17.01.2022 LESSON # 1 joint construction The Dowel the industrial revolutions ultimate symble of nasty construction embodys everything that the period has achieved in furniture failure. once timber was joined within each other bareface to cheek timber to timber ,the Dowel allows the creator to cut parts to their finished size and simply butt them together ,perfect for the unskilled the slap dash ,the craftsless craftperson .... you may save in the beginning but eventually youl have to get it repaired .especially if the furniture travels . the trend hasnt ended either the improved version is a biscuit joiner and more recently the domino . while these systems have there place there more for aligning a connection not actually making a quality joint . they represent fast manufacturing solution that saves on time money ,the need to train someone to actually be skilled . it occurs to me that generally most people dont really understand what to look for when making a purchase .a flashy looking item combined with an attractive price is enough for many and the restrictions of budget often incentive still ask the real questions ! please "How is it constructed ",if the sales person doesnt even know think twice go see a real tradesperson . Im a little tired of fixing poor quality furniture designed to fail ,cheep construction methods shamefully chosen to reduce cost .. this table pictured ,popular in its day has good elements the oval top has a solid timber rim, apron with timber bead but the pedastool feet are badly shaped and simply doweled onto the post ,its a shameful method for this design . hard to repair , disappointing I may have repaired this one but only to show you . Lesson 1 joint quality, any joint that would clearly be vulnerable to stress movement from loads or forces of weight should be designed to suit . mechanical by nature preferably ( meaning would hold together even without glue locks into place ) make a good choice here enough the lesson :)

15.01.2022 Laminate or whats called plastic laminate is made up of several layers of paper impregnated with thermal settings glue under great pressure to produce a hard surface product for horizontal bench tops The first picture is vanity we called banjos back in the 80s.walked into a clients house this week to see this one I made 30 years ago as an apprentice still looks great The curved corner desk and black island bench I made last month Laminating is a forgotten skill very fe...w can do it properly for durability as its been replaced with round edge or post form tops the skill is lost . 04.01.2022 these last weeks I was excited to travel to Kazan Russia, with the most motivated group of skilled Aussies, for the 45 worldskill competition, a four day comp to test your skills at the highest level. competing alongside 1,340 competitors from 62 other countries its clear the level of skill we have in Australia. a pressure test of speed accuracy and timing to produce world standard products ,for cabinetmaking this was a two door single dovetails drawer hall stand made in O...ak with diamond veneered decorative top , Josh Boon from tassie came 6th out 30 all most a medal performance .great to see and be part of out teams journey we fielded 15 competitors across diverse skills ,graphic design to brick laying carpentry to fashion technology plumbing ,car painting . it was amazing for my part the wood trades hold a special place great to watch the journey unfold for 3 blokes tom neave joiner (Vic ) Josh Boon cabinetmaker (tas) Hayden Dillon carpentry (nsw) all Australian champions in there skill thanks to world skills the most talented unskilled tradies around I get to see the best practice highest performance skilled people from all the world in one place pitted in contest against a world standard I can honestly say I know what quality and best practice are having lived this contest for many years and hope it shows through in my work . We achieved 4 medals and many medallions of excellence for the team fantastic effort all round great experience look out for the 46th in Shanghai China
