16.01.2022 Around the Wicket By Lyn Brown Round eight of the Barton Shield was played on December 12. With their Hunter Street field under repairs, Blackwater Bilbies hosted Brothers at the Emerald Showgrounds. ... Captain Cameron Keene won the toss for Brothers and elected to bat. Some accurate bowling from Bilbies’ openers Lachlan Munro and Andrew Crook tied the Brothers opening pair down until the first wicket fell at 21. Incoming batsman Keene (55) and opener Liam Farley (55) were able to solidify the innings with a middle order partnership of 105 before Farley was dismissed. Brothers ended their 40 overs with seven wickets down for 189. Best bowling for the Bilbies from Crook (2/37) and Johny Randhawa (2/25). Tight bowling from all the Brothers’ bowlers saw only one Bilbies batsman able to reach double figures. Dylan Page top scored with a valiant 43, but in the end the Brethren were too good for the Bilbies dismissing them in the 26th over for 78 runs. There were two wickets a piece for Lachlan Fenton (2/13), Jamie Iker (2/5), Craig Harms (2/8) and Nick Stallard (2/15). Catches were the order of the day with one to Marcus Heyne, one to Jamie Iker and four to Keene. At Clermont, the Bulls hosted the Rolleston Roosters. A century by young Rooster, Finn Smith (108 from 92 balls) helped Rolleston reach 6/229 after their 40 overs. Clermont was able to reach the total in 29 overs with solid batting from the top order Ryan Nunan (63), Rhys Williams (73), Matt Hicks (28) and Tom Robertson (36 n.o). Going into the Christmas Break, this leaves the Barton Shield poised at Brothers on the top of the ladder with 33 points and Clermont Bulls second with 27. Senior games resume on January 9, where all eyes will be on the top of the table clash between Brothers and Clermont to be held at Clermont Sportsground. See more
