You may have seen the advertisements and news articles discussing the safety of gas heaters. There have been numerous deaths in recent years from household heaters with the most recent case of 5 children found unconscious in their luxury Sydney home last week. ... What exactly is going on and what can you do to stay safe? As heaters age they begin to deteriorate. This can lead to the toxic fuel gases leaking into the heat stream of your home rather than exiting safely outside. These gases slowly replace the oxygen in the rooms with carbon monoxide, a clear and odourless gas. Unaware of the lethal environment forming around them, people will firstly experience a tired, relaxed state. As the oxygen continues to be starved from their brain, the ability for rational thinking disappears, making it impossible for those affected to realise that they are in danger. Within a few minutes, irreparable brain, nerve and heart damage begins to occur. Feeling exhausted, with no realisation of what is happening, people lie down to rest, drift out of conciseness and unfortunately never wake up. It is an unthinkable situation to imagine happening within a family home but sadly these cases are on the rise and carbon monoxide spillage from heaters is common. Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odourless and is undetectable without specialised equipment. If you are ever feeling tired, nauseous or any dizziness when your heater is in operation you should stop using it and have it tested immediately. Heaters should be checked at least once every 2 years for the presence of carbon monoxide. These tests require to be carried out by licenced gasfitters carrying qualifications in CO testing, gas appliance servicing and with specific CO detection equipment.
