25.01.2022 And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. "And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. "And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed." ~Kitty O'Meara Artist: unknown

20.01.2022 Between the dandelion ladybug and the echinacea spider... can you really choose a favorite? Love this!
20.01.2022 Just as we cleanse the heaviness and stagnation from our bodies in the spring with spring greens and liver-supportive herbs like dandelion, plantain, cleavers, ...and chickweed, the turn of the season calls us to do the same with our physical space. As it turns out, spring cleaning is yet another opportunity to integrate herbs into our lives. Herbs can be used to clear and uplift the energy in our homes while herbal cleaning products are a good choice for our health and the health of our ecosystem. Not to mention that inhaling the scent of herbs while we tidy up is downright pleasureful! Make large batches of the herbal vinegar so you have it at the ready! You can use this herbal vinegar in a number of other cleaning recipes as well including our favorite All Purpose Cleaning Spray! Get the cleaning recipes on the blog > https://theherbalacademy.com/how-to-make-an-all-purpose-he/

17.01.2022 Enlightenment is a Breakdown So you listen to podcasts about Eastern religions, you’ve tried Ayahuasca, you’ve been doing yoga for a while now, you eat high-vi...be foods and you sometimes even meditate. You’re well on your way to enlightenment it seems. Together with all those personal development workshops surely sooner or later you’re going to have that big ‘break through’. My dear sweet friend, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but enlightenment is actually a breakdown. When we are young children the process of socialisation necessitates the creation of a sacred wound; in embracing us when we smile and frowning when we throw a candle at the cat our hapless parents inevitably instil in us the idea that some parts of us are inappropriate, undesirable and unlovable. To navigate the social landscape, we thus build a boat that will sail us to those hallowed shores of ‘That Which We Desire’ which at the start is just our parents’ approval and a chocolate chip cookie. The boat is of course our ego, which rather than being a boat is actually more like a full-body onesie complete with hood and mask. We wrap it around our Selves and play the part in a manner that makes method-actors look like half-arsed sissies. We truly become our character: the pleaser, the good child, the bad child, the rebel, the tough guy, the victim - or any number of other possibilities combined. If we’re well socialised this social persona that we euphemistically think of as our ‘personality’, does indeed get us what we want. We get friends, we get affirmed, we get a gold star at school, we get our first kiss, our first job, our first promotion, our first marriage and our first house. Socialisation works fairly well for most people as far as society is concerned. But that’s the rub you see, the ego was formed in response to, and in order to appease ‘society’ not your soul. In addition to the ‘ego’, Freud thus spoke also about something he referred to as the ‘Id’ which is basically our raw un-edited desires, and the ‘Super-ego’ which is the internalisation of society’s values and morality. The ego’s job is to act as a mediator between these two conflicting psychological poles. The truly baffling thing however, is that the ego is also the boat that we set sail in when we go in search of our Soul. It was my ego that identified itself as a fruitarian and disdained all those ignorant grain-eating carnivores back in 1996. It was my ego that dressed me in white and took me to those ashrams in India later that year. And it was my ego that decided underwear was no longer spiritual. And this is necessarily how it had to be. You see if your parents socialised you fairly well your little ego boat will have sailed you fairly safely through life thus far. Yet sooner or later you are none the less going to find yourself in a break down. Your beautifully crafted persona dingy is going to start to feel cramped and if you're lucky it will quickly start taking on water faster than you can bucket it out. Yet the breaking down of the cramped little ego we have contorted our Self into is what all the spiritual traditions are actually talking about. Before you start getting all starry-eyed however, let me assure you that a breakdown is nothing to brag about. It hurts, it’s scary, it’s profoundly disorienting and tinged with shame. It’s a sweaty, messy, painful breakdown of all we have come to think of as our Self. You're definitely drowning not waving when in the grips of a proper break down. When your beautifully crafted and lovingly handmade life-size Persona-Onsie starts to come apart at the seams don’t be too alarmed if you find very little within it at all. No impressive ideas, no brave dreams, no inspiring visions. In our clearest moments there is just a wide open space like the eternal blue sky. Yet most of the time throughout your breakdown you’re likely to feel like the invisible man who’s finally taken of his suit and glasses and is standing butt-naked in a crowded room yet still feeling very, very exposed. So my sweet friend, if you are yourself going through a breakdown, if you are depressed that everything feels kind of pointless, if you’re anxious about the possibility of impending tragedy and pain, or if you’re just melancholic about the human condition in general DON’T LET ANYONE TALK YOU OUT OF IT! What our culture calls a mental health crisis is so often a very potent soulful opportunity. Those people out there in their Onesies are the lunatics you however are just a heartfelt exhalation away from finding enlightenment in the shadows which is the only place anyone has ever found it. With heart, Jimi
