25.01.2022 What will it look like after lockdown? I've just been speaking with colleagues in Hong Kong and Macau, and over there they had COVID cases earlier than in Europe and Australia, and thought that it might be interesting to pass on some of the things they told me. According to my colleagues, when the government issued social distancing guidelines, these were followed rigorously and in fact exceeded by the population. The reason that people did as asked is because of the previous... experience with SARS which killed a higher proportion of people who contracted it (though wasn't as infectious). As a result, they had a smaller number of infections and a lower level of transmission. There are still some cases of COVID there, but right now, bars and restaurants are open in Hong Kong. Gatherings can be no more than 4 people, and in bars, and restaurants every second table is used. Covering the face is not compulsory, but well over 90% of people are doing so. Most people are not wearing PPE type masks, but using either the cheap $1 paper masks or buff type scarfs. The reason they wear masks is not to protect themselves, but limit transmission in the case that they are unknowingly infected so that they are less likely to spread it. As the UK chief medical officer keeps saying, keeping the transmission level below 1 key. Further measures include putting anyone entering the country is put into a quarantine hotel for 14 days. I'm no medical expert, so whether or not these measures are and will remain effective - only time will tell. I'm hopeful that it does in fact demonstrate there will be a return to something more normal than the lockdown we're currently enduing here in the UK. I would say from my own experience, watching daily news of the COVID disaster unfold in Italy seemed somehow not to be something that would effect me. Even when the first cases appeared in Australia we carried on pretty much as before. Bars and restaurants were full, we went to concerts, the airports were as busy as ever with domestic and international travel. Friends in the UK went to football matches, continued playing sport and going to pubs. I am optimistic that we will now be armed with the same personal experiences of how disruptive and damaging this can be if enough people choose not to follow the guidance, and that when lockdown measures are eased we'll continue to follow whatever guidance that we're given in order that we can get back on with our lives. It might not be a white Christmas in Brisbane, but our fully air conditioned IRATA training centre will keep the training area temperature at a comfortable mid 20s. An early Christmas present from High Q is our new IRATA training videos, demonstrated by the High Q Brisbane instructors for IRATA Level 1, 2 and 3. www.high-q.com.au

20.01.2022 Good evening to you all, and a further rope access related COVID update... We have been fielding a lot of questions from technicians about what will happen to their qualification if they are unable to attend IRATA training. Today we have received the following communication from IRATA today: (Excerpt from email from IRATA Chairman begins below:)... TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION We are mindful of the fact that some of our technicians’ certification will expire through no fault of their own [Unavoidable Expiry] and, due to the situation with COVID-19, it may not be possible for technicians to undertake the required training and assessment. It is important that IRATA certification continues to maintain its integrity and value to industry; and the safety of our technicians is at the forefront of our decision making. It is not possible, as such, to extend IRATA technician certification without first undertaking the required onsite training, followed by the successful passing of a practical assessment. It is also for these reasons that remote training and assessment cannot be considered. Please be assured that our Executive Committee and Senior Management are closely monitoring the changing conditions relating to the outbreak of COVID-19 and endeavouring to find remedies to assist those most in need of our support. Jonathan Capper IRATA International Chairman (Excerpt from email from IRATA Chairman ends) Firstly, please don't shoot the messenger What we believe this means is that if your ticket expires then it will not remain valid for work. What we don't know yet from IRATA is whether there will be any grace given for technicians who expire during this period and want to upgrade. We will pass on further information as soon as we have it.

20.01.2022 To all our valued customers, a cheery hello! Just letting you know we are thinking of you and hope like everyone else that we all manage to get through this in one piece. If you have spare time on your hands, consider updating or upgrading your IRATA quals here at High Q. The government wants the wheels of industry to keep turning wherever possible, so we have elected to stay open. We have a thorough COVID Management Plan in place to keep risks as low as possible. For information about the government's requirements for businesses, see https://www.health.qld.gov.au//non-essential-business,-act. We'll be posting updates regularly as things develop, but for the meantime, stay well (and now's a great time to study your ICOP:)) Cheers, Peter

19.01.2022 The High Q group of companies have approved IRATA training facilities in Australia, the UK and Japan. The COVID pandemic is likely to significantly disrupt our lives for several months, and I wanted to share some of the different experiences we’re facing around the globe, and the different government advice and conditions that we must meet. Japan were one of the earliest countries to be affected, but they were very quick to advise the population to practice social distancing....Continue reading

14.01.2022 Here's the latest advice from IRATA for any Techs who are worried about expiry during the COVID disruptions Dear Karl, Due to the impact the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is having in many countries, we are working with members remotely where possible in the event of an audit and for other requirements that can be satisfied electronically or by telephone. Whilst our focus is duly on supporting our members and technicians, we are also working hard to ensure that our Head Office (HO) ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 For any other rope access technicians preparing to work from home during the lockdown. Thanks to Tibi Kantor for the photo :-)

09.01.2022 Good news for technicians isolated and facing expiry directly as a result of COVID 19 or a government containment measure. IRATA have released details for temporary certification extension. Read the conditions and processes in full through the link provided below. IRATA... Technician Certification - Temporary Extension Dear Peter, We have created an online system to enable our technicians to apply for a temporary extension to their IRATA certification, which expired as a direct result of the COVID-19 outbreak and related government containment measures. All IRATA technicians applying for a temporary extension to their IRATA certification are advised to read all of the application terms and conditions carefully. This will help us process applications more efficiently and without unnecessary delay. Please follow the link to our website, where applications can be submitted: https://irata.org/page/c19ext-page It is important to note that only the IRATA technician named on the certificate can apply for the extension. Therefore, technicians must not ask someone else to apply on their behalf. Yours sincerely, Jonathan Capper IRATA International - Chairman For and on behalf of the Executive Committee
