21.01.2022 Today is the International Day of Rural Women, which aims to recognise the crucial role that women and girls play in ensuring the sustainability of rural househ...olds and communities and improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing. While we are fortunate to hold the records of a large number of Australian pastoral stations dating back to the mid-1800s, it is often the case that the women from these stations are rarely featured in the records we have received. One collection that does include records relating to women living and working in rural Australia is our collection of Australian Century Farm and Station Awards (http://archivescollection.anu.edu.au//australian-century-f). These records relate to the Century Farms Program which acknowledges Australian agricultural heritage through the recognition of properties that have been owned and operated by the same family for more than 100 years. Some of the properties currently recognised through this program are: - Tambua Station (Cobar, NSW) - Holowiliena Station (Cradock, SA) - Redlands Farm (Yackandandah, VIC) - Minniecrow Station (Kingston, SA) - Chocolate Hills (Dingo, QLD) - Yetambah (Nyngan, NSW) - Alpana Station (Flinders Ranges, SA) - Gilberton Station (Einasleigh, QLD) We are fortunate to hold some family histories compiled by the owners of these farms and stations within this collection. If you are interested in the history and roles of women in Australian agriculture, then you may like to visit the Invisible Farmer Project (https://invisiblefarmer.net.au/). Invisible Farmer is a 3 year project funded by the Australian Research Council (2017-2020) that constitutes the largest ever study of Australian women on the land.
