24.01.2022 Now to cheer us all up: THE STORY OF "ED" - THE HORSE WHO COULDN'T TALK! Since I stopped doing heroic things like colic surgery etc twenty years ago, it is not ...often in my job that I get to say that I have saved a horse's life in a matter of minutes. Maybe getting a live foal out of a mare in trouble is the most common scenario and that doesn't happen all that often nowadays. But......... Monday after dinner I went to see "Ed", a pet pony belonging to the lovely McInnes family of Mt Hunter. Mel had taken the phone call and it didn't sound like a desperate emergency so I really didn't rush but scoffed down dinner quickly and took off. Imagine my surprise when I got there and immediately realised that he could not breathe and was literally dying before our eyes. I told Jim and Lauren that I had to do a tracheotomy (cut a hole in his trachea/windpipe and insert a tube for him to breathe through) or he was going to die very soon. They had that bewildered "deer in the headlights" look on their faces but agreed. A quick sedation, prep, local anaesthetic and a few minutes later I had the tube in. Lauren squatting holding a torch and Jim holding his head straight and still. We got it done just as Lauren was about to pass out so I got her sitting down and went back to my other patient. You cannot imagine how rewarding it was to see Ed take those first few grateful big breaths. It must to a terrible feeling to be dying of suffocation and it surely must be the most amazing feeling to suddenly breathe again! So now what was causing the obstruction to his airway? Clearly he had a blockage at his larynx ("voicebox") but with such an acute onset it was hard to imagine what it would be. I have a scope in the truck but I thought he would need hospital care anyway so we loaded him up and choofed him off to Agnes Banks Equine. I followed the float to The Oaks and I could see his little ears pricked above the top of the back door so I was pretty sure he would make it there ok. The vet on duty at the hospital, Alexis Clark, scoped him and found - wait for it - you will never guess - a mango seed perfectly and firmly lodged in his larynx!!!!!!! Miraculously she was able to grip it with some sharp forceps and pull it back out his nose. I cannot believe it would fit. Fantastic job Alexis and staff. I caught up with Lauren yesterday and she told me that driving back from the hospital late that night she and Jim had that "what just happened feeling". I am sure they did. Ed (Melinda has unkindly nick-named him "Mango" - I told her not to call him that to his face - too soon!) will stay in hospital a few days but should make a full recovery. Stick to grass, pellets and hay mate. I have attached one photo and will add some more when I get video etc from the hospital

22.01.2022 HOMES NEEDED - CAN YOU HELP? There are currently calves (mostly Fresian Jersey) being born each day in Kaikoura and if they do not find homes around 200 will be... off to slaughter. Currently looking to rehome to avoid this. If anyone can adopt calves, please email: [email protected] These calves will require shelter and hand raising with bottle feeding. They will also need NAIT registering, vaccinations, drenching, protein pellets, good quality feed and enough grass as they grow older. Please only offer homes for calves if you can look after them properly. There will be consent forms to read and sign which outline the requirements of cattle. Please share this post

18.01.2022 ... ...Comes down to ? You could teach a horse to learn the one thing you...’re trying to teach him, but this will take time. And you then have to teach it to the next horse, and the next, and the next. And what if tomorrow you have to teach him something new? You start over. So many classical training methods are based on this principle: get them to understand you. . I know we can push ourselves a little bit and learn the language of the horse and have the tools to address ANY problem at ANY time with ANY horse. We can understand THEM. I know because my family has been using and teaching these methods for five generations - and it works EVERY time. Any horse, any problem - and we can fix it. Now, I’m bringing this method - no, this language - to you. You can learn how to speak the language of the horse in my Team MG Members’ Club. And you can have doing it. Think I’m crazy? Here are some testimonials from other students who have gone through our program: I have learned so much from all of these amazing videos! I loved learning how to deal with my mares backing up problems. I love how Michael makes training our horses so much fun! - Debbie M I have truly enjoyed each and every day and have been learning a lot and taking it down to the barn and applying it to my horses. It helps to keep you motivated when you have someone who checks in on you. It’s so greatly appreciated! - Roxanne S I am so hooked!!! Please, please, please keep ‘em coming! This has been the motivation I need to get out there and try. My horse and I are both learning so much. Without your help and instruction, I wouldn’t know where to begin. - Candace P. Join the Team MG membership club and get: Access to hundreds of short, fun, and simple training videos that will help you solve ANY problem FREE 30 Day Horse Help Challenge - the SAME method we bring our horses through Weekly tasks, zoom calls, and live viewings of me training my own horses Access to a growing community of Team MG members to learn from 1:1 support, encouragement, and accountability from me and my team Join here >> https://membership.horseguru.com/join-now

18.01.2022 And again at Darley

17.01.2022 Alright folks, this is going to be a very difficult story to tell, but I feel compelled to share this information. This past week has been an extremely difficul...t journey for us. Our sweet baby Lily got into one of my houseplants and ended up fighting for her life at the emergency vet for nearly a week. She is now home with a feeding tube and a medication schedule that spans from 7 AM until 12 AM daily. There have been many tears shed, dollars spent, and guilt felt... all because of a $5 plant. I’d like to spread the word about this houseplant because I had no idea when I purchased it from a big box garden center last summer that this little 6-inch plant would become my nightmare. The Sago Palm is a common house plant and landscaping plant native to tropical regions. All parts of the plants are extremely toxic to humans and animals causing liver failure and death from even minimal exposure. All parts includes the trunk, roots, leaves, and small berry-like seeds that can develop on mature plants. I have seen this plant for sale on the shelves at Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot sitting among other harmless household plants with zero warning label attached. ***Update: On Saturday, May 16, Lily passed away in our arms. She fought hard, loved hard, and gave us a couple butt wiggles just before she just couldn’t fight any longer. We loved her so very much and gave her all the love and care in the weeks since the incident we could possibly give. We are truly devastated. If you are a houseplant lover, please research your house plants prior to purchasing. Even if you think the house plant is in a secure location, mischievous little paws may still get into trouble. Feel free to share this story. You may just save a life. https://www.aspca.org//animal-p/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

12.01.2022 Just for fun......

09.01.2022 A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to st...ruggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. This is her story of giving gratitude. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you be so fortunate To be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

04.01.2022 Beware! To all dog owners: It was on Fox news earlier that 70 dogs have died as a result of eating chicken jerky treats made from chicken that has come from China. Kingdom Pets brand from Costco is one of them. Also certain Blue Buffalo brand pet foods have a recall for the same thing. Please re post and make sure all your doggie friends are aware of this.Beware! 01.01.2022 The latest patient. Saw this little baby Maggie on the side of the road after being hit by a car. He’s doing OK and hopefully his wing will repair.

01.01.2022 This is a tick that was fully engorged on a dog and fell off. It was put in a ziplock bag and we waited to see what happened to show you all. It’s been in the b...ag for 2 weeks with no air flow and started to lay eggs about 5 days ago, continuing to do so even still today. Imagine not knowing this was on your animal and it fell off in your house. You’d have 1000’s of baby ticks. GROSS! Please make sure your animals are currently being treated with flea and tick prevention. We know how prevalent they are in our area. See more
