09.01.2022 Fledgling Magpie Season If you see me on the ground, hold tight, my parents are likely to be somewhere around! They may be out collecting my food or cha...sing away predators that are likely to intrude. Please give them time, and wait and see, they're extremely likely to return to me. As my legs wobble, I clumsily plummet to the ground. I’m just learning my bearings of how to get around. An exciting new world for me to see. Out of the nest and free as can be! Although I may not yet be able to fly, please don’t worry as I’m bound to get by. I can usually flutter and jump to higher ground. I can also communicate with my parents by emitting a sound. If you see me in immediate danger, please help and don’t be a stranger! If I’m injured, I need your assistance. Call your local animal rescue shelter to help secure my existence! Please don’t be tempted to take me home, and try to raise me on your own. I require experienced care, and a nutritious diet like my parents would prepare! I know you mean well, and truly thank you for caring. But when it comes to raising me, even my own parents can find it overbearing! If I’m too young and unable to be returned to my nest, (refer to flowchart) here’s something you can try to ensure I progress... Constructing a makeshift nest is easy as can be. Octopus straps, a hanging basket, leaf litter, then securely hang it up in a tree! Make sure you wait until my mum or dad return. If you see a parent attending to me, then there is no reason for further concern. If you’re EVER in doubt, do not fuss. Ring your local wildlife shelter and they’ll be able to help us!

02.01.2022 CITRUS GALL WASP it’s time to check Citrus trees, particularly lemons and grapefruit, should now be checked for signs of the damaging citrus gall wasp. Look for small cylinder-like raised lumps (galls) on recently produced pencil thin branches. Each gall contains dozens of minute larvae that will emerge as wasps early in spring. Removing the galls by pruning is still an effective and practical method of controlling this pest, providing there are only a few galls pres...ent and their removal does not destroy the tree's main framework branches. Problems with pruning to control the wasp Pruning in winter to remove numerous galls from heavily infested citrus trees is no longer recommended. Pruning trees during autumn and early winter is likely to stimulate soft new branch growth early in spring. This soft growth is favoured by the citrus gall wasp when it lays its eggs during mid spring. Better control strategies Horticultural glue Smearing galls with horticultural glue (Tree Guard) just prior to wasp emergence is a very effective (but messy) method of trapping the overwintering wasps as they emerge from their galls. This should not be applied until early September. New clay spray is safe and effective A new natural, clay-based spray is now available to provide home gardeners with a non-toxic, practical and very effective alternative for controlling citrus gall wasp. The spray is made from very fine kaolin clay. When sprayed over infested trees as the wasps emerge, it effectively deters the wasps from laying eggs. However, timing (mid spring) is critical. 02.01.2022 NOW is a good time to start potting up some herbs: BASIL. Needs plenty of sun through spring and autumn but semi-shade when it’s hot. CHIVES. Grow quickly as the young fresh leaves taste best. Water regularly in hot weather but don’t overwater, particularly in cooler weather. CORIANDER. Grows in semi-shade but very good light. Don’t let potting mix dry out. Harvest the outer leaves regularly regardless of whether they’re needed. LEMONGRASS. Plenty of warmth ...and moisture. Don’t overfeed. Mints. Grow in semi-shade in their own container. Be be mean with the fertiliser. OREGANO. Good drainage essential. Full sun in winter but semi-shade through summer. Don’t overwater. PARSLEY. Grows best in a well lit semi-shaded position. Keep well watered when it’s warm. THYME. Full sun all year round. Also perfect drainage. Keep the potting mix on the dry side except during very hot weather. See more
