23.01.2022 Good morning, It's been a busy few weeks of Fireplace Safety Inspections and Flue cleans. Over the last month, there were 15 flues that were completely blocked and the worrying part was that 10 of them I cleaned last year.... I put this down to the wood they are burning. Please use only Hardwoods such as maple, oak, ash, birch, the best burning woods that will give you a hotter and longer burn time. These woods have the least pitch and sap and are generally cleaner to handle and the creosotes will take longer to build up in your flue. Blockages can also be caused by old birds' nests, dead birds, leaves or general debris. If your home is surrounded by trees, leaves and other debris, such as conkers or pinecones, can fall into your flue. The more these build up, the more your flue will become blocked. Flue fires are real, as you can see just last week from this article below. For a small fee, you can keep your family safe this winter. Two weeks left of the Early Bird Special. 22.01.2022 Good morning, Unfortunately, it looks like we are all going to be home a lot more over this winter period, therefore your fireplace will be getting a bit more of a workout this season. To ensure you get the most out of your woodpile this winter, make sure your fireplace is clear of Cresotes.... Creosotes can reduce the draw of the fireplace and reduce efficiency. You will burn through your woodpile much quicker! Book you Fireplace Safety Inspection and Flue Clean now! Is your Fireplace Safe to use? This week I have cleaned over 50 flues, and 30 of them required much-needed maintenance and repairs and 18 were blocked completely! DON'T RISK YOUR FAMILIES SAFETY THIS WINTER!! Different types of wood create different amounts of creosote when burned. Pine causes a rapid build-up of creosote and should be avoided as a regular source of wood. Also when getting someone to clean your flue, make sure they are not just doing it from the inside of your fireplace. A real flue cleaner will get on your roof remove the rain head and clean from the top and then go inside and take off your baffle plate and clean from the bottom as well. 17.01.2022 Is your Fireplace Safe to use? This week I have cleaned over 30 flues, and 17 of them required much needed maintenance and repairs and 14 were blocked completely!... Do you know whats happening on your roof! DON'T RISK YOUR FAMILIES SAFETY THIS WINTER!! Why Should I get my Flue Cleaned? The job of the flue cleaner is to remove soot, blockages and built-up creosote from your flue liner, firebox, smoke chamber and damper. This cleaning will help create a safer operation of your system during the heating system. It takes only a small accumulation of creosote glazing to create the potential for a flue fire. Creosote is a highly flammable substance that builds up inside your flue or liner as a result of burning wood. The rate of accumulation can be higher if you practise poor burning practices or have a burning appliance or stove that is not working well. 04.01.2022 An important message about Fire Place and Wood Fired Heater Safety in your home. Many people in our community use fireplaces or wood heaters/stoves for their pr...imary heating source. Unfortunately many are unaware of the fire risks associated with this type heating. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently. Our Brigade encourages residents to adopt relevant fire safety steps to keep those home fires safely burning. We urge everyone to keep Fireplaces and Wood Heater/Stoves clean. This can be easily achieved by actively utilising the following advice. Inspect and Clean your chimney annually. Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorations and flammable materials. Always use a metal mesh screen with open fire-places. Use fire resistant materials on walls around your fireplace and wood stoves. Safely burn fuels Never use flammable liquids to start a fire. Use only seasoned (old and dry) hardwood. Soft, moist wood accelerates creosote build-up. Never burn cardboard boxes or rubbish in your heater or fireplace. When building a fire, place logs at the rear of the firebox to reduce risk of rolling out. Never leave a fire in an open fireplace unattended. Extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the house. Safely dispose of Ash-pan debris. When emptying the fire box, place ashes in a strong metal container, take outside and fill the container with water to completely extinguish the embers. Never throw ash under trees or into grassy areas. Embers can easily become a fire, with just a little bit of wind and dry fuel, like grass and leaves.
