22.01.2022 NEAT or Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis has been found to contribute to one of the largest portions of our variable energy expenditure. When dieting you may find that over time your body will start adapting to the energy deficit you have placed it in and sometimes it could be due to the subconscious lowering of your NEAT.. Other words, your body makes you lazier. Now there are plenty of ways that we can affect our NEAT and here are our 6 favourite ways to... create some autonomy with your activity levels. 1) Aim to achieve 10,000 steps per day. If you are an office worker, getting your steps up could be very difficult. Scheduling in times for a walk or light jog is a great way to increase your NEAT and therefore assist with your weight loss and management. 2) To add to the steps per day, instead of the elevator or escalator, try to take the stairs. Those small autonomous movements/choices add up over time. 3) Are you driving around for 15mins to get the park closest to the shop you are wanting to go to? Not only could you of parked further away and gotten to your destination earlier but you could also contribute to the overall energy output for your day. 4) Instead of Netflix Sundays make some outdoor social events where you might go to a park, climb a mountain, go for a bike ride etc. We live in a wonderful country with some spectacular places to explore. Go and soak in the area you live in. 5) Park down the road and walk or ride the rest of the way. Saving the earth a bit on carbon emissions plus increase your daily activity. 6) Don't' sit at your desk at lunch or your break. Get up and move around. Go get some sunlight. Trust me, that email or job can wait. clear your mind and come back refreshed and ready to go. All in all, the answer to increasing your NEAT is simple... STOP BEING LAZY! 13.01.2022 Its quite common for people to be fixated on the scales and let the scales determine whether you have done well or not on your fat loss journey. What we need to understand is that fat loss and weight loss are two different things. Weight loss has many various factors. Bowel movement: simply doing a poo before weighing yourself can affect your scale weight. Muscle: people that are new to training can put on quite a substantial amount of... muscle in the early stages of there journey, even in a deficit. Sodium: just consuming more sodium(aka salt) can make you hold/lose more water weight Stress: it has been shown that stress can make you retain water weight quite significantly Training: when you train your body holds water to help with recovery Carbs: every gram of carbs holds 3-5g of water in the form of glycogen, so its easy to see why you lose a lot of water weight doing keto Menstrual cycle: ladies when its the time of the month you water weight can fluctuate quite heavily. 04.01.2022 We are coming into the silly season and people are losing their minds over gaining weight and losing their "summer bods" WELL!! There is hope! If you haven't heard of it before, intermittent energy restriction aka "Diet Breaks" have become a fairly popular nutritional protocol to assist in not only reduction in metabolic adaptations but also some possible psychological factors to extended energy deficits. ... These reductions can play a huge roll not just in maintaining our resting energy expenditure (don't need to grind harder all the time) but also our ability to stay adherent to our program. The way it can do this is by allowing us to have short periods of energy restriction to then another short period at maintenance calories (higher calories but not high enough to gain weight). This can allow us to factor in more common social events e.g. dinners, BBQs, parties, Christmas etc, as we will allow ourselves higher caloric amounts during our break week. The way we would look to apply the diet break, is to follow 14-21 days energy restriction followed by 7-14 day energy maintenance. Applying this to our Christmas period might not only increase our rate of loss when we come into our deficit again but also mitigate any guilty feelings for eating more food over this period.
