23.01.2022 Hi welcome to Hilltop Hooves Horsemanship Center. At Hilltop Hooves I do things a little differently! I value the horse as he is naturally, and aim to provide as Natural a life as possible for horses, whilst helping them to learn how to deal with a human environment as easily as possible. I have my personal horses here available for lessons in Practical Horsemanship. What that means is... - You will learn everything about owning a horse. I start with haltering your horse, how to brush and then how to do ground work with your horse, in order to teach you about the individual nature of that horse and how to connect with him before you ever get on his back. - once you are clear and really confident with the horse you are working with then we will start the process of saddling the horse and learning how to ride naturally with body dynamics that are congruent with excellent riding. - if you are already an experienced rider, we will take you from where you're at, and if there's any areas that needs more time or information we will spend time to learn about those things. My aim is to have a few select students, who are dedicated to learning natural horsemanship and connecting with the horse they having lessons on creating a relationship. With a view to this, my lessons are not a short time with the horse. I do not rent out my horses for half an hour at a time to 8 students a day and use them to make money. I offer 1 1/2 hour lessons to up to 3 students per horse and that is all. Each week those students will get to know their horse and the horse will get to know them, just like if you owned a horse yourself. My horses are happy to see their person coming to halter them, and often meet us at the gate Once you are confident you will join a shared lesson and for the same price the lesson will extend to 2 or 3 hours depending on how many students are in the group. This creates a lovely relaxed learning environment for the horse and the human. As students become competent, the opportunity for trail rides and participation in clinics will become available. My pony Boss is suitable for beginner riders up to 65kg. Diesel and Cruise are capable of taking riders through foundation training to competition level. Ricki is for intermediate riders, who are relaxed and sensitive. Ricki is very well trained, but very sensitive, and for that reason not suitable for a complete beginner. Thanks for reading. I look forward to meeting you!

20.01.2022 Truly a heart of gold magic happens at Hilltop Hooves

19.01.2022 We had a lovely spot of weather yesterday with the promise of spring on the way. Brooke is a very dedicated student of the horse, and has been over the past few months getting to know Ricki, and starting riding with him too, after Ricki's three year break whilst out on lease. Ricki is a wonderful horse, however very very sensitive, and tends to be sceptical about people until he trusts them. Brooke has been earning that trust, and yesterday it all came together beautifully, with following her focus for direction becoming accurate, and then playing with transitions and straightness on the circle to build natural collection and engagement. It was a joy to see it coming together, well done Brooke!

The student and horse really get to know each other, and you can form a partnership with them as if they were yours. My horses are very very happy to be out of the small paddocks, with their new auto waterers, thanks to the help of Sharon Jury and Graham Bacon. Onwards and upwards to having more time to spend with my horses See more

02.01.2022 Introducing Cruise Cruise is the newest member of my herd, but that doesn't mean I don't know him! He was bred by my best friend Sharon Jury and holidayed at H...illtop Hooves through his life. He has been raised naturally, and had excellent education in ground skills, liberty work, freestyle riding, and riding with a soft feel. Cruise is a very experienced trail pony, and likes jumping too. Cruise has attended riding club, clinics. He has the sweetest nature, and everyone who has met him have really loved him, not the least of all me! I adore him already. His favourite relaxation is rolling, so if he becomes your equine partner......I hope you like brushing! 01.01.2022 What to do when it’s an awful day

01.01.2022 A little musing on progression with Tommy's float loading. This isn't something everybody will want to take the time to do but I'm a person who really values t...he horse finding relaxation in their time with us and that includes going somewhere else. So this is a bit of a talk about what my goal is with the horse once he can already load into the float, understands how to yield calmly in all directions, and is confident with through, over and under obstacles. So what I observed with Tommy once we had travelled a few places is that's when his anxiety came up. He was a horse that I could very easily load into the float open and close all the doors and he would happily be in there eating away. Then I took him on some drives to some clinics and he got anxious due to his environment changing. Horses are very aware of what happens before happens, happens. Tommy had started anticipating that closing the doors meant we were going somewhere. So the first thing I did when I had some spare time, I popped him back in the float with a buddy to keep him company. This got him quickly back to the place where he looked forward to going to the float and I could leave him in there to relax while I went and did some chores. Today I transitioned this into loading on his own. I did lots of confidence building with closing the tailgate, the storm door, then the personal access door. I waited until signs of adrenaline passed, e.g. Tommy could eat calmly, not be shunting back and forth and head lower. Having hay in the float won't necessarily help encourage the horse to be confident, but it does help you easily see small signs of when he is stressed, the eating pattern will change straight away. Then in the reverse, opening all the doors and not have Tommy assume it means he is coming out. Wait for relaxation with each step. And finally opening the breach bar without him coming out. If he does, reload and wait for relaxation. If unloading causes another stress spike then simply end the session well by allowing them to wait and relax with 2 feet on the tailgate. The key is the horse sees the float as the place to rest and relax. If relaxation is not achieved retreat from the float but then come back to the float until relaxation is achieved. During your session really try to reward the horse when the horse is mentally in the float not thinking out of the door, out of the back. If you can reward your horse every time he is content with being in that will become the habit. He will realise that he has no need to be out of the float to be safe. This certainly is not the only thing you can do to help your horse be more confident in the float. But it is a reminder of how you leave the float is often how the horse will go to the float. Remember most actions of horses come from a place of needing to feel safe. When horses feel safe they are exceptionally patient and giving animals. When you are seeing a lack of patience or dangerous behaviour chances are your horse is feeling they are not in a safe place. All the best with your floating and please feel free to share your experiences See more

01.01.2022 Thanks to Carolyn, Denise, Julie and Megan for coming to the getting started workshop, and making it such a great session with positive attitudes, and such respect for your horses, and helping them learn to be great learners. Putting the foundation in place can take a bit of time, but it's well worth the effort to have your horse calm, thinking, and understanding how to find comfort with their human partners. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you again to find the next answers to the puzzle.
