19.01.2022 DELWP, La Trobe University and the Arthur Rylah Institute have just released a fact sheet of the results of a statewide revegetation survival monitoring project. The average survival of plants in the first summer, from 65 sites and 137 monitoring plots, was 61%. Sites in higher rainfall areas had higher survival than lower rainfall areas. Project Hindmarsh also monitors plant survival in the first summer. I will survey our 2020 sites next month and will post the results.

18.01.2022 Nest boxes are a great way to supplement breeding and roost habitat for birds and mammals in revegetation and other areas lacking natural hollows. This photo shows five near-fledged Eastern Rosella chicks in a nest box near Nhill. HLN recently installed 160 nest boxes on eight Project Hindmarsh properties, thanks to funding from the Victorian State Government through their Victorian Landcare Grants.

18.01.2022 I was surveying a Buloke woodland yesterday, one of next year's planting sites. The Elegant Spear-grass there is in full flower at the moment and shimmers in the morning sun, producing this amazing effect across the understorey. A beautiful grass, and one we have been including in our planting site species lists for the last couple of years.

13.01.2022 There are fields of yellow across parts of the Wimmera at the moment, the canola looking fantastic after recent rains. The photo shows a paddock near Jeparit, with the Wimmera River behind.

10.01.2022 Greening Australia recently launching one of the largest restoration projects in Australia’s history, planting 25 million biodiverse trees across 20,000 hectares by 2025 (that’s equivalent to one-quarter the size of Canberra!). This large-scale project will create habitat for dozens of endangered species, sequester vast quantities of carbon, and create economic opportunities for Traditional Owners and rural communities. Made possible by partners AstraZeneca, Global EverGreening Alliance, One Tree Planted and Ark2030. Read more about this amazing Greening Australia project at the following link: bit.ly/32QOxdW

07.01.2022 We have been checking out a new variety of clover being trialed by a few landholders in the region. French Serradella is a winter growing annual or short-term perennial clover which grows well on sandy soils and provides high protein forage. Being a legume it also improves soil fertility and builds soil carbon. The following photos were taken from two properties bordering the northern edge Little Desert. We are exploring the potential for this crop to improve soils more widely across the sand belt regions.

06.01.2022 The Spring 2020 (#79) issue of the Victorian Landcare magazine is now available online. The issue features articles on roadsides, rail reserves and walking trails, and includes a story about Project Hindmarsh building biolinks. You can view the magazine at the following link. https://www.landcarevic.org.au/landcare-magazine/spring-2020

05.01.2022 We had a nice drive through Little Desert National Park a few days ago. Amongst the many wildflowers in bloom was this stunning low shrub called the Blue Tinsel-lily.
