25.01.2022 Just soaking in the Hillview!

25.01.2022 A chilly start to the day, but boy is it spectacular now. How...is...the...scerenity! And, a happy 4th of July to our American friends.

24.01.2022 Our Hillview team are doing a teriffic job of getting our neglected pasture into shape. Always concerned for their health, we are checking for dangerous weeds before letting them loose, but they get super excited when there is new territory to graze. What has been a mild and wet winter so far means there's a nice tinge of green coming through after the cattle have been over it. Also looking forward to the results of soil testing so we can confidently develop great pasture for the future.

23.01.2022 Great news. Hillview's first calf has arrived. A little heifer from Oakvale Meant To Be and champion sire Oakvale Man-O-Man. Say g'day to Hillview Nimbin Rosie.

23.01.2022 This is Oakvale "Need You" (N26). She's a heifer carrying her first calf and due to give birth in the next three weeks. We're really looking forward to introducing the first Hillview calf. He or She will have tag number R1.

22.01.2022 Well, it's pretty damp in the Northern Rivers, but we are in good shape compared to plenty of other folks. The herd is soggy but stoic and they'll never turn their noses up to some fresh, dry hay. Our very best wishes to anyone in the Square Meaters "family" and the wider community who is doing it tough. Help is just a phone call away if you need it...don't be too proud to ask. Stay safe.

16.01.2022 I was a little apprehensive when our young bull 'Platinum' met our neighbour's bull at our boundary. Although Platinum displayed quite assertive behaviour, our neighbour's bull only seemed interested in one of his girls. So, it seems that honour was satisfied and both sides went about their business.

16.01.2022 Australian Square Meaters are a wonderfully calm breed of cattle. Everyone is loving their relaxed nature.

15.01.2022 A glorious day at Hillview today. We are beginning to feel the Spring warmth in the sun. Great for pastures and nice for our first calf, which we are expecting in the next few weeks. Cheers!

13.01.2022 Fantastic news! Today we welcome Hillview Nimbin Sapphire (S2) to the team. A bright little heifer, she's in good hands (hooves) with her dam, the experienced Oakvale Foxy Lady (F9). She is the last calf in the first group of calves from our foundation cows. We're now looking forward to the next group of calves from our own sire, Oakvale Platinum.

13.01.2022 We're gradually introducing the Hillview team to different parts of the property. Starting small allows us to gradually regenerate pastures and improve fences that have been neglected, as well as generally develop other infrastructure.

11.01.2022 Meet the herd. Our foundational stock are all from Oakvale Square Meaters at Wondai QLD, run by Gary and Heather Sewell. Gary has provided five terrific cows (all in calf), including the 2019 Toowoomba Show award winning OAKVALE My Girl! The other cows also originate from quality lines including "Woolaringa" and "Mandalong", as well as from Oakvale's own champion sire Leroy Brown. Looking to get back some condition after weaning, the girls are settling well at "Hillview"; we expect calving to begin in early August. Oakvale Platinum, our young (18mth) bull has also settled in as our foundation sire.

11.01.2022 The weather is warming up now and we've had a bit of spring rain, so the paddocks are starting to green-up. We are still providing plenty of additional feed, especially as most of the cows are in the last month or two of pregnancy.

10.01.2022 Our crazy hound, Max, is getting the hang of being around cattle. Both are still wary of each other, but things look promising.

04.01.2022 What young bull wouldn't love a nice pile of lucerne! 'Oakvale Platinum' is our young commercial bull. He won't be the mainstay of our stud enterprise, but he'll be great to help us establish a sound foundation herd over the next couple of years.
