23.01.2022 Finally the nectar is starting to flow and we are starting to pull some honey off our hives. It’s been a great start to spring and a joy to see those fresh white cappings of new wax on the frames.

17.01.2022 Let me tell you a story about the birds and the bees and the ... SNAKES! Now that spring is here, and the weather is warming up there are plenty of snakes out and about. What an amazing sight to see these two Red-Bellied blake snakes in action near our home apiary. Their dance went on for more than 45 minutes (they were still going at it went I left). While Red-Bellied black snakes are not considered deadly, they are certainly highly venomous and certainly worth avoiding.... . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 13.01.2022 It's been an excellent start to the beekeeping season, which is ideal for the bees, and it has also kept us extremely busy. Between harvesting honey, trying to prevent our hives swarming and removing bees from unwanted places, I have barely had time to post any updates. A couple of weeks ago, I removed this beautiful nest from the wall of a Shelly Beach property. It was packed full of honey and was expanding fast. In proper form, the queen managed to evade capture, rig...ht to the very end. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 11.01.2022 The enemy. They are just part of beekeeping in Australia, but considering they can eat 150 bees a day, a flock of 20 can do some real damage. They are migratory and we see them in Spring and Autumn. In Spring they can be a real problem for queen breeders, not only knocking off the larger slower drones, but also a threat to the virgin queens on their mating flights. On a couple of occasions I have collected queenless swarms while observing Rainbow Bee-eaters flying nearby.

08.01.2022 Another day of spring and another swarm, this time helping Shannon Garson re-home a reproduction-swarm into a 5-frame nuc that was way too small! We are seeing much bigger swarms this season compared to last year. With decent rain leading into spring, the flora is producing more nectar. More importantly, plenty of high-protein pollen is coming into the hives, precisely what is needed for brood raising. When there is plenty of quality resources available, the queen goes in...to egg-laying overdrive. Consequently, the colony has full confidence to produce reproduction swarms. Trying to prevent hives swarming in these conditions can almost impossible. The upside is that the queen usually leaves the hive packed with brood and the population bounces back incredibly quickly. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 07.01.2022 Q. What happens if the repairs are not done correctly after the removal of a bee nest? A. Another swarm will most likely move in. Here is a great example. Look at the remains of old comb above this two-week-old nest. It was evident that a nest, about three times the size of this one, had been previously removed from this Noosa Heads property. The owner purchased the property ten years ago and did not know an early bee nest had been removed. ... Old nest sites are extremely attractive to new swarms. Therefore if the entry points are not well sealed and insulation bats are not used to fill out the cavity, reinfestation is a sure bet, even if it takes another ten years! . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 06.01.2022 Just as the finishing touches were being made to this Sunrise Beach holiday rental, a beehive was discovered, tucked away in the soffit above an outdoor shower. The queen revealed herself early in this removal process, making for a straightforward job, despite the slightly awkward positioning of the nest. 04.01.2022 By the sounds of it, the lads watching on were suitably impressed by this bee nest. It's hard to believe how quickly it had grown. While it was packed with capped brood, none had emerged yet which indicates that it was indeed less than four weeks old. I have decided this is the optimum time to remove a nest. During the first 3 to 4 weeks of a swarm moving in, the population declines through natural attrition. After that time, the first brood starts to emerge, and the popula...tion begins to skyrocket. After four weeks the comb also starts to become a lot firmer and is much easier to handle than the super-fragile virgin comb. Ultimately, this helps to speed the removal process. Thanks Toni for tracking us down and Gorman & Gray Property for arranging the safe removal of these bees. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 04.01.2022 There is no point chasing other people's swarms if you can't stop your own hives swarming. We have been spending a lot of time doing both lately. We haven't done much posting recently, not due to lack of content but, quite the opposite. It's been a pretty frenetic start to spring, and now that the nectar flows have started, it will only get busier. This swarm came from one of our hives, despite our best swarm control efforts. 02.01.2022 And, then there are the big swarms. (Our last post showed a tiny swarm). This one landed in the full sun right on the top of an annex in the Beerwah Caravan Park. Thankfully, they sought shelter in the shade on the side of the tent, making it much easier to access. When a swarm lands on the ground or a flat surface, it tends to spread out, which is why it is called a "pancake" swarm. It is often much easier to spot the queen when they aren't clustered together - like when t...hey hang in a tree. I spotted this queen within seconds, even before I was able to get the camera going. With the queen caged, it was a simple matter of scooping the majority of the bees into the box with her, and the rest followed. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified. 01.01.2022 We have had an excellent start to spring this year, and the bees are responding with some beautiful swarms. We were called to a Bokorina property this week to rescue the second swarm they had attracted with a few days. Fortunately, we were able to capture the queen before she found her way into the wall cavity and which would have required a completely different approach to remove them.... Thank you, Tony, from @eastcoastcarpetcleaningandpestcontrol East Coast Carpet Cleaning and Pest Control for calling us in to save these bees. . . . -- Reposting our content is fine, provided it is not modified.
