24.01.2022 RECEPTION NATIVITY One of our favourite things here at HILLS is the Nativity Story told by the Reception students. The COVID-19 restrictions may mean we need to do things a little different this year but we will still get to enjoy this delightful event.....differently. Off to the Faraway Lands they go.......... What fun they had performing for the video camera, making paper chains, doing Christmas art or just playing out in nature! We look forward to seeing the end result but here's just a little glimpse!

21.01.2022 SACSA FOOTY CHAMPIONS! YEAR 5/6 GIRLS Yesterday was quite the day for the Year 5/6 Footballers from HILLS. The girls team progressed through the minor rounds to the Grand Final undefeated and only conceding 1 goal. The dominant midfield supplied the forwards with relentless attacks which resulted in high scores in each game. The defence stood tall and made sure the opposition had little room to attack or score.... The Grand Final vs Cedar College promised to be a close encounter as both HILLS and Cedar had dominated their preliminary rounds. However, it was not to be as HILLS took out the win with an emphatic 36 0 scoreline An amazing display of teamwork, heart, determination, skill and spirit. Congratulations to all of the girls involved. YEAR 5/6 BOYS After a difficult start due to a mix-up in the draw and a rush to change ovals, the boys quickly settled down to what they do best, playing team football. The skills were elite and the bravery was fierce as the team worked together to dominate the preliminary rounds Losing only the initial game of the day, the boys went through to the Grand Final to play Portside. The GF turned out to be a nail biter as the boys took the win in overtime. An incredible result. What a day for HILLS! Blake Hammat | Years 5 & 7 PE Educator

19.01.2022 YEAR 9 FOOD TECH The dish of the day for the Year 9 students was a seasonal sweet savoury Apple, Ham and Caramelised Onion Galette. The students have learnt the artistry of French Cuisine and the skills and techniques of advanced rough puff pastry making which is a specialty that is offered throughout France.... Their dish incorporates specific preparation techniques which gives a rustic unique appearance. Unlike formal tarts and pies that are baked in plates, pans or molds, the open-faced Galette is shaped by hand and baked free-form directly onto a sheet of baking paper. With an infusion of sweet apple to this savoury dish, the students explored how to balance, enhance flavours that counteracts or offsets that flavor to achieve an even more harmonious taste. Kate Croxford | Food Tech Educator
19.01.2022 YEAR 8 LEARNING EXPLORATIONS Year 8 students conducted a zoom meeting with Indigenous AFL player, Chad Wingard as a part of their Learning Exploration ‘Indigenous Insights’. Students will explore the first contact of colonists with Indig...enous Australians, the stolen generation, land rights and culture. We will endeavour to answer the following questions. - What is the importance of understanding our Indigenous history? - What has happened over the last 200 years and how does it impact us today? - What can we do to make a positive impact in this space? Josh Noye | Year 8 Care Group Educator

17.01.2022 MRS KELLY’S YEAR 2 STUDENT & GOD’S BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS Mrs Kelly’s Year 2 students hosted our Monday Morning Devotions today. They brought some special guests with them, some of their class pets, much to the delight of the rest of the school. The Receptions down the front were mesmerized! Penny prayed Heavenly Father, thank you for all living things; for the birds we hear in the morning, for the kangaroos we see when we are outside, we give you thanks. We thank you for the ...gift of our own pets; for the joy they bring us, for the unconditional love and forgiveness which teaches us about you; for the companion, the listener, the stress-releaser, for the benefits they are to our health-and to our Spirit. We give you thanks. Tyler shared that this term, they have reflected on the blessings in their lives, particularly their pets. In our school we have tadpoles, stick insects, turtles, bearded dragons, mealworms, a spotted python, a yabby, a bird and more. Each day these animals enrich our lives and make coming to school just that bit better. During the Devotion, Alby was cuddling Princess Buttercup. He said to us, When I cuddle Princess Buttercup, one of our class bearded dragons I feel warm and I also feel happy and excited. Josh was holding Anna and shared this, When I hold Anna our class python it feels like there is a cushion around my neck. While Mason was holding Cuddles he said, I love holding Cuddles and Buttercup because they make me feel safe and calm. Even on my first try I felt happy. I can’t imagine what school would be like without them. It would be very disappointing with no animals. It would be a bit boring because I’m really into nature. ‘But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. In His hand is the life of every living thing’ (Job 12: 7, 8b, 10a)

Recently, we have introduced a 1 minute silence to help the children focus on their own breathing and on how they are feeling.... We also acknowledge the land that we meet on, is in our care and say the Acknowledgement of Country each morning, followed by a prayer. Twice a week we have Bush Kindy. The children are given time to explore nature and follow their own interests. Within this time their is always a challenge. This week the children were challenged to build a tower of 5 stones, those children who achieved this were then encouraged to build a taller tower. The ELC children and educators love exploring our beautiful grounds. Jenny Silver | Acting ELC Director

01.01.2022 SENSORY GARDEN Mrs Scadden’s Year 1 students helped Mrs Shepherd plant out the Sensory Garden near the Community Café today. They planted delicious plants that smell like lemon, peppermint and rose. They also planted a beautiful lemon tree for the Woolford Family. The Year 1s love watering and looking after this area. The plants already there are growing really well. It must be all the love that the students are giving them as they care for the garden!
01.01.2022 YEAR 6 CAMP | WIRRAWAY STRATHALBYN How fortunate were the Year 6 students? They managed to squeeze in their camp this week before the COVID-19 restrictions began!... Here are a few thoughts from some of the students: - It was a really great experience and I bonded more with my friends. Charlotte - Camp was an amazing experience and all of the activities were fun and interactive, especially, the horse riding. Erin - The whip cracking was my favourite. Kaiden - At the camp we did archery, sheep herding, whip cracking, bushwalks and trampolining. Josh - This week the Year 6s went to a camp called Wirraway in Strathalbyn. We were there for 3 days and 2 nights. We did a lot of fun activities like horse riding and low ropes. We had really good food and there were great free time activities. My highlight from camp was playing pool in my free time. Amari
