25.01.2022 Take some time to practise what the morning routine will look like once your child starts kindy. It’s a great opportunity for lots of positive talk about the new kindy experience as well. A side note: please remember to label all your child’s belongings! (ie.hat, drink bottle, lunchbox, spare clothes). It makes it much easier when everything is clearly labelled #hillsdon #tipsforstartingkindy #kindergarten #startingkindy #brisbane #taringa
22.01.2022 Please note the Hillsdon Kindergarten Open Day due to take place on the 2nd of May has been cancelled.

21.01.2022 Show your child how to open their lunchbox and any small containers they bring. Over the next few days you could practise by packing them a lunchbox and letting them eat from it at home. Encourage your child to dress themselves in the morning, pack their backpack before you go out and any other little jobs you can find around the house to encourage their independence. Of course, the staff at Hillsdon are always present and willing to help your child with any needs during th...e day! #hillsdon #kindergarten #independence #encourageindependence #tipsforstartingkindy #startingkindy #brisbane #taringa
21.01.2022 A beautiful song to sing along to at home. We know some of the kindy children already love this one.
21.01.2022 The use of symbols is an alternate way to write down stories of cultural significance, teaching survival and use of the land. Symbols are used by Aboriginal people in their art to preserve their culture and tradition. They are also used to depict various stories and are still used today in contemporary Aboriginal Art. This provocation provided the children with the opportunity to practise making Aboriginal symbols and is one of the ways we embed First Nations people and their culture in our curriculum. #aboriginalart #aboriginalaustralia #indigenousart #indigenoussymbols #earlychildhood #aboriginalandtorresstraitislander #firstnationspeople #alwayswasalwayswillbe #learningthroughplay #gowrieqld #hillsdon #kindergarten #brisbanekindy

19.01.2022 This week we are thinking about all the people we love and care about. Drawing ....sparks thoughts and makes thinking visible ...gives wings to the imagination ...encourages learning to see ...thrives as a means for inquiry and investigation, a visual language, particularly when children have company. (Ursula Kolbe)... At Hillsdon the children regularly engage in drawing which then enables them to make their thinking visible to others and feel empowered that their ideas are important enough to share. They are consolidating their thoughts, the details and what the next step will be.

18.01.2022 Here’s some tips for the very first day of your child’s kindergarten year! prepare the night before - pack the bags and lay out clothing. talk to your child about what is in their lunchbox. ... make sure you do say goodbye to your child, as disappearing quietly can cause more anxiety. if your child is having trouble separating, an educator will be ready to step in to help. We are well equipped to deal with this, and will give your child the care and support they need. It is important that once you do say goodbye, you do leave as it causes more confusion for your child if you keep coming back. call us if you are worried during the day! We are happy to give you an update. If we feel your child is not settling and becoming more distressed we will give you a call as well. be enthusiastic and positive! #tipsforstartingkindy #tipsforthefirstdayofkindy #hillsdon #kindergarten #brisbane #taringa #firstday #nerves #enthusiastic

17.01.2022 Drawing from observation: The excitement of hatching chickens, watching as they dry and become fluffy; watching how they feed; how they sleep. Looking at the chickens feet, their beaks; asking questions and considering the difference between the baby chickens down and feathers and so much more Drawing can be central to childrens shared investigations. The opportunity to learn with and from children as co-explorers. Each person sees differently, each chooses different parts to draw. It always involves interactions between seeing and reasoning, feeling and memory as well as interaction with materials. The more opportunities children have to draw from life and look intently at things -finding them infinitely more complex, strange and wonderful than they had imagines the more enjoyment they are likely to experience.
17.01.2022 Please go to the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre page and give our Easter Egg a like!
16.01.2022 Last week we found a cicada exoskeleton outside in the playground. As the children passed it to each other, they talked about what they observed, how it felt, where the cicada is now - and why he left his skin behind! Judith Roden says close observation of children at play suggests that they find out about the world in the same way as scientists find out about new phenomena and test new ideas....during this exploration, all the senses are used to observe and draw conclusio...ns about objects and events through simple, scientific investigations At Hillsdon we strive to create these natural learning situations every day. We use teacher scaffolding, an inquiry process and hold the strong belief that children are capable and competent meaning makers of their world . . . #stem #earlychildhoodstem #earlychildhood #hillsdonkindergarten #kindy #kindergarten #children #play #learningthroughplay #inquiry #inquiryprocess #childrensquestions #taringa #brisbane #play See more

15.01.2022 Thank you to the Hillsdon children and families for an amazing term 2. Whilst we never could have imagined what the last 12 weeks would look like on a global scale, we are incredibly proud of our community and your ability to embrace the changes we have been faced with. Gratifyingly, even in the midst of vastly new ways of doing things, we note that the children continue to drive our programs with their thirst for learning and knowledge. The resilience, acceptance and growth demonstrated by every child is a constant inspiration for us all. We wish you all a restful, safe and healthy holiday break. The Hillsdon Team x

12.01.2022 Children are developing a sense of connectedness to their world. This connectedness helps them relate to the values, traditions and practices of their families, kindergartens, communities and the wider world. It supports them to learn about the interconnectedness of people and environments. Over time, this learning transforms the ways they interact with others and how they think about the world as global citizens. QKLG

07.01.2022 Educational lessons for QLD kids at home for children from kindy to year 2. This might be helpful for your learning at home.
07.01.2022 At the beginning of the year we focus on drawing a self portrait. In this particular provocation we have added mirrors for the children to explore their facial expressions and features. Drawing self-portraits is about self-identity - developing a perception of self. ‘This is me, this is who I am. I am unique and special’. Over time drawing self-portraits can also help children develop their observational, expressive and reflective skills. This connects to our curriculum in... the developmental areas of Identity, Wellbeing and Connectedness (QKLG). #hillsdon #selfportraits #selfesteem #wellbeing #identity #childrensidentity #connect #connectedness #ladygowrie #qklg #childrenlearningthroughart #selfexpression #kindergarten #taringa #brisbanekindy #hillsdonroad
07.01.2022 In This Together At kindy this week we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au
06.01.2022 We would like to say a HUGE thank you to @indooroopillyshopping centre for displaying our works of art for the last 2 weeks. We have had so many comments from parents and families about how much their child enjoyed seeing their own piece of art displayed in such a public place. This display was so beautifully presented, which gave the children a sense of pride that they themselves had created such a wall of beauty. Displaying the children’s work gives them a chance to think ...about their past - how they created it and the steps they took to the finished piece. They have the opportunity to talk about their work and make plans for future work. Finally, well displayed artwork informs others about early childhood education and the value we place on the work of children. It shows the children we are proud of them and gives them a sense of achievement. We are so proud of the children of Hillsdon, with how they have shown resilience and adaptability in a year of unknowns and changed routines. This art wall is a culmination of this year - and we hope the community has found just as much enjoyment in viewing it as the children did creating the art pieces. #hillsdon #hillsdonartshow2020 #hillsdonartshow #indooroopillyshoppingcentre #earlylearning #earlyeducationmatters #displayingchildrensart #kindergarten #gowrie #ladygowrie Indooroopilly Shopping Centre Lady Gowrie Queensland

06.01.2022 This week we’d like to post some tips for all the new families starting kindy this year. Our first is...be positive about this new experience. Talk with your child about all the fun things they will do, all the friends they will make and all the new things they will learn. Drive past the kindy as often as you can and point it out and talk about it enthusiastically. Some children do find it hard to initially separate from their caregivers, but this step can create a positive... connection between you (as their home base) and us (as their place of care and new community experience). #startingkindy #creatingconnection #positiveexperience #enthusiasm #excitement #kindy2021 #hillsdon #taringa #learningthroughplay
06.01.2022 At Hillsdon, our aim is to promote reconciliation and to strengthen childrens knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. Acknowledgement of the Traditional Owners of the Land. Hillsdon recognises the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the country on which we live, work, learn and grow. We show respect to traditional owners and custodians, the Turrbal and Jagera people, by saying an Acknowle...dgement to Country daily. These are the words we say: Here is the Land, And, Here is the Sky, Here are my Friends, And, Here am I. We also display a physical acknowledgment to the traditional owners of our land on our kindy fence. This week and last we have all spent time creating posters acknowledging Reconciliation Week and have added them to our kindy fence. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags. We display the two flags representing the First Australians - one representing Aboriginal peoples and one representing Torres Strait Islander peoples. Flying the flags shows our respect for the First Australians. We have discussed the colours and symbols on the flags with the children at group-time. Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in our Curriculum and Resources. Our aim is to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in everyday experiences, all through the year. We regularly read dreamtime Stories in our literacy group-times. Creation or dreamtime stories often explain how the country, animals and people came to be as they are. They tell us when things were made, why they were made and how they were made. We also use Aboriginal music and songs in our music group-times. Resources and materials in the classroom are selected to reflect diversity, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture

01.01.2022 There is plenty of opportunity for water play in our environment at Hillsdon Kindy. We recognise its value and include it in our daily program. Water play provides hours of rich and valuable early childhood experiences, which develop childrens creativity and imagination. It helps children develop eye-hand coordination (as they scoop, sift, funnel and pour). Playing in water develops maths/science concepts and enhances social skills by providing opportunities for children to practice collaborative play and sharing. #waterplay #playingwithwater #childrenandwater #learningthroughplay #playbasedlearning #hillsdonkindy #brisbanekindy #kindergarten #science #maths
01.01.2022 Happy day of love! #hillsdon #brisbanekindy #valentinesday #childrensbooks #love #somanybooks
01.01.2022 We have been viewing some episodes of Little J and Big Cuz (which you can find on the iview app and website). The show follows the everyday life of two Aboriginal school children as they explore their indigenous identity, connection to country, traditional knowledge and cultural practices. We believe we have a responsibility to value and promote greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and being. Research suggests that providing childre...n with opportunities to watch how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families relate to each other, and to non-Indigenous people, can - with teacher guidance - enable children to reflect on how to see and interact with cultures other than their own. As it is not always practical for educators to provide such opportunities face-to-face, digital technology presents an alternative way in. We make use of this program as a way to introduce these ideas to the children of Hillsdon. #hillsdon #culturalcompetency #indigenous #aboriginalandtorresstraitislander #culturalcompetencyforchildren #littlejandbigcuz #iview #abciview #digitaltechnology
