21.01.2022 Media Release - Hinchinbrook Residents Urged to Mark Police Remembrance Day Hinchinbrook Shire residents have been urged to acknowledge Police Remembrance Day today, as a mark of respect for the men and women who serve our community as part of the thin blue line. Hinchinbrook Shire Acting Mayor, Andrew Cripps, said police officers do an extremely important job protecting life and property every day in our local community, in what can often be a thankless and difficult role.... Cr Cripps said each year, Police Remembrance Day was an opportunity for all Australians to remember those officers killed in the line of duty and to offer our support to those police families that have lost a loved one. We acknowledge our police officers go to work every day, knowing they could be putting themselves in harm’s way, but understand how important their role is in ensuring the safety of our community said Cr Cripps. Police Remembrance Day is the opportunity we have each year to really stop and think about the outstanding service of our police officers and to show respect for the many officers who have paid a high price he said. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the normal memorial services held on Police Remembrance Day will not be going ahead, so I urge Hinchinbrook residents to show their appreciation in other ways. If you would like to show your support and appreciation for our retired and serving police, you can make a donation and pick up a memorial ribbon from the front counter of the Ingham Police Station, or the Halifax Police Station.

08.01.2022 Recycle Right - ACTION #4 Keep it clean. No soiled paper & tissues or nappies. Let’s RECYCLE RIGHT by keeping it clean! Paper towels, tissues and nappies don’t belong in your recycling bin. To start with, paper towels and tissues are often created from recycled paper, so they've already been through the recycling process several times. Though it is great purchasing recycled products, with every cycle, the fibres in the paper get shorter. By the time the paper's been reincar...nated as a paper towel or tissue, the fibres are too short to be used again. But also, used paper towels, tissues and nappies are usually contaminated with bodily fluids. Not only are most bodily fluids greasy and can therefore stain the new batch of recycled paper, but recyclables are usually sorted by hand during the recycling process. Meaning that someone will have to manually remove the soiled item to ensure that the rest of the load is not contaminated. So please don’t put these in your yellow bin. TIP: Avoid paper towels and tissues ending up in the landfill by composting at home. Most paper products are also compostable! Why not try reusable nappies in place of disposable ones? Let’s not waste our efforts, keep your recycling contamination free to keep it coming ‘round. #recycleright #lesstolandfill #waronwasteau #dontletagoodthinggotowaste #dontwastehinchinbrook #keepitclean

07.01.2022 NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK: STEP 5 - TREASURE YOUR TECH Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Australia. Constant upgrading of devices and low rates of recycling means landfills are filling up with valuable resources and hazardous materials, or worse, leaching into our waterways and potentially causing problems for wildlife and human health. Sending e-waste to landfill has already been banned in Victoria and is a priority for the Australian Government u...nder the Product Stewardship Act. E-waste is not recyclable in your kerbside bin. This includes virtually any appliance with a plug or battery such as mobile phones, TVs and computers. Did you know? Each Australian disposed of 21.7kg of e-waste per year which is one of the highest amounts in the world.
