24.01.2022 Feature in this week's High Country Herald: Early Years. Play and reading crucial in early years Education is important for children, particularly in the first five years where 90 per cent of their development takes place. The experiences and learning opportunities of a child’s first five years can benefit lifelong learning. Activities such as playing and reading are fantastic ways to aid in children’s development, which they can get at kindergarten. ... Harvard University Centre on the Developing Child report the benefits of play included supporting responsive relationships, strengthening core life skills and reducing sources of stress. Play can come in many different forms and some activities that can be done at home include using chalk to scribble and draw on a path or a fence, make cubbies and forts with blankets, pillows or boxes and explore the outdoors and see what you can find such as interesting feathers, rocks and plants. While play is important for children to acquire social skills, learning literacy through reading is crucial for their future. The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute’s 2013 Let’s Read Literature Review states almost half of Australia’s adult population doesn’t have the minimum standards of literacy to meet the demands of everyday life and work. To help children gain early literacy skills, experts suggest shared reading. Australian Catholic University research fellow Amelia Shay said books offered an opportunity for children to become familiar with new vocabularies. She said reading to very young children could have long-lasting benefits for their later school success, not only in literacy but also in mathematics. See more

20.01.2022 How much rain did you receive? Did you capture any photos of the storms? please share. Last week’s downpour starts storm season The Bureau of Meteorology warns that last week’s storms and rainfall was the kick off for this year’s storm season. BOM meteorologist James Thompson said majority of storms that soaked the region originated at Dalby and moved down to the Toowoomba range.... Because the storms have been moving in a fast pace, most of places affected by them avoided severe rainfall, he said. Majority of the rain from the past seven days though came from Sunday’s storm cell which lasted a little bit over the night. Over the course of the past seven days the towns in the region received the following amount of rain, Chinchilla 9mm, Dalby 26mm, Goombungee 45mm, Crows Nest 50mm, Highfields 61mm and Oakey 66mm. We’re sort of in the middle of the storm season which usually starts in September, but there is a potential for more storms in the future as they are usually more severe at the end of October and through November, Mr Thompson said. BOM predicts chances of showers and potential thunderstorms for Tuesday and Wednesday, with clear weather returning on Thursday. Sean White See more

13.01.2022 Men’s Shed is more than just a shed! With this week being Men’s Shed Week, members of the Crows Nest Men’s Shed shared their insight on what it means to them. The general consensus was that it was being active in the community rather than just work for themselves. Established in early 2018, the Crows Nest Men’s Shed has gradually grown in membership with men from all ages joining the group. The group’s president Peter Long said the shed provides something different for all it...s members whether that is a social gathering or giving them a purpose. Statistics say when men retire and they stop doing things, they fall off the perch pretty early, he said. This group encompasses everything from blokes bringing in skills from past employment, people learning new skills and people dealing with health issues such as depression. We now have a couple of young men with us now and the blokes have taken them under their wings. Men’s shed member Rod Roberts said the group was working on getting more space to enable the men to better socialise. It’s a network of support, Mr Long said. When a member goes through a hard time, the club jumps in to offer a hand. It’s amazing. With this week being Men’s Shed Week, the Crows Nest group will open its doors to the community with its open day tomorrow from 8am to midday. Mr Long said the group was excited to show everyone what they do. Sean White See more
