24.01.2022 This National Reconciliation Week, we had the honour of Professor Eleanor Bourke, a Wergaia elder and Co-Chair of Victoria’s Treaty Working Group, speaking at an all Brotherhood reconciliation meeting. Professor Bourke spoke about the Victorian Treaty process, that Aboriginal culture and respect for land are key parts of the Australian identity, the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal people and importance of truth-telling in the way forward. HIPPY Australia National Manager... Marian Pettit also spoke passionately about fostering awareness of the cultures, histories, and dispossession of our First Peoples. She emphasised the importance of truth telling, recognition of sovereignty and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights to respect, self-determination and fulfilment of their aspirations. The day also invited an opportunity to visit and reflect at the nearby Atherton Garden’s Stolen Generations Marker that was unveiled last year. We would love to hear about what you’ve done to mark this year’s National Reconciliation Week! Let us know in your comments below!

16.01.2022 HIPPY Graduations! HIPPY - Brotherhood of St Laurence's flagship program, Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters - is an in-home education and parenting program for children aged 4 to 5 from disadvantaged backgrounds, with 100 sites nationally. After the challenges of 2020, it’s important to celebrate the achievements of the children and their families participating in our HIPPY program. These graduations are an opportunity to celebrate the 1,750 graduates and... their families, as confident learners looking at a bright future, and who are ready for success. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks as our graduations roll-out. 15.01.2022 We are proud to share the amazing results coming out of years of collaboration and hard work in northern New South Wales! The HIPPY Goonellabah team, the YWCA Goonellabah Transition program, local artists, children and families have developed three brilliant Bundjalung Language Booklets as a unique Aboriginal language resource. All of the artwork, stories and photographs were created by local families and artists, including HIPPY Goonellabah children. The language (Broader Bu...ndjalung) was provided by the Aboriginal Language and Culture Nest at Goonellabah Public School. HIPPY Goonellabah Coordinator, Zoe Dodd has done an outstanding job in coordinating this project. Congratulations Zoe and the Goonellabah community!

15.01.2022 Did you know that 23% of HIPPY families speak a language other than English at home? This figure is just higher than 2016 census figures showing that 21% of all Australians use English as an additional language. Some multilingual parents or carers may be unsure whether they should be speaking English at home to support their child’s learning ‘in the outside world’, but it doesn’t have to be one language or the other! In fact, encouraging your child to learn more than one lang...uage is shown by research to have many benefits! It has been found that children who learn more than one language demonstrate enhanced cognitive development, can have improved memory and concentration, and are better at solving problems. Speaking languages shared with family members and carers is also a powerful way to help children connect with their cultural identities. Starting Blocks, developed by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority, has a few tips to share about raising a bilingual or multilingual child. https://www.startingblocks.gov.au//tips-to-raising-a-mult/

15.01.2022 HIPPY Australia embraces diversity and is committed to the values of inclusivity, equity and respect as we work together towards the empowerment of families, no matter their make up, across Australia. HIPPY Australia recently participated in Working Effectively with LGBTI People training run by Sharon Jones and Lou Carter, the Line Manager and Coordinator at HIPPY Kentish in Tasmania. Sharon is the CEO of the Kentish Regional Clinic, the HIPPY provider based in Sheffield. Th...rough the training, we reflected on how we work with gender and sexually diverse communities and how we can ensure safe and inclusive environments so that everyone feels rightfully welcome. We would like to give special thanks to Sharon for sharing her own powerful story and bringing her knowledge and experience from decades of courageous activism and advocacy to the training. We would highly recommend that you consider contacting Sharon and inquiring about what her training could offer you. You can contact Sharon through the Kentish Regional Clinic/CORES website: http://www.cores.org.au/contact

08.01.2022 It’s the second day of the HIPPY Australia Virtual Gathering, Our Voices in Action. One key focus of this year’s Gathering has been HIPPY Age 3. HIPPY Age 3 has an innovative play-based curriculum and program model that supports three-year-old children to develop a love of learning early and empowers parents and carers as their child’s first teacher. ... This year, the Brotherhood of St Laurence has been funding a demonstration rollout of HIPPY for three-year-olds in 10 HIPPY sites. This Gathering, HIPPY Coordinators Belinda (HIPPY Rockingham, WA), Tatjana (HIPPY Dandenong , VIC) and Steph (HIPPY Onkaparinga, SA joined HIPPY Australia team members Laura Romeo and Kiara Tallboy to share the positive impact HIPPY Age 3 is having in their, and the other seven, communities. The verdict is clear: Age 3 is the future! #HIPPY2020 #HIPPYAustralia

07.01.2022 What a massive week last week was. At the #HIPPY2020 Virtual Gathering we proved that, though we had to celebrate apart, the HIPPY Australia network is staying connected. Indeed, our connections with each other and other organisations in our communities are vital. A huge thank you to all of the HIPPY Coordinators and Line Managers that came together last week. What we do is all possible due to the passion and drive of our HIPPY communities: from the families we work with, to ...the Tutors and Coordinators who dedicate themselves to supporting others and shape the program to meet the needs of families, the skilled organisations that deliver and support our program. HIPPY Australia is richer for the vast diversity of network, we are not one voice but the voices of thousands of empowered parents and children in love with learning, and of communities who aspire for the best for their children. We look forward to seeing our Coordinators and Line Managers again next year for the HIPPY National Gathering 2021. #HIPPY2020 #HIPPYAustralia

06.01.2022 As part of this year's HIPPY International Conference, the directors of 11 national HIPPY networks have had the privilege of visiting Bedouin families doing HIPPY in the town of Tel as-Sabi. This week's Group Meeting was focused on child safety and involved some great craft activities. This year's conference also marks the first appearance of the newest member of the HIPPY International family: HIPPY Chile! Welcome/bienvenido HIPPY Chile!

06.01.2022 It's a challenging time, both here in Australia and overseas. HIPPY Australia would like to acknowledge the custodians of the lands on which we live, work, learn and play, and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders - past, present and future - particularly this National Reconciliation Week. This year's National Reconciliation Week theme is 'In this together', which is a powerful and meaningful reminder that we must all work together with justice, passion and kindn...ess for a world that is fair and accountable. Take care and stay safe!

06.01.2022 It's all go at this year's SNAICC national conference in Adelaide! HIPPY Coordinators and Tutors from all across Australia (7 out of 8 states and territories!) have turned out in great numbers and style to represent! It has been great to have so many people visit our HIPPY booth; we even got a visit by Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples! At the booth, we've been showcasing some of the amazing collaborations between HIPPY sites... and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, particularly our work with Budburra Books on three HIPPY storybooks. Thank you to all of our Tutors, Coordinators, Line Managers and everyone who's taken the time to pop by! SNAICC is the national peak organisation that represents the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This year's conference is around the theme Strong Identity, Strong Culture and Strong Connection: Our Mob, Our Lore, Our Country Our Way.

06.01.2022 HIPPY Australia is proud to announce that work has begun on the development of a new HIPPY Age 3 curriculum. Through the generous support of a local philanthropic foundation, HIPPY Age 3 will be implemented at HIPPY Frankston North over three years starting in 2020. The development of new curriculum materials and their implementation at Frankston North will provide us with a valuable means of advocating for funding Age 3 delivery across our network of 100 sites in the future.... The project is being led by Dr Anne Kennedy and HIPPY Australia's Kiara Tallboy (pictured front right and back left in the photo of the project team below), and will draw on the lessons learned from the successful HIPPY Inala Age 3 pilot.

05.01.2022 We’ve just been going through some of the wonderful photos and stories from sites who celebrated National HIPPY Week last week. Here’s just a few: HIPPY Rockhampton (QLD) seemed to have an amazing time sharing stories with Darumbal traditional custodians Larnie and Aunty Kristina Hatfield, dancing, craft activities and story reading. HIPPY Onkaparinga in Adelaide had an outstanding turnout at their event with a crowd of 90 sharing stories (and pizza!) and even made their own... 25 page HIPPY storybook called My Home. On the theme of making storybooks, HIPPY Fraser Coast (QLD) launched their own storybook called Wongari’s Walk! More on this in a later post... Here at HIPPY Australia, we had our very own Kiara Tallboy do a reading of the new Age 3 storybook, Is This My Home?, which she also wrote! See the video of her reading below! If any HIPPY sites out there would like us to share their HIPPY Week posts or photos of their events, please message us!

We can’t wait to see you on Thursday! #HIPPY2020 #HIPPYAustralia

01.01.2022 Always was, always will be. Happy NAIDOC week to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families out there! Having a strong sense of identity and feeling connected with and contribute to the world are important in children’s development (and are key outcomes in the Early Years Learning Framework to which HIPPY is aligned). Children who feel accepted, supported and safe in who they are grow in confidence to learn and grow. ... At HIPPY, we think it’s important that all children feel connected to and informed about the many lands we live on. Understanding our history and environment is an important place to start. Do you know the traditional custodians on whose land you live on? What have you done this week to celebrate and learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander custodianship of country?

01.01.2022 Happy HIPPY Week! My Voice is Important! This year's theme is all about the voice of the child: the importance of listening to children and understanding that they can, and should, be active participants at home and in their community. This idea is a key foundation in HIPPY. By listening to their thoughts and feelings, we show that we value their contributions and their dignity as a person. By letting them make age appropriate decisions and express themselves, we empower them... to be active and thoughtful citizens. We hope you have a lovely HIPPY Week in whatever way you are able to celebrate! We look forward to hearing about your week.
