19.01.2022 Here is the final mystery object for 2017. Something to ponder during the summer holiday!
19.01.2022 The Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum has many dental extraction instruments in its collection, from early to contemporary dentistry. Featured here is a replica dental pelican, bone-holding forceps and two different dental extracting keys. These and other gruesome objects can be seen alongside the dental cartoons still showing at the Medical History Museum as part of the 'It's a Gas!' exhibition, on until 17 December.
18.01.2022 After a temporary closure, the Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum recently re-opened its newly refurbished permanent exhibition space. Amongst the changes are freshly painted walls, a timeline of the history of dentistry, and collection objects illustrating the themes of dentures, early dentistry, conservative dentistry, dentistry in World War I, teaching, outreach and innovation. Here are some photos but come and see the real thing between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
18.01.2022 Dentists, and more importantly their patients, judge the success of dentures on comfort, good looks and how well they work. This kind of win-win outcome doesnt... just happen. Its dependent on great skill, the best design, and the highest standards of clinical care. Today, 20 dentists from Victoria and beyond are further honing their denture dexterity by attending Removable Prosthodontics: A Refresher, one of Melbourne Dental Schools full program of continuous professional development (CPD) courses, including lectures and hands-on work in new, state of the art labs led by at-the-top-of-their game Drs: Gaurika Sud, Jaafar Abduo, Vahed Parzham, and Hadeel Ibrahim. Discerning dentists looking to complete their annual 30-hours of CPD can check out MDSs 2018 program here: https://goo.gl/oFdpde.
18.01.2022 And our mystery object is....Young's adjustable perforators. These were used for punching double holes when making denture plates. This example was made in around 1900, and created evenly spaced pin positions in the plate.
17.01.2022 University of Melbourne Open Day is on this Sunday 19 August. The Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum will be open from 10am to 4pm and a tour of the permanent collection display will take place at 11.30am. Come along and see what we do! https://henryformanatkinsondentalmuseum.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/

14.01.2022 As you may have noticed, the exhibition 'It's a Gas! Dentistry & Cartoons' is still on at the Medical History Museum; it has been extended to the 29th October. So you have another chance to laugh at images such as this one, created by Colin Robertson and published in The Bulletin on 12 September 1952.

11.01.2022 The Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum recently re-opened its newly refurbished permanent exhibition space with a launch on Wednesday 26 October. Professor Mike Morgan, Head of the Melbourne Dental School, opened the event and guests included family members of the late Professor Henry Forman Atkinson. Neville Regan was presented with an award for volunteering at the museum since the mid-1990s. Jacqueline Healy, Senior Curator, HFA Dental museum thanked all the academics and... students who had contributed to the redevelopment of the museum. Amongst the changes to the Museum are an orange colour scheme, a timeline of the history of dentistry, and collection objects and didactic panels illustrating the themes of innovation, outreach, dentistry in World War 1, early dentistry, women in dentistry, tooth care and dentures. Photos are courtesy of the University of Melbourne Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Events.
