24.01.2022 Disappointing Loss In a to-and-fro game yesterday, the Lions suffered a tough loss 22-17 to Sandy Bay rivals Tasmanian University Rugby Union Football Club. The Lions started well but were unable to capitalise on opportunities. Robbie Casboult and Ian Clack kept the scoreboard ticking, but lapses in defensive concentration kept Uni in the game. ... Uni showed solid defence and played a smart field game. Congratulations to the Redmen on the win. Lions will hit the training field again this week determined to correct a few errors. Finals are still strongly on the cards for the young Lions, who are yet to put in a complete performance. There is a great feeling amongst the team, they are not far away from bringing it all together. The Lions take on perennial finalists Taroona in a Friday night game this week. 19.01.2022 A Try Fest! The Lions have cemented third place on the Tasmanian Rugby Union Premier Division ladder with a commanding 43 - 27 victory over Hobart Harlequins Rugby Union Club on Saturday. The Lions looked to improve on their previous weeks performances, especially converting attacking opportunities. The Lions finished better this week and were ultimately rewarded with bonus point win.... The Lions looked to use the width early and made great inroads through scything runs by William Clack and Blaine Doust. Half back Jack Weeding and Centre Jason Hall threatened the line and linked well with the outside runners. The pack, led by Jono Elliot, were industrious around the field and worked hard to contain the Quins big runners. Loose forwards Isaac Nugent and Robbie Casboult were pests to the opposition all day. Brendon Elliot was crucial in the Lions lineout dominance. The Quins were able to stay within threatening reach through their direct hard lines and physical pressure. However, the relentless Lions attacking raids and accumulated points through converted tries proved too much to overcome. Thank you to the Quins and the Canteen at Rugby Park for hosting the game and providing refreshments. A big thank you to our supporters and 2019 - 2020 sponsors Prince of Wales Hotel Frank's Cider Energy Solutions GTT Heartwood Malt Whisky Hutchins School Old Boys' Association Next week the Lions travel up the Midland and Bass Hwys to take on Devonport Bulls Rugby Union Club. Devonport are the undefeated top of the table, and the reigning premiers.....it will be a big clash!
17.01.2022 Tomorrow the Lions are heading up the highway to play the top of the table Devonport Bulls Rugby Union Club. The Lions are fired up after only going down by 5 points in their first encounter. The lads have had a good week of training, including a wild wet weather session last night. Kick off at 230 pm at Maidstone Park, Spreyton. Please note the earlier start time and changed location. ... We know it is a long drive, but we would love to see some support on the side lines and some extra people to cheer on a win!
17.01.2022 Tough Day at the Office! The Lions were beaten 15 - 5 in an arm wrestle of a match with Taroona Rugby Club this weekend. The Lions struck early, through young talent Blaine Doust. But a series of missed opportunities and errors with the boot resulted in no conversions and a charge down try. 5 - 5 at the break.... The Lions had plenty of attacking opportunities but couldn't secure the prolonged possession to cross the line. The Penguins used their bulk and experience to grind out the win in the last 5 minutes of the match. Congratulations to the Taroona team. The Lions will lick their wounds and turn it around this week. Saturday 15th August we travel to Eady Street to take on the Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club Tasmania Stags. It will be a hotly contested match. We would love to see plenty of Lions supporters at the ground cheering the lads on. A big thank you to our supporters and 2019 - 2020 sponsors Prince of Wales Hotel Frank's Cider Energy Solutions GTT Heartwood Malt Whisky Hutchins School Old Boys' Association Thanks again to to Tasmanian Rugby Union and DUFF TV for recording the match. You can find all the recorded games so far this year ... together with the interesting commentary on DUFF TV's youtube channel.
16.01.2022 Character building win! Last night the young Lions took on perennial front runners Taroona Rugby Club in a Friday night game at Rugby Park. Thanks to the Tasmanian Rugby Union and all involved who recently improved the lighting at Rugby Park. It was a great night...despite the inclement weather.... The Lions were looking to improving on two weeks of disappointing performances. With coaches and senior players asking for a greater commitment and discipline from the group. The game was an arm wrestle to say the least! The Penguins defence and structure was solid, with Lions only really dominating at the scrum....but it wasn't easy. The Lions were able to build pressure and contain Taroona for most of the first half, frustrating the Penguins. The Lions crossed over for an unconverted try, after a series of strong forwards dominated phases. They maintained attacking field position for long periods but were unable to come away with any points. Taroona do not concede and after some solid counter ruck and accurate kicking found themselves on the front foot with a scrum 5m out. The converted the possession into an unconverted try. Half time 5-5. In the second half Taroona improved in the tight five and it was a real physical contests between the two teams for 40mins. The game was going to come down to who faltered first. Fortunately the Lions scrum regained its dominance and was able to create some opportunities that eventually led to a Lions penalty with a few minutes to spare. Ian Clack stepped up and slotted the goal, under pressure from the heckling home crowd. The Lions nosed in front and held their nerve for an 8 - 5 victory. A hard earned victory and standard setting performance from the Lions. The lads definitely enjoyed a Frank's Cider in the shed after...with plenty resting some sore bodies this weekend. A big thank you to our supporters and 2019 - 2020 sponsors Prince of Wales Hotel Frank's Cider Energy Solutions GTT Heartwood Malt Whisky Hutchins School Old Boys' Association We couldn't do what we do without the support of these wonderful people, as well as our Lions family and supporters. Thank you! Next week we have a home game at WMO.....back at the The Lions take on Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club in a potentially semi-finals deciding game. 3pm Kick Off Saturday. Lets get a HUGE (within COVID-19 regulations) crowd there to support the lads run into the finals.

He is excited to see everyone and thank everyone at the presentation dinner in 2 weeks...and have the camping soon!
12.01.2022 Finals Footy Locked In! On a stunning spring day at the WMO the Lions locked in their spot in the Tasmanian Rugby Union finals with a hard fought bonus point win over the Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club. The last encounter with the Stags was a close affair, and the aim of the Lions was to go 2 from 2, which has not happened for a number of years. The Lions focus was to close down the Stags mid field attacking threats and make use of space out wide with their young speedst...ers. The ground conditions were perfect for free flowing rugby, and the Lions were buoyed by a solid crowd cheering them on! The Stags, also looking to lock in a semi final slot, came to play and the first half was a tight and physical tussle, with the half time scores 10:10. The Lions had scored two unconverted tries, to the Stags converted try and penalty. The only noticeable edge in the first half was to the Lions pack, who continue to create front foot ball for the Lions with strong scrumming and line-out performances. Coach Killian demanded a better performance in the second half, and ball players Ian Clack and William Edwards settled into a rhythm. They kicked with accuracy to the corners, allowing the set piece to start to break down the opposition. The Lions continued to build momentum and series of converted penalties, a converted try to Ian Clack and a penalty try pushed the score to 30. The Stags continued to attack and were bravely held out by scrambling defence from the Lions. The Stags scored late into the second half but the deficit was too much. The final score was 30:15. Votes for the Lions were Aleem Khalfan and Brendon Elliot with a point shared for their work organising the pack. William Edwards directing the team at 10 scored 2 votes and Ian Clacks dangerous runs and cool kicking under pressure had him best on field with 3 votes. A big thank you to our supporters and 2019 - 2020 sponsors Prince of Wales Hotel Frank's Cider Energy Solutions GTT Heartwood Malt Whisky and Tasmanian Independent Bottlers Hutchins School Old Boys' Association We couldn't do what we do without the support of these wonderful people, as well as our Lions family and supporters. Let's finish of the year with another strong sized (within COVID-19 regulations) crowd there to support the Lions! photo thanks to Andrew Kruup
12.01.2022 Lions taking momentum and confidence into the finals! Amongst patchy rain and sunshine at the WMO on Saturday, the Lions secured a solid win over Hobart Harlequins Rugby Union Club The Lions aimed to build momentum into the finals, tune their attack and stiffen up the defence. The Quins needed to win this game to make the finals. The Lions were focused and prepared.... In a tight first half, the Lions maintained the majority of possession but could not convert it to points. A penalty goal to Ian Clack started the scoreboard ticking. The Lions started to move the Quins forwards around and finding gaps around the defender. Possession and momentum resulted in the Lions scoring two tries through dominant forward play around the park. One to B-Dog an the other to Leon. The Lions had a 15 - 0 lead at half time. The Quins came out in the second half looking to up the tempo. They straightened their attack and found a bit more success. They scored early in the half....the Lions had to respond. Coach Killian at half time encouraged the team to continue build pressure through multiple phases and trust the system. Will Edwards' tactical kicking and a solid line out helped the Lions continue to pressure the Quins. Another Penalty to Ian Clack took the score to 18 - 5. On the back of more forward pressure and attacking runs from the Clack brothers, B-Dog scored again to take the scores to 25 - 5. Two quick tries to Quins threatened to take the game to the wire, but the cool head of Ian Clack slotted another penalty to put the game out of reach. The Lions were victorious 28 - 17. Votes for the Lions were props Leon and Andrew with a point shared for their work driving pack. Ian Clacks attacking runs earnt him 2 votes but Brendon Elliot was immense around the park and over the ball, not to mention scoring twice, earning him 3 points. 06.01.2022 Tough Road Trip In a physical game against the defending premiers, and currently undefeated, Devonport Bulls Rugby Union Club, the Lions suffered a tough loss yesterday. The Lions travelled with good numbers, but injuries and unavailability led to new combinations. In parts the Lions looked good, but struggled to overcome the consistency of the Bulls. The Bulls punished mistakes and converted opportunities. They showed the young Lions what it takes to win the competition. A ...good lesson. The Bulls won the game 38 - 8. Lions will be working hard to play the Bulls one more time.....hopefully in the big dance! A big thanks to the handful of supporters who made their way to Spreyton for the match. Teddy Edwards, Jack Weedings Dad and Rob and Deb Manson ... thank you! For the Lions, centres Jason Hall and Aaron Talbot were excellent. But Robbie Casboult took best on field for his versatility and commitment. The Lions had a great bus ride back, building on the excellent comradery in the club. 2020 has been disjointed, but we are building a solid base for years to come....now to finish off strong! Next week the Lions take on University at University. We had a great crowd in round 2 for old boys day....it would be great to see the same support just down the road at Uni cheering on the LIONS! See you Saturday
01.01.2022 A wet win! The Lions have climbed to third place on the TRU Premier Division ladder with a tight 10-7 victory over the Stags this weekend. The Lions pack dominated their opposition but in slippery conditions the back line struggled to finish off the attacking raids. The Lions were stung into action when the Stags made a powerful line break and scored a converted try. The team restarted well and through forwards pressure returned the score to evens. Half time 7-7... The second half was a half of missed opportunities for the Lions. The forwards continued to dominate and improved kicking from Will Edwards and Blaine Doust provided the team with multiple attacking line-outs on the Glenorchy line. The Stags defended well and Lions failed to convert opportunities. Eventually Ian Clack stepped up to take penalty points with the Lions nosing ahead 10-7. Thank you to Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club for hosting the game and putting on the BBQ....hopefully we can improve on the weather for the next clash! A big thank you to our supporters and 2019 - 2020 sponsors Prince of Wales Hotel Frank's Cider Energy Solutions GTT Heartwood Malt Whisky Hutchins School Old Boys' Association Next week we face Hobart Harlequins Rugby Union Club at Rugby Park.
