF Phone call or SMS. Hi everyone and a Happy New Year to you all. Bushfires have devastated many small towns and areas in SE Austr...alia as well as destroying power and telecommunications infrastructure. I do not know how much damage has been done outside of NSW, but in NSW's south east several major highways are closed in full or in part between Nowra, the town of Milton, further south towards the Victorian border and east of Cooma towards Bega. Many people are currently unable to leave coastal holiday and local communities due to local road closures in addition to highway closures. There are also problems in eastern Victoria. To compound the issue critical mains power infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged leading to the failure of mains dependant telecommunications equipment. As at 1100 EDST January 1st 2020, twenty nine Telstra mobile towers in the area between Nowra and Milton have lost their power, and backup power at sites has been exhausted. I do not know about other telecommunications networks. Many thousands of people whilst currently safe, are totally isolated from the Princess Highway, which is their escape route, due to still burning fires and fallen burnt trees. These people have no communications as it has been stated that in addition to failure of the mobile phone system, exchange power has also failed taking out landline and NBN services. Any HFRC member in the affected area who can assist any person by offering to make phone calls to relatives on their behalf is urged to do so. Similarly sending SMSs to assist. It won't cost the member anything and the HFRC should be able to shoulder the costs of many phone calls and SMSs without them exceeding our monthly phone and data limits. If you can help, please assist. We HF equipped people with phone and SMS access could be of great assistance to many currently unable to contact "home" to leave a message that they are safe. Please be aware of SKED times. Stay safe. Barry Smith, President HFRC See more
