23.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: SEPARATION ANXIETY AND COVID19! As we are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel with COVID19 (we are not out of the woods yet!), we are (or are discussing) returning to work away from home. This can prove quite difficult for our furry friends as many have become accustom to their humans spending most of their time in their company. As some pets are already predisposed to separation anxiety, there will be increased cases and issues in the upco...ming months as this is a situation most of us have not experienced previously. What is Separation Anxiety? Separation Anxiety is distress of a pet as a result of being isolated from those they share a bond with. This can be evident in many ways such as vocalisation, pacing, panting, excess drooling, destruction, inappropriate toileting, vomiting and diarrhoea to name a few. This may be even more of an issue with a newly adopted pet! So what can pet owners do to help? If you have not started doing so already, you must start the desensitisation process NOW. Here are some ways to help with separation anxiety: - As we have mentioned before, start this process NOW! The longer you have to aid in this situation, the better it will be for you little friends. - Build this tolerance slowly. Start with leaving the room or putting them outside by themselves for short periods of time (5-10mins) and increase the time gradually. - Give them plenty of enrichment when they are on their own. Puzzle toys, Kongs filled with peanut butter, scattered kibbles in the garden or area of stay to keep them active are great ways to provide healthy stimulation. NOTE: Always test toys prior to leaving them with your pet to prevent complications with ingestion. - Make entrances and exits NON EVENTFUL! The more you hype of coming home or leaving, the more that anxiety will fabricate. - If actions such as picking up your keys/ putting on your shoes/ picking up your bag trigger anxiety, do these things more often when you are NOT leaving the house to reduce association. - When you DO start work, take them for a nice walk before work to keep them happy and (hopefully) tired. For some pets, additional behaviour training or medication may be needed to cope with separation anxiety. If you require any assistance with your pet with this issue, please call us at High Wycombe Vet Hospital on 9454 6915. Please SHARE this with your fellow pet owners to help reduce the separation anxiety in pets!

19.01.2022 Hospital Case: Maggie's Bountiful Bee Stings! Maggie the Pug has come to us and WAVES Vet 4 times within 3 months for bee stings. She just can't stay away from them! Her most recent episode resulted in anaphylactic shock. Maggie stayed at WAVES for treatment and monitoring for the evening and went home to mum the next day. As future stings could be life threatening, her mum has decided to begin desensitisation at WAVES with venom injections at High Wycombe Vet each month in b...etween progress check ups with WAVES. Here is Maggie posing with her vial of treatment safely packed in her take away cooler bag from WAVES. If your pet has been stung/bitten by an insect, give us a call on 9454 6915 for advice. Signs of anaphylactic shock include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, collapse, pale gums and difficulty breathing. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms following an insect sting/bite, please come straight down to the hospital. If it is out of our opening times, please go straight to an emergency vet hospital.

18.01.2022 HAPPY FRIDAY! If your pet could eat one thing without consequence, what would it be?HAPPY FRIDAY! If your pet could eat one thing without consequence, what would it be?

17.01.2022 Derek has a very responsible mother. He has a dental check up and routine scale and polish every year to prevent major dental issues in the future. Here he is, with his best "Ive just woken up from anaesthetic" face.

17.01.2022 Have you ever seen a howling Rottweiler? Big boy Kingston came in and stayed in hospital with us to treat his ears. He was missing Mum and Dad but, when the vets and nurses when to talk to him during the day, he seemed much more comfortable. Nurse Maybelline snuck up on him having a howl (and caught him rearranging his cage a little).

16.01.2022 Happy Friday! Ever thought of what a certain animal would look like without their fur coat on? Have a look at these creatures. Some are odd, some are cute, some just look wild! https://www.discoverlifestyle.com//animals-cant-recogniz/

16.01.2022 HOSPITAL CASE: Peppers Pesky Pinna Problems! This beautiful little pupper is Pepper and she has had chronic ear issues ever since she had been in the rescue facility. She has been in and out of other vets for years due to her recurrent ear infections, which were often very painful, as well as very itchy and inflamed, Peppers mum just wanted her to be comfortable. ... Pepper had had many ear cleans, had been on various medications and often needed to have a cone on her head constantly to stop her from self traumatising her ears. A Lateral Resection surgery (a surgical procedure that involves removing the outside cartilage wall of the ear to shorten the ear canal which makes it easier to clean and control infection) was performed on BOTH ears in 2011 at another vet to help alleviate her frequent, yeasty, infected ears. Although this helped the situation, it didnt eliminate the problem completely. So over the years, Pepper continued to have her ears treated medically without real success. When Pepper came to see us, the issues with her pinnas (the flappy part of the ears) were so severe and horrifically damaged that she needed to be anaesthetised to even appropriately examine and clean her ears once more. Peppers mum asked if the removal of the pinnas would be an option. With the problem essentially involving the pinnas itself, the vets concluded that this was definitely an option. (She would still be able to hear as her ear canals would be retained). Peppers mum understood that cosmetically, it may be a little confronting for Pepper to have no ears, but as long as it improved her little girls quality of life, the decision was easily made. So after much discussion, Pepper underwent surgery with Dr Neville to remove her ear flaps and take the chronic damaged ear flap tissue away. Were happy to report that her surgery went extremely well and her recovery was smooth (just like her new head look!!) Both our vets and her mum are very pleased with Peppers surgical result and it has greatly improved the quality of her life. She now looks like a little seal pup and has a new lease on life without constant painful, itchy ears!

15.01.2022 Keisha is demonstrating how to be a "lady" when you are in hospital. She lays calmly, with her legs crossed, watching the day go by...

14.01.2022 Charlie had surgery and needed to wear an elizabethan collar to prevent self trauma to the wound. His parents were teaching him the lesson of "When life gives you lemons..." Definitely one of the most creative Ecollars we have seen from our clients :D

14.01.2022 Sally the little Dachshund pup has been visiting us many times in the last few months... She has come in to see us for her routine puppy vaccines, troubles with spicy flies (bees!), a bout of gastrointestinal upset, an allergic reaction, a tail injury AND sterilisation! Shes been a great patient and was well looked after by our vet and nursing team. Her mum sent us a cute snuggly photo when they got home form one of her earlier visits as she was exhausted and went straight to bed...

14.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: Did you know there is a specialist vet in Perth for just about anything? 13.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: Spicy Flies (Bees!) Many dogs (and some cats) will chase these delicious sky jalapenos for fun/curiosity...... Sometimes, there are zero repercussions. Other times, there may be swelling, redness, vomiting and diarrhea. Rarely (it CAN happen), dogs can go into anaphylactic shock, become pale in the gums, have weakness or collapse. 12.01.2022 Lost and Found Pets! A (very) short story about Crunchie the cat: Lovely Olivia and her mother came in one day to notify us about a cat that has been hanging around their front yard. They asked if he could be scanned for a microchip so we could reunite him with his owner. Our nurse scanned the kitty and ...*BEEP*. We were onto the phone to contact his parents immediately. Crunchies dad did not answer so we left a message telling him that his kitty is safe and with us. ... Just as the nurse when out to tell Olivia and her mum, a nice gentleman came in to as if anyone has seen his sweet, ginger tabby kitty... Crunchie! It was all smiles and laughs when Crunchie was back in his dads arms having a cuddle! We even had a lady come in, just as everyone was celebrating, asking if the handsome cat she saw on Facebook had gone home If you happen to find a kitty, give us a call and speak to one of our friendly nurses. Sometimes, it may be a case of leaving the kitty alone for a while (if NOT injured) and seeing if it will head home. REMEMBER not to feed the kitty as most will enjoy "subsequent owners" when they have been fed. Other times we may ask you to try and bring kitty in to see us so we can see if there is a microchip and we can contact its owners right away. If the kitty is not easy to catch Cat Haven and the local Rangers can be called for assistance.

06.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: Dog fights happen more and more now a days. Dont ask us why, but we have noticed a rise in the last few years. Heres some Dog Etiquette that every owner should know:... Some dogs may be friendly and very sociable, others, although maybe just as friendly (or not at all, but still enjoy an isolated on leash walk), may also have many factors that will contribute to an unwanted encounter. This can be stressful for owners AND dogs. PLEASE always ask if your dog can say "Hello" to another dog BEFORE approaching and if you are on a LEAD ONLY area, unless you have good recall, DO NOT let your dog run up to another dog. Have a squiz at this info pic for more information.

01.01.2022 Hospital Case: Jet the Three Legged Wonderdog! **See comments for his recovery video! Jet came to us for lameness of his front leg and after work up and testing, was diagnosed with a malignant cancer. His parents decided to go for an Oncology consult at Perth Veterinary Specialists to see what their options would be.... PVS deemed him a good candidate for amputation of the forelimb and chemotherapy. Although this was the best option for Jet, as it would buy him time, provide comfort and improve his quality of life, his parents knew this would not "fix" his problem. They decided to do the best they could for their fur baby and had the amputation performed by Dr Neville and Dr Kathryn at Forrestfield Vet Hospital and have chemotherapy at PVS after. Many owners worry about how their pets will cope after amputation but Jet showed us all how resilient animals can be and how fast they can adapt. The next morning, he was enjoying a little walk outside on the grass, happy and trotting around on three legs. As soon as his stitches were removed 13 days later, Jet was at the park playing with his friends like nothing ever happened! (See video in comments). Sadly, Jet has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge but, he left with all the love a fur parent could give! His parents miss him dearly and our vets and nurses will as well as we have known Jet as a pup and will remember him always. But Jet’s wonderful owners don’t regret their decisions at all, and were happy to still share his story in the hope that it will help other clients with similar decisions, as to what path they could take. If you have any questions regarding your pet, or specialist referrals for your pet, please call us on 9454 6915.

01.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS Lost and Found Pets: Many people find dogs and cats and want to find their owners. Its easy when pets are easily caught and have ID tags. ... 01.01.2022 HOSPITAL CASE: Lexi's Fungal Frustrations! Lexi the Border Collie X is shown here with a catheter that has been surgically inserted by a specialist veterinarian at PVS. This catheter has been placed through her skull and into her frontal sinus where the infection was present. This allows the medication to flow directly into the area where it was needed. The first infusions were carried out at PVS, then at High Wycombe Vet and Forrestfield Vet Hospital with specific medical i...nstructions from the specialist veterinarian. Lexi had eye drops (to prevent irritation) prior to each dose of medication. Her medication was syringed via her catheter twice daily for 2 weeks. Lexi and her parents handled this ordeal incredibly! Mum and Dad did not miss a beat dropping her off for her infusions each morning and evening as required. Lexi was a complete superdog when it came to her treatment! She was calm, patient and was very well behaved even though she was uncomfortable (and had a sneezing fit most days after her treatment). She always came in with a smile on her face and a wag in her tail! She is all clear now and is enjoying life **See comments to view Lexi being a great patient!
