25.01.2022 While it’s safe, we’re jumping off Zoom and will now get together in person at St Albans Community Hall. This is what a typical meeting looks like. Not very scary is it? We all support each other and have fun doing it. Our last meeting’s theme was ‘Back to School’ and Shane stepped in as ‘Toastmaster’ or ‘Headmaster’ as we called him all evening. It was his first time and he was a natural, holding the meeting together and giving effortless transitions between speakers. An M...C in the making! Charles gave an ‘Icebreaker Speech’ and introduced himself to the group and we all learnt something new about one of our most experienced speakers that he had a heavy smoker teacher with bad breath. Eeewww. Then it was Sara’s turn with an ‘Educational’ about ‘choosing a speech topic’. This was invaluable to our newer members and everyone came away with ideas of what they could base their next speech on. Emmie lead the impromptu speaking ‘Table Topics’ with school themed questions and some of us had to dig deep to remember our time at primary school. Our three guests Carl, Melody and Johana were brave enough to take their first step and gave Table Topics a go. Legends! Our next meeting is on Tuesday 1st September at 6.45pm for a kick off at 7pm. Come and join us if you want to find out more about Toastmasters.
23.01.2022 The batons were passed from previous to present committee members over dinner at Tagine Tapas and Grill in Mount Lawley. After meeting online for so long, it was fabulous to get together again in person. To keep us on our toes, new President Pascale led a round of table topics with a dining theme. No prizes for guessing who the rowdy table was!

20.01.2022 For our final get together of 2020, we gathered in one of our favourites Ischia for a fun filled meal and the obligatory Kris Kringle. The great thing about a Toastmaster club meeting in an Italian restaurant? We’re guaranteed not to be the rowdiest bunch in the place. To sharpen our impromptu speaking skills, we weaved a round of Table Topics into our Kris Kringle. Everyone who unwrapped a present spoke to the group for one minute, describing why their present was THE BE...ST. There were some hilarious responses and a few of us should think about getting into product sales! It was a great way to end an unusual year and while we missed Pascal, Graham, Emmie, Yerima and Shane, we look forward to all getting back together in the New Year. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 19th January 2021, 6.45pm for a 7pm start at St Alban’s Church Hall, Highgate. You’re welcome to come along.

16.01.2022 Last week’s meeting had a ‘racing’ theme in honour of the Melbourne Cup. There were fancy hats, excellent speeches and lots of horse references. We also welcomed three guests and Duc received her certificate for second place in our Table Topics Area Competition presented by Charles, our Area Director. If you’d like to visit a meeting, our next get together is on Tuesday 17th November held at St Alban’s Community Hall in Highgate. We’ll be there from 6:45pm for our meeting to... being at 7pm. Come along and find out how you can get over your jitters of speaking in front of a group, how to structure a speech and deliver it well, how to run a meeting and keep it on time, and how to get better at impromptu speaking. Why not bring a friend for some moral support?
16.01.2022 This is what a Zoom Highgate Toastmasters club meeting looks like when it’s ‘Hat’s night!’ There were wigs, feathers, hoodies and flapping unicorn ears. It was FUN! With the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Western Australia, we’ll be heading back to our usual home of St Albans Community Hall soon but not quite yet Our next club meeting will again be via Zoom on Tuesday 16th June at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. This week’s meeting theme is ‘Live in the Moment’, so why not jump in and join us to see how Toastmasters can build your confidence to speak in public while making new friends along the way.
16.01.2022 After a little lock-down blip that caused us to skip a meeting, we were back last week with a Valentine theme. Pascale was our effervescent Toastmaster and asked every speaker to give a short anecdote about Valentine’s Day before they dived into their role. Graham gave an impromptu ‘Inspirational’ and then we had three speeches from Johanna, Dave and Sophie. Johanna talked about ‘Holidays’ and a replica Stonehenge in Esperance, and Dave enlightened us with ‘Some aspects of ...how music works’ sharing insights from David Byrne’s (Talking Heads) book ‘How Music Works’. Our third speaker was Sophie. A brave guest who had been asked to give a speech at her old high school with very little notice. Sophie had been interested in joining Toastmasters and the speech request was enough to get her along to one of our meetings. Sophie practised her speech in front of us, which helped her get over her nerves, and we all provided feedback on little things she could do to make her great speech even better. We’ve since heard that Sophie’s speech was a winner and she’ll see us all at the next meeting. Excellent! Table Topics were the usual hoot. Random Valentine’s questions were asked of random members who gave responses on the fly. Our returning guest Josh was brave enough to give it a go and gave a well delivered, solid answer to the question ‘what qualities do you admire in someone you like’. Then fearless Sophie returned to the stage to answer ‘who is the person you love and why’. Let’s just say she is a dog lover! Our next meeting is on Tuesday 2 March at St Albans Church Hall, Highgate at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. You’re welcome to join one of our meetings if you’d like to learn how to speak more comfortably in front of others. We're a friendly and supportive group of all ages and backgrounds with different levels of speaking experience. But we're all here with a common mission of supporting each other. #Toastmasters, #Toastmastersinternational, #Highgatetoastmasters, #PublicSpeaking, #Presentations, #Communication, #Leadership
15.01.2022 Have you decided on your New Year's Resolution yet? Why not make a promise to yourself to become a better public speaker next year?
15.01.2022 Would you invite an audience to your piano recital if you didn’t know how to play the piano or if you hadn’t rehearsed? You’d be setting yourself up to fail, wouldn’t you? It’s the same with public speaking. You need to know the basic skills of how to speak well in public and then keep practising them until they become fluid and second nature. ... This is what Toastmasters is all about. Learning how to speak in front of a group and then reinforcing your skills by doing it, often. There is also a formal education path to help you develop even further, but at your own pace. A lot of people have speech anxiety but this can be overcome with the right training and experience. If you’d like to see how a Toastmaster meeting works and whether the format can help you with your public speaking, you’re welcome to visit one of Highgate’s meetings. We’re a small, friendly and supportive club from all walks of life. We meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month and our next meeting is on Tuesday 6th April at St Albans Church Hall, Highgate at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Come along and take the first step. There’s no obligation to join. Photo: Ebuen Clemente Jr #Toastmasters, #Toastmastersinternational, #Highgatetoastmasters, #PublicSpeaking, #Presentations, #Communication, #Leadership

Get in touch and come and meet us virtually on Tuesday 19 May at 6.45pm for a 7pm start.
07.01.2022 Our next meeting is on Tuesday 2 Feb if you'd like to join.
05.01.2022 We finally met in person for the first time in a long time, even welcoming two new guests Kim and Caroline. The highlight of the evening was Charles’ speech - an interactive extravaganza on 16 ways to say ‘hello’ without physical contact, throwing back to Toastmaster Sara with the Vulcan salute. Pascale had us all in stitches with his speech Me, me, me it’s all about me! and Ann was a little more serious, discussing the Premier’s PR approach to the pandemic. ... Table topics kept our impromptu speaking skills polished with us all talking about our ‘Next Holiday’. We’re meeting online tonight then back in person again on the 18th August. Come and join us!
05.01.2022 At our last meeting we joined together with clubs in our area on Zoom for a showdown of Humorous Speeches and Table Topics. Duc represented Highgate for Table Topics and came in an almighty SECOND place! Yay to Duc! It was a great night meeting members from other Toastmasters clubs and learning from experienced speakers. Here’s a snap of the competition in action. Toastmaster competitions begin with Club Contests, and winners move through the Area; Division; District; and the...n Region Quarterfinal levels. Region Quarterfinal winners advance to the International Competition, where they’ll compete in the Semi-finals for a chance to take part in the World Championship of Public Speaking. Wow. That's one BIG competition! We’re back to normal next week, meeting in person at St Albans Community Hall on Tuesday 20 October at 6.45pm for a kick off at 7pm. Our meeting theme is appropriately, ‘believe in yourself’. If you’ve always wanted to be a better speaker, come along for a sneak peek of our next meeting and see how it all works. Guest and new members are always welcome.
01.01.2022 We’re meeting in person again on Tuesday. Come and join us at St Alban’s Community Hall at 6.45pm for a kick off at 7pm. Last week we gathered on Zoom with the meeting themed ‘work’. Pascale was a marvellous Toastmaster (as usual) and Yerima gave his second Icebreaker speech ‘Live Full Time, Work Part Time.’ He did a great job and we were all left thinking about our own work life balance. Cheng then motivated us with his speech ‘The 19.5 Principles of Leadership’, sharing his screen to the group and walking us through his teachings. And everyone had a go at impromptu speaking with ‘Table Topics’, delivered by Sarah. Next meeting, Sara will be giving an ‘Educational’ all about choosing a speech topic. Come along for a listen.
