22.01.2022 THE GUT-SKIN AXIS The cells of the gut, brain and skin are linked by common embryonic origin, with shared signalling and innervations. Many skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema, have increased inflammatory or immune activity, with links to dysbiosis and increased gut pathogen overgrowth.... Some experts indicate that intestinal dysbiosis (disruption of the normal bacterial flora of the gut with a disproportionately high concentration of unfriendly bacteria) can promote atopic eczema. Supplementation with probiotics has been shown to improve this condition in some cases. In addition, gut dysfunction and stress-induced changes of the gut microbiota has been linked to increased intestinal permeability (or leaky gut), which could lead to systemic and local skin inflammation. Major other factors that can contribute to eczema include: Family history of allergies Personal history of allergies Digestive disorders (e.g. low stomach acid) Dysbiosis and/or liver toxicity Exposure to environmental allergens and/or toxic compounds Nutritional deficiencies Excessive consumption of fruit especially citrus fruits Stress, anxiety or underlying emotional imbalance Book in for a FREE HEALTH CHECK with one of our experienced Naturopaths to discuss your skin condition and how we can help to identify and address your underlying cause. 20.01.2022 Let's talk about Anger. According to Paul Ekmans research, anger is one of the six basic emotions along with disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise. Anger is felt by everyone at some point and is a completely normal emotion of its own.... However, sometimes other emotions are fuelling the anger and we use anger to protect the raw feelings that lie beneath it. If you're having trouble coping with or managing the anger or would like to explore underlying emotions, I would be happy to have a chat. Jo-Anne Barrett - Clinical Hypnotherapist

17.01.2022 Wakame - Seaweed packed full of nutrients No, not the kind that wrap your sushi with. (That is called Nori.) No, not the kind that is in seaweed salad. (I have no idea what that is, to be honest.) Yes, the black bits that float in miso soup or Chinese/Korean soup. It is called Wakame, and it has been enjoyed in Eastern Asian counties for many centuries. It has all the goodness for your health with very little calories; Fiber (Alginic acid) ; promotes regular bowel movement,... lower Cholesterol level and blood pressure Iodine ; essential for thyroid function Minerals : calcium and magnesium Vitamin : A, K, B1 and B2 Low in calorie (Only 17kcal in 100g) It usually comes in dried form and you can usually get it at an Asian supermarket. My favourite is Wakame no Sunomono (salad). ->https://www.thespruceeats.com/cucumber-and-wakame-salad-rec Why dont you add some Wakame to your diet by sprinkling it into your Asian soup or try out a new side dish salad next time? 16.01.2022 What is Frozen Shoulder? Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a condition which starts as in pain into the shoulder and progresses gradually into the restriction in almost all ranges of movement. For some, the pain worsens at night, which can disrupt sleep. It most commonly affects women 40-60 years of age but men can also be affected. The causes of frozen shoulder are unknown but it is usually more prevalent in people who have had prior shoulder related injuries or trau...ma which have caused the affected shoulder to be immobilised for a period of time. Immobility may be the result of many factors, including: Rotator cuff injury Broken arm Stroke Recovery from surgery There is also an increased risk in those who have systemic conditions which may include but are not limited to: Diabetes Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) Cardiovascular disease How long does Frozen Shoulder last? There are three distinct stages of Frozen Shoulder. Stage 1 (freezing) occurs when there is increasing pain into the shoulder and a gradual reduction in movement. Stage 2 (frozen) is when there is minimal shoulder movement and the level of pain gradually decreases. Stage 3 (thawing) is when normal motion is generally restored. Each phase can last between 3-12 months. It's highly unlikely that frozen shoulder will reoccur in the same shoulder, but it is not unusual for it to occur in the opposite shoulder. Are there any treatment options available? It is often common in the freezing stage to have a cortisone injection into the shoulder for those who find the pain unbearable or when pain is affecting sleep. Manual therapy can be started during any stage of the condition. The Niel Asher technique was developed in the United Kingdom by osteopath Simeon Niel-Asher who has had successful outcomes with patients suffering with Frozen Shoulder. The technique uses a combination of manual therapies to achieve a positive outcome. It can often reduce the length of the individual phases depending on how soon treatment is commenced. The treatment protocol combines soft tissue therapy, trigger point therapy and mobilisations of the shoulder. Who can I see to help with Frozen Shoulder or other shoulder issues? Our chiropractor Amanda has studied the Niel Asher Technique and has used it at several practices she has worked at with positive results. Additionally our massage therapist Tyson often co-manages Frozen Shoulder cases. Please contact us directly if you need more information or would like to make an appointment (08) 9298 8332

16.01.2022 LET THE SUNSHINE IN... The best-known benefit of sunlight is its ability to boost the bodys VITAMIN D levels... SAFE SUN EXPOSURE IS PARAMOUNT!!

15.01.2022 Suffering from headaches? Many of the patients we see suffer from "tension-type headaches", which can be described as a mild to moderate pain that is often felt like a tight band or pressure feeling around your head. These symptoms may be dull, constant or throbbing and may present with a tension sensation behind the eyes and feeling of strain in the neck and facial muscles. We are still unsure of the direct causes of these headaches, however some factors that may contribu...te to this condition are: Poor sleep Stress Dehydration or missing meals Poor posture Jaw clenching & teeth grinding Chiropractic care has the potential to reduce your headache symptoms and provide relief by releasing areas that may be contributing to tension around your neck and head. We can also help in other areas such as correcting your posture, providing you with beneficial stretches and exercises and advice on correct sleeping positions To book an appointment with one of our Chiropractors today, contact Hills Natural Health Centre on (08) 92988332 or book online at www.hillsnaturalhealth.com.au

13.01.2022 Are you suffering from a disc bulge or slipped disc? Youre not alone! Approximately 5-20 people out of 1000 suffer from a disc bulge every year! This occurs when the soft centre of a spinal disc (located in between each spinal vertebrae) pushes through the outer ring of the disc. If this herniated disc presses onto the spinal cord or spinal nerves, it can cause pain and other nerve related symptoms. The longer the condition progresses, the worse the symptoms can become... Common symptoms are: Neck &/or back pain Burning, numbness, tingling in the neck, arms, hands, back, buttocks, legs or feet Muscle spasm or cramping Sciatica, arm or leg weakness Increased pain with sneezing, coughing or bending forward Its most common in adults 30-50 years of age and can be caused wear & tear, poor lifting techniques, obesity, repetitive activities, poor posture and trauma. If youre suffering from the symptoms above, our Chiropractors can help by using low force techniques to improve spinal function, massage to release those tight muscles & will prescribe specific stretches and strengthening exercises! Book in with one of our Chiropractors today

11.01.2022 Is it normal to experience pain & tenderness following a Chiropractic adjustment? Yes! It is completely normal to feel some soreness, discomfort and even an increase in initial symptoms following a Chiropractic adjustment. This can begin within the first few hours post treatment and can last up to 24 hours. Not every patient experiences this, or to the same extent due to the fact that everyones body responds differently to Chiropractic care depending on their injury an...d symptoms! Your body has the amazing ability to heal itself but this process doesnt always happen in one direction. In some instances depending on your condition & injury, you may feel like youre taking one step forward and two steps back in your recovery process. This is completely normal and is only an indication that your body is starting to heal! The goal of an adjustment is to restore movement to the joints in your spine. When this movement is restored it allows the body to begin the process of healing. As we add mobility to joints that have been stuck there may be some anticipated soreness. You could relate this to pulling a splinter out - usually there is still pain afterward but its a healing soreness. There are several things that are encouraged following an adjustment to reduce pain levels and to help initiate the healing process! Keep hydrated Get a good nights sleep Keep moving & prescribed exercises Stretching Cold & heat packs Take time for relax & rest - dont push yourself if youre not feeling well. Always make sure to notify your Chiropractor if youre experiencing any discomfort & pain after an adjustment - and remember that regular treatments may decrease the soreness and your initial symptoms completely!

11.01.2022 More than 70% of your immune system lies in your gastrointestinal tract with trillions of gut microbes involved in regulating immune responses on a day-to-day basis. Altered gut health can have a huge influence on how we react to allergens and if your struggle with allergies is pushing you to your limit, it's time to find the root cause and have a close look at your gut health and function. Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to something that is normally harm...Continue reading

08.01.2022 WHAT IS THE BODY WEIGHT SET-POINT? Your body weight is under unconscious homeostatic control. Just like your blood pressure, core temperature and pH, your body operates to maintain a narrow bandwidth of body weight. This relatively stable weight is known as the body weight SET-POINT.... Similarly, just as a deviation from your core temperature set-point will elicit a corrective response, the body will execute physiological and behavioural responses to recalibrate your body weight if it goes above or below the set-point. So... IF YOU ARE OVERWEIGHT, WHY DOESN'T YOUR BODY FIGHT BACK AND REDUCE THE WEIGHT? Unfortunately, the set-point of overweight and obese individuals has drifted undesirably HIGHER. And...if you lose weight, your body is always trying to get back to that higher set-point. It does this by signalling your body to reduce METABOLISM and increase APPETITE. HOW DO YOU LOWER THE SET-POINT? * Limit HYPERPALATABLE foods as this blocks the reward centre and overrides the set-point. * Eat adequate HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN to increase satiety and thermogenesis. * Incorporate DIET BREAKS to avoid plateaus and to decrease the set-point. * Get adequate SLEEP (see my previous post on how sleep affects weight). * Incorporate the right type and volume of EXERCISE that lowers the set-point. If you would like assistance with lowering your set-point, book an appointment with our Naturopath Lori Fryer, who specialises in natural & healthy long-term weight loss strategies. https://hillsnaturalhealth.com.au/

06.01.2022 Let's join in with congratulating our Chiropractor, Dr Ryan, who celebrates his daughter's 5th birthday! What a milestone it has been and it looks like she's growing up big and tall just like her daddy! #hillsnaturalhealth #happybirthday #congratulations

05.01.2022 NATUROPATHIC PERSPECTIVE ON WEIGHT LOSS Are you sick of hearing about the next best way to lose weight? Have you tried it all and still can't seem to shift that extra weight? This series of posts will definitely not be about the next fad diet!!... Instead, I would like to shed a bit of light on some of the possible underlying reasons why you may be carrying extra weight or why you are unable to lose weight and keep it off. Firstly, let's talk about SLEEP....here are a few researched truths.... 1. Inadequate sleep is associated with an increase in weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. 2. Sleep is MORE important than exercise for weight loss. 3. Poor sleep disrupts weight regulation by increasing APPETITE signalling hormones and decreasing satiety hormones. So...the result of inadequate quality or quantity of sleep is: * an increase in appetite * a decrease in willpower * a preference for high calorie foods * a decrease in metabolic rate * a decreased desire to exercise. However, restoring or extending sleep improves energy homeostasis and aids WEIGHT LOSS. Adults need 7-8 hours to support healthy BMI and to regulate appetite signalling. Children and adolescents need more. If you are having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, a Naturopath can help with strategies to restore the sleep-wake cycle. So book an appointment with one of our qualified Naturopaths (Lori or Naomi) to get to the bottom of your sleep issues. https://hillsnaturalhealth.com.au/

04.01.2022 SRING (& POLLEN) ARE IN THE AIR... Do you suffer from HAYFEVER this time of year? Would you like to know how to build your immune TOLERANCE & RESILIENCE to improve your symptoms? READ ON...... WHAT IS ALLERGY? Allergy is essentially a state of immune hyper-reactivity. The body encounters an allergen (a foreign substance such as dust, animal fur, pollen, certain foods) that triggers a reaction... In an attempt to restore balance, the immune system mounts an attack to eradicate the allergen. This typically involves mast cells releasing HISTAMINE and other immune factors, causing an explosion of inflammation the end result being uncomfortable ALLERGIC SYMPTOMS... While meant to be short-lived, the immune response can continue and become chronic. This may be due to the persistence of the allergen in the environment or the diet, or because the immune system remains in a state of hyper-reactivity as other imbalances in the body (e.g. digestive and immune dysregulation) perpetuate the allergic response. HOW TO BUILD UP TOLERANCE * Restore Immune Balance - the key treatment target * Enhance Mucosal Defences - the first line of defence against allergens * Heal the Gut - the prime regulator of immunity * Support Detoxification - to aid removal of environmental toxins and allergens As NATUROPATHS we can develop a individualised plan based around these principles to improve your immune dysregulation and the associated frequency and/or severity of your allergies. Book your FREE Health Check at Hills Natural Health to see how we can help you.

04.01.2022 Hey everyone, I thought I'd touch on the subject of mental health. Have you taken the time to stop and asses how you are feeling emotionally? Mentally? Internally? Have you noticed that your body holds certain postures, and sensations in conjunction with with these feelings? For example if you are in a state of depression a lot of people tend to become almost lethargic, lacking energy and motivation to do anything. Your body tends to slouch more, your head and shoulders tend... to curl in forwards. Holding this posture for extended periods of time can cause tension in your back, neck & shoulders. You feel a sense of "pressure" in your stomache and chest. Remedial massage is great for the release of hypertonic muscles, but Swedish/ relaxation is great for the mind and general tension relief, in conjuction with seeing a qualified counsellor, Psychologist and/or Psychiatrist. Your mental and physical wellbeing/ alignment is the most important thing before anything or anyone else, you need to make sure that you are doing well first and for most so that you can do all the things you wish to do, and help those you wish to help. Have a great weekend everyone, look after yourselves. -Tyson-

03.01.2022 Here are some simple suggestions and a recipe to help you survive the winter months. As it's already July, only two months to go. Stay hydrated: winter is not the time of year we think about drinking water but it is common for us to feel dehydrated. Everyone reaches for a coffee or tea instead of water which results in us clearing water from our system. Dry heat from heaters and wood burning stoves tend to dry out the air. If you prefer warm drinks, try hot water with lem...on, herbal teas or if desperate for a coffee, choose decaffeinated. Dry skin can be one indication there is not enough water in your body. Exercise regularly: most people have taken time off from exercise during the worst months of Covid 19. Make sure to stay active even if you don't go to a gym. Wet weather may be a deterrent but if you own a tv that can access the internet or a computer, try some workout videos on Youtube. Remember to choose a video that suits your abilities. Ease yourself in, don't go too hard too fast. Walking and cycling are great options to get you out of the house. If you belong to a gym or have use other fitness services, it may be a good time to return and break up the routine brought on by self isolation. Eat well/sleep well: keep your digestive and immune functioning optimally. We have come to understand that the gut controls everything, including the brain. Make sure to eat lots of healthy food to boost your immune system. Winter vegetables are easily accessible at the moment so why not turn them into comfort foods. Hearty stews and soups either with or without meat will help keep your belly full and do not have to be expensive. If you own a slow cooker or a multicooker, this is an ideal time of year to fire it up. Instead of rice or noodles, try quinoa which is high in fibre and protein, gluten free and has all the essential amino acids. I have attached a link for a Jamie Oliver recipe for a minestrone soup which can be made with or without meat and can help you use bits and pieces you may have in your cupboard and fridge. https://www.jamieoliver.com/r/soup-recipes/minestrone-soup/ As we tell all of our clients, make the time to stay healthy, especially in the winter. We are here six days a week and are happy to help you on your journey to getting well and staying well.
