23.01.2022 It’s All in the Detail Bedroom Inspiration for Your Child... www.hibiscusinteriors.com.au

21.01.2022 NURSERY KNOW HOW Those who know me will not be surprised to know that my design inspiration of late has been Nurseries and children’s rooms. As a mother of four... grown children and now young Nana of eight fabulous grandchildren I have enjoyed resourcing some wonderful products and creating new ideas for their personal spaces. Although I love the opportunity when a new occasion arises and my skills are called to action but I also know that it can be a daunting task for many new mums and dads. I decided to share some tips that you may find helpful. Inspiration Required? If you’re looking for inspiration, Pinterest is the perfect place to start. Focus on the broad ideas, like colour, style or theme, but don’t forget to pin those delightfully cute details. Sometimes a single pin such as a simple swatch of wallpaper, a cute art print or a cuddly toy, can inspire an entire nursery design! Consider Your Space Before you climb up that ladder with any old shade of paint, hold off on the paintbrush and take a moment to consider the room itself. Is your baby’s room large or tiny? Does it have a lot of natural light or is it in need of brightening up? When choosing colours, it’s important to take your cues from the existing space. You may love deep, rich colours, but those dark shades can absorb light and easily overwhelm a small room. Light colours, on the other hand, make a room seem larger and brighter. Always consider the room’s needs first to ensure you make the most of your available space. Bold Accents are tops If you love bold colours but your space is limited or your courage is an issue, consider choosing an exciting and daring accent colour. Even in a small room, a well-placed accent wall in a bold colour can add depth, making the space appear larger. You can also introduce a bold statement by adding brightly coloured accessories, such as drapes, cushions or rugs. Future thinking Your child may love pink now, but it won’t be long before that growing person has a big change of heart. If you want to create a look that lasts, consider putting traditional pastels and primaries aside in favour of a more sophisticated colour scheme. Try a fresh favourite like navy and coral or a cool, minty green. Alternatively, you could select a rich neutral shade complimented by one or two easily updatable accent colours. Soothing decor Your nursery colours can affect much more than your decorating plans. According to the Psychology of colour your choices can have a pretty significant effect on your children, influencing their mood, their behaviour, and even their physical wellbeing. Quite a daunting consideration! Obviously, you want to create a relaxing nursery space for your baby and choosing the right nursery colour is a great place to start! Luckily you don’t have to be a professional to use the psychological benefits of colour! Armed with a little colour-know-how and a can of paint, you can easily transform a big, lonely nursery into a soothing sleep sanctuary. I recommend you choose one of these calming nursery colours, and let science do its thing! Subdued blues Muted greens Pale purples Pastel pinks Earthy neutrals Soft whites Glacial greys Style or Theme options If you are having difficulty selecting colours, try selecting a style or theme instead. Decorating styles often come with associated colours, narrowing the field and making it easier to choose the perfect scheme. For example, if you love rustic designs, you might want to focus on warm, rich, shades inspired by nature. Have a thing for shabby chic? Try a pretty pastel. A theme can also inspire a specific colour. How could you consider a pirate theme without an ocean-inspired blue, and what room could be deemed fit for a baby ballerina without a touch of girly pink? Choose your favourite theme, and set your imagination free! Fabric First Need more inspiration? Go shopping! A beautiful bedding or cot set or stylish area rug can serve as the starting place for your entire design! Even if you’ve already decided on your colours, it’s a good idea to hit the shops before buying any paint. Never spend countless hours looking for the perfect accessories in just the right colour having already painted your room. We designers always have perfect looking rooms because we select our fabrics first. Picking the paint colour to match from a Paint Atlas of colours is a piece of cake! Correct Balance To create a well-balanced colour scheme, limit your selection to one primary shade and just one or two accent colours. Be sure to feature each shade several times throughout the room and aim for at least three uses of each colour, this will create perfect flow. Perfect Paint Paint charts can be deceiving, all colours look different once you’ve put them on the wall. Before you order a litre of anything, take home a sample pot, and paint a large patch. Be patient and wait for the colour to dry so you can see how it’s affected by the room’s changing light. When you’re happy with your selected colour choose a durable paint with a semi-gloss finish that can be easily wiped down when sticky fingers are present. Finally, always keep extra paint handy for the occasional (and often unavoidable) touch up. Hope that helps, if you still lack confidence or inspiration I’d love to hear from you. The initial consultation is always free and I can save you costly mistakes! www.hibiscusinteriors.com.au

17.01.2022 In Orbit.... Descendants of the original Sputnik chandelier named after the Soviet satellite that was the first to orbit the Earth, in 1957 are found everywhere, but especially in stark modern rooms that beg for whimsy. That first satellite fanned the midcentury space-themed décor craze, in which the Sputnik’s kitschy combination of straight polished-brass arms and bare bulbs played a starring role.... Now, new starburst-style fixtures are also proliferating and I think they are spectacular! This selection is by Jonathan Adler one of my favourite designers, a few of his amazing Sputnik inspired lights. Available from: www.hibiscusinteriors.com.au

07.01.2022 How to Make Your Bathroom Look More Exclusive: 1. You often see jars filled with cotton balls in the most well-appointed of bathrooms. The traditional look isn’t for everyone, and some of us like our toiletries more concealed. One of the most tried-and-true tricks for giving your space an elevated aesthetic is to contain your odds and ends. Store your soap in a dish rather than on the sink, stash your toothbrush in a beautiful tumbler, or keep your cotton swabs in a box. Tru...Continue reading
