23.01.2022 Most Heart Foundation Walking Groups are back! Due to COVID-19, we unfortunately had to press pause on all walking groups to protect our walkers, volunteers and the community from virus transmission. Due to the easing of restrictions, we are happy to announce that as of today, most walking groups are eligible to resume as usual. Please contact your groups Walking Organiser, as not all will be qualified to continue, based on size and whether all members feel comforta...ble to begin. Anyone participating must comply with the Heart Foundation Walking COVID-19 Safety Plan that can be found below. If you are not currently in a group but have found your feet during lockdown, we encourage you to continue walking as restrictions begin to ease and to consider joining a Heart Foundation Walking Group. With more than 1200 Heart Foundation Walking Groups across the country, and research showcasing the importance of 30 minutes of physical activity a day for heart health, we recommend locating a group in your area. 20.01.2022 In light of the rapidly unfolding situation with Covid-19, and primary consideration for the health and wellbeing of our walkers, all Heart Foundation Walking groups will pause until the end of May. We encourage you to stay active during this period with physical activity around the house, walking on your own, catching up on the gardening, Spring cleaning or even discovering a new hobby. Please don't hesitate to email our Walking team at [email protected] with any questions.

13.01.2022 Steve Dyson has been a Walk Organiser with the Heart Foundations Burnie Brae Walking Group in Brisbane for the last 14 years. Over that time has participated in over 2000 group walks! We visited the Burnie Brae Walking Group last week to celebrate this amazing achievement and joined the group on a scenic walk. Our volunteers are the reason Heart Foundation Walking has helped so many Australians stay active and take care of their heart health. They are the glue that holds our walking groups together - thank you

08.01.2022 A common question we're asked is "How long should I be walking for every day?" Answer: We recommend all adults aged 18-64 years should aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Thats 30 minutes on five days of the week. Its considered moderate if it takes some effort, but youre still able to talk comfortably. If you cant find time for a 30-minute walk, try breaking your 30 minutes of walking into three 10-minute sessions on each of 5 days, is just... as beneficial as doing the 30 minutes in one go! 08.01.2022 Linda's walking story is a moving one Thanks so much for sharing it with us. "The Heart Foundation walking app gave me courage to help myself recover from stage 3 bowel cancer surgery and chemotherapy. My surgeon and oncologist both suggested I get up and move around as soon as I felt I could. I started with 100 steps a day and gradually managed 1,000,000 steps in last year's challenge. It was hard work, but I did it. After five operations to date, walking has helped me through each surgery. I will always have issues and a permanent Stoma, but I consider myself to be as fit and healthy as I can be. My husband Richard, sister Sandy, and friend Jenny are my walking team. Walking has certainly improved my physical & mental health and has given me something to look forward to every day."

06.01.2022 Declan is an avid walker and loves participating in a challenge! Here's his story: "At 76 years of age, I am still a keen walker. It keeps the blood flowing which is important for me with a history of angina. Five days before the challenge in July was due to commence, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was intending to take part in the Challenge and this cancer diagnosis reinforced my intention. I completed 100,000 steps early on the last morning. The Challenge helped ...take my mind off the diagnosis as I walked along the tracks close to home and tuned in to Pink Floyd. Apart from that form of relaxation I knew that the steps were keeping me fit for what lies ahead. I commence radiotherapy in two weeks, and Ill be walking up until that date, walking through my weeks of treatment and walking afterwards, keeping my mind and body, and particularly my heart, as fit as possible." Thanks for sharing your story with us Declan, we hope your treatment goes well
04.01.2022 Meet Gordon He's one of our walkers and doesn't shy away from a step challenge! Here's his story: "I had a stroke 2 years ago, which was partly caused by a hole in my heart. After I got that repaired I initially lost weight, but then I gained it back. I started seriously walking in January 2019 and have walked over 2000 kilometres since I downloaded the Heart Foundation App to do the Challenges and it has helped me stay focused. A real advantage is that I have also lost 20... kilograms in weight and my health and fitness has improved greatly. I am going back to my heart specialist soon for a check-up and am looking forward to showing him how walking has transformed me, as he told me I needed to lose weight. My heartfelt thanks goes to the Heart Foundation." Has a step challenged helped you? Share it in the comments below

03.01.2022 Gaye loves to explore Australia on her walks Here's her story: "A family history of heart disease, creeping weight gain in my middle years, and a love of walking and the great Australian outdoors has led me to increase my fitness through more walking. I have been encouraged to use the Heart Foundation Walking app and my Fitbit to help me reach my goals! Retirement has meant travelling the grey nomad trail, exploring beaches, rainforests, and walking the dog. Time is a pre...cious commodity, not to be wasted or reduced by a sedentary lifestyle and the Heart Foundation website is a stark reminder of how important it is to move and look after our body as we age. Loving life and challenging my fitness levels through doing an activity I love in an outdoor environment is very special. Thanks to the Heart Foundation for your support and encouragement." 02.01.2022 Michele is 73, and has some problems with her right leg, but that doesn't stop her from walking twice a day! Here's her story: "I walk on my own, but always meet up with fellow walkers during the walk. I have entered all the Heart Foundation Walking challenges and feel great about what I have achieved. Most of my walking is along the waterfront, on the beach, or on bridges and footpaths. I listen to my radio whilst walking. I have also lost weight and live a healthy life. Thank you to the Heart Foundation for giving us the incentive to always strive to improve our fitness." Why do you love walking? Tell us in the comments below
