25.01.2022 Shared by a lovely parent - apparently these books about healthy habits are being given away at Big W.

24.01.2022 Congrats to our lucky winner Deviyani Nair! You all are such a beautiful family. Hills Speech and Learning Centre hopes you enjoy the Lenovo E10 prize!

24.01.2022 Dont forget to have fun learning play time as children learn best through play. Its simple, its fun - get started

24.01.2022 School readiness tips for children starting kindergarten next year: - Regularly talk about starting school during the holiday period. You can recall orientation day. These conversations can be supplemented with social stories, photos and visuals. Make sure to be positive! - Walk or drive past school if you can to refresh your child’s memory - Focus on exciting things e.g. new uniform, new drink bottle, new friends etc ... - Help them get and feel independent like a big boy/girl. They can be encouraged to help or take charge with simple tasks around the house e.g. being your little helper in the kitchen, setting the table for dinner, watering the plants, sorting the washing etc. Some parents have been concerned as they have not yet heard from the Department of Education about their child’s school placement for next year due to issues e.g. Covid-19, limited spots in support classes etc. Don’t panic - you’re not alone and others are in the same boat. The Department takes full care and it’s their responsibility to make sure each child is appropriately placed.

23.01.2022 Dont forget to use the strategies and techniques discussed in the parent training sessions! It is a difficult time for everyone, and it can be even harder for children who may not be able to express how they are feeling or who have emotional regulation difficulties.

22.01.2022 Are you concerned about your childs processing speed, i.e. the time they take to process information? Is it their auditory, visual or general ability/ processing speed that youre concerned about? Having a slow processing speed can be indicative of learning and attention difficulties, such as ADHD, dyslexia and auditory processing disorder. Heres an informative video to watch if youre interested in finding out how a slow processing speed could be affecting your child. ... https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=HFa33hpMU_I

22.01.2022 Respecting individual differences is the key!

21.01.2022 No matter how old your children are -they need your magic hugs

21.01.2022 Online sessions can be interactive, fun and productive - and are also a great way of equipping parents with strategies and ways to be resourceful through their everyday routines. If you havent booked your Telehealth session yet, its worth a try!

20.01.2022 So far, Hills Speech and Learning Centre has only been providing Telehealth services to clients in rural areas and internationally. Given the need of the hour in light of the current COVID19 pandemic, we have been expanding this service to provide therapy to our local clients so that children dont have to miss out on sessions and their learning. If you are required to self-isolate, or prefer to access online services as an alternative to face-to-face within the current climate, please feel free to email or message.

20.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all lovely dads and grandads who work so hard for their children and families!

19.01.2022 When you dont acknowledge your feelings, you are allowing these emotions to become stronger. If feelings could talk! Teach to identify, label and regulate emotions.

19.01.2022 Being creative and getting involved with children can help families function as a team around the child. Beautiful example of a very dedicated family who took time and initiative to support their son. All you need is some cardboard boxes and you can get started! Below: on the left is a house for the stuffed toy, complete with a roof and chimney. On the right is a maze for a different toy.

18.01.2022 Beautiful animation explaining autism. It’s all about embracing and respecting individual differences! Autism is a different way of looking at things. Children on the spectrum have a lot of potential - give them a chance and opportunities.

18.01.2022 "If your child currently stutters or has stuttered recently, it's important to seek professional input as soon as possible". Great article from Very Well Family!

17.01.2022 Create the need to talk. If a child gets all their needs met (food, toys, changed etc) without having to express themselves, then how will they learn to communicate? Encourage your little one to watch you, because watching leads to imitation (copying), and imitation leads to learning. Encourage them to observe your mouth, your facial expressions and your actions. This helps them to copy actions, sounds and words.

16.01.2022 Fun way to practice these animal names and soundshttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WbpKj0F-Z3s

15.01.2022 It is great to be able to keep up with professional development and interdisciplinary meetings even when we can’t have them face-to-face. These online Covid-friendly sessions help myself and other professionals to share our knowledge, debrief and learn from each other!

14.01.2022 Book of the week: Where is the Green Sheep? All the children had fun exploring different types of sheep. Some enjoyed drawing too!

14.01.2022 Professional learning online (and lots of fun too!)

13.01.2022 At Hills Speech and Learning Centre, it has been an incredibly busy Term 1. The Covid-19 situation was a challenging period, but definitely didnt mean that there was a pause on therapy. Services continued with online speech therapy sessions and parent training. This was a time to empower families to help their children cope with additional needs e.g. homeschooling, school readiness, sibling involvement etc. Almost all families have transitioned to online speech therapy and ...are already seeing the benefit. If you have missed out, its not too late because speech therapy will resume again in Term 2 (27/04/20). Have a good break and stay safe everyone! P.S. images have been blurred to protect client confidentiality.

13.01.2022 Autumn leaves When the leaves change color, you can talk about colours, change, same & different. Pile them up, kick them away, blow them - and dont forget about turn taking skills!

12.01.2022 Welcome to our new speech pathology students, Nicole and Amanda! They are in their final year of their Masters in Speech Pathology at UTS, and youll be seeing them around for the next 10 weeks. We thank all our clients for supporting the future speech pathologists. If youd like any extra information or have any questions or concerns, please dont hesitate to ask.

12.01.2022 Offering children choices can be a good way to build their decision-making and encourage them to express themselves, allowing them to build their independence and share their likes and dislikes. Offer choices between two objects, food items, clothing - anything you fancy! Pick up one preferred item in one hand, and one non-preferred item in the other hand, and label the two individually as you present your child with a choice e.g. would you like the book or the ball? or would you like to wear the red t-shirt or the green t-shirt? Your child can make the decision by pointing, reaching for the item or trying to say the word.

11.01.2022 All our sessions are going ahead as usual through : Telehealth/ video conferencing (online)from this week onwards. Telehealth Speech Pathology is simply described as online SP services usually delivered through web, videoconferencing, phone calls, emails etc.... This will help ensure continuity of services during this difficult time. We dont know how long this will be for so it is important to continue services in order to prevent your child from regressing. Telehealth may not be suitable for all of our clients so we will also be offering this with week-by-week home programs and parent training. Please contact us about this for more information. Telehealth sessions require significantly more preparation and set up so please book your sessions in advance.

11.01.2022 A quick tip : Don’t forget the ratio 4:1 for commenting : questioning. Basically, focus more on making statements and expanding on what your child has said, following their lead. Comment on your actions and your child’s actions instead of quizzing and questioning them constantly. This can deter your child from expressing themselves as they become self-conscious and feel that they’re always being tested.

11.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful mums & grandmothers who work tirelessly to make sure their children have the best opportunities every day

09.01.2022 At Hills Speech and Learning Centre, we are offering telehealth for clients of all ages. I have been thrilled by how successful teletherapy has been in helping all my clients continue to make gains. Several parents were concerned that their young ones wouldnt be able to engage with therapy online, but this has not been the case! As there are plenty of fun and engaging games and tools being used to keep learning fun, children are responding really well and are constantly learning new skills. I personally have found it really beneficial to see my clients in their home environment where they are comfortable. Parents are reporting they feel empowered which is such a great thing to hear.

07.01.2022 Interactive activities using technology and fun games add another dimension to learning. At HSLC, there are activities for all ages to meet individual needs and have fun!

06.01.2022 Easy tips to get the most out of interactions with your child! https://clearcommunicators.com.au/asking-your-child-questi/

06.01.2022 April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism awareness should be embedded in every day! Letting you know that AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) such as Proloquo2Go are running sales at the moment, so its a good time to buy.

06.01.2022 Today is the Global Handwashing Day (GHD). It is an international handwashing promotion campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits. Washing hands at critical points during the day and washing with soap are very important. Don’t forget to dry your hands.

05.01.2022 I often get asked questions regarding when it is normal for a child to start combining words. Some examples of two word combinations include go car, want bubbles, more ball etc. Children progress at different rates, but it’s a good idea to have a general awareness of developmental milestones so that help can be sought if needed. On average, children can start combining two words by 18 months of age. 24 months is considered the ‘milestone’. After this point, it may be a good idea to get your child assessed to make sure everything is okay. Sometimes people may believe that your child will catch up or grow out of it, but it’s always a good idea to speak to credible sources.

04.01.2022 Everyone expresses their emotions differently, but its important to identify, recognise, process and regulate emotions in an effective way. Beautiful drawings by a primary school student describing sadness, anger and hardship. To enhance emotional regulation, encourage your child to label and express their emotions. Draw attention towards other peoples feelings.

03.01.2022 Coronavirus: With the recent coronavirus outbreak, there is a worldwide scare of getting the virus. The virus is nowhere near as deadly as the media would claim for it to be, and in fact, the flu causes significantly more fatalities per year. That being said, the virus is highly communicable and is spreading rapidly, and its always a good idea to maintain hygiene practices to limit spread and acquisition of the virus. Here are some hygiene practices to help minimise spread.

02.01.2022 No matter how slow the progress is, dont forget to celebrate your childs achievements. Always take into account how hard children work. Every little improvement counts! I was touched to see the overwhelming positivity of all parents who commented to win the Lenovo tablet in the competition a few days ago. Despite difficult circumstances, you all managed to see efforts and improvement which is the most important thing! Stay positive!

01.01.2022 A debate about the "best way" to teach reading has been raging for decades. In what is often described as the "reading wars"-"phonics," on the one side, or "whole language," on the other. Take a quick look at the research- https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=c7UZP3irJ3I
