25.01.2022 Happy birthday today to my mother! Here she was last year celebrating her 99th birthday. What a life shes had. Born in Paris in 1920, in an apartment just off Champs Élysée, in the height of the Spanish Flu epidemic (2 with her Greek expat father & French mother & grandma)... 3 & 4;At age 3 her parents moved to Havana, where mum learnt fluent Spanish & frequently went to the Opera with her music-obsessed parents. Business boomed until 1929 Depression stopped all visits from prohibition-era USA, forcing her father to liquidate at loss & return to Paris.. till age 14, off to Athens.. school finally & learns Greek, but teenage years (hears an unknown Maria Callas sing) turn to 4 years horror of Nazi occupation & starvation. Still advances studies & escapes to Egypt in 44 (meets Lawrence Durrell in Alexandria), then to France to Uni (Sartre a boring lecturer) shuttling back & forth to Egypt. 1950 emigrates to Sydney to get married to my Alexandrian father - learns English, has 3 boys, works FT as teacher & supports 3 aged non-English speaking grandparents.. 5 & 6; Almost dies of undiagnosed kidney stones in mid 60s.. last throw operation specialist removes kidney & says she may make it to age 60! (What would they know - a favourite saying) 7, 8 & 9; In her mid 50s completes MAHons in Marcel Proust @ Syd Uni..4 years after work on ironing board in laundry. After dads death buys new flat @ 86 & works part time till 90.. 10; If you want an account of C20th just ask her- I tell grandkids - after all she been through it all!

Built by engineers of #sydneyharbourtrust 1912-17 as part of major port & public housing project-still unsurpassed as a piece of #citymaking Sandstone & cement, & a bit of effort to climb up them! And cut into the base are retrofitted toilets for the workers- never seen the insides.
