12.01.2022 The sound of the week is 'Qu'. Vocabulary enrichment/phonemic awareness: The children engaged in our ‘letter-sound of the week’ word production with enthusiasm and interest. Even though it can be tricky to think of words that begin with the letter ‘Q’, or the /qu/ sound, they were able to brainstorm 15 words. The children also learnt about the ‘qu’ blend and successfully engaged with this more complex concept. Each day the children grow as skilled literacy users as they enga...ge with play-based, explicit, environmental, and incidental literacy learning experiences. Modelled Writing: Today I supported the children’s writing learning and development by engaging in ‘modelled writing’, as I created our ‘QU’ word list. I talked about the purpose of the text and we talked about different ways we could make lists other than using written text. The children suggested typing a list on the computer and printing the list, making a note on the iPad, drawing pictures instead of writing words, and even using a voice recording of each person’s word. The children observed me engaging in key writing behaviours as I wrote each word and I used ‘’think-alouds’’ to narrate the strategies I was using (e.g. letter formation, writing left to right). Tomorrow, I will invite the children to help me write another list (like we did last week) so that they can practice their writing behaviours and try out the different communication/documentation strategies that they suggested.
