23.01.2022 What do you do when you have invested in around 400 plants in the last 3 years to find that with the water restrictions the plants are struggling to survive. Who has the time to water them all with a watering can. Answer: invest in a grey water reuse system. Having a 2 storey house with the drain pipe from the en-suite shower very accessible I managed to put a 3 way valve on it so I can divert the water to a storage tank (large olive tub in this case bought for $30). Attach... a small positive pressure pump to the tank that I can hook a hose up to and attach another overflow pipe to the top and away we go. Down side is that you cannot store grey water for more than 24hrs so every night I need to water the garden. Felt a bit silly in the rain on Sunday watering the garden. The advantage of the 3 way valve is that I can change the flow back to the sewer for prolonged rain periods. Very happy with the outcome. See more

22.01.2022 I spent Monday and some of my day today making this little bridge for one of my clients. The old one that the client used to get the lawn mower across the drain had a handrail that was more for looks than holding onto and had rotted at all the joints. The client had made it himself when he was younger and totally mobile. Well time has treated his body the same as the old handrail and he is not very mobile now but still loves his beautiful garden but has not been able to cross the drain safely lately. I made the bridge out of treated pine and the handrail and posts out of gal tube. This means that it is strong enough to take his full weight. The curved handrail just looks great in the setting which just goes to show that accessible things do not need to look ugly. Happy client and happy Hubby. It was a lot of fun.

20.01.2022 Merry Christmas

20.01.2022 Interesting job over the last couple of days putting in handrails for one of my clients so that he can get down to his pool. The 1st day I cored and concreted in the steel posts. After having a closer look the client requested that we change the position of 3 of the posts so that he could lean on both rails at the same time. This is a very important part of what we do as the rails are being custom build for his needs and I was only too happy to change the design to suit. Hopefully the rain will go away tomorrow so that I cane concrete the last posts in and finish off. You will see that the rails are made from Tassie Oak dowel so that it is comfortable to grip and not get too hot to hold as the client once started on his journey up or down will not be able to release his grip on the rails until he has reached a seat or his walking frame.

20.01.2022 Here we are at the end of day 12 of the complete unit refurbishment. Today I completed the grouting of the splash back tiles. It was a long day yesterday with Mark and myself laying the splash back tiles. It is interesting laying 300 x 75 tiles that have no straight edges and varying thicknesses. I also laid the click balance timber look vinyl planks to the kitchen floor. This is the first time I have used this product and I am impressed at the quality and feel. And it looks... like real timber too. Ryan from RVZ Electrical completed his contracted works which included new power circuits for the new cook top, power points for the kitchen and an essential upgrade of the units switchboard to include circuit breakers and RCD protection. A must for any old unit. Sam from Fantasia Painting completed the full painting of the unit including walls, ceilings, door jambs and doors. It is amazing how changing the walls from a light yellow to Antique White USA and the doors to white make the unit so much brighter. Heath came in last week and sprayed the bath ant the wall tiles in the bathroom. The bathroom now sparkles. We have also built a new built in wardrobe to the main bedroom. See more

19.01.2022 Spent a great afternoon with dad today. Called around at 1:30 and mum made us lunch. Then dad and I took a road trip to Hare & Forbes. Purchased dad a bandsaw & wheel set and back to his place to put it together. My brother came out and gave us a hand. Mum kept coming out and updating the cricket score and plying us with ginger beer. It wheeled in perfectly at the end of his bench. Mission accomplished. Lots of unsuspecting people will be getting elephants, leopards, ducks, monkeys, jewellery boxes and more. Some of which you can see hanging on the wall.

18.01.2022 Some jobs are bigger than others but they are all as important to our customers as each other. I have just finished concreting in this beautiful spotted gum and cast iron seat in the gardens of a group of town houses. Weather it is the grand parents, the parents or the grand children taking the time to sit and appreciate the fragrances, the sounds or the tranquility of the garden or just a little bit of quiet time and reflection this seat welcomes all.

17.01.2022 Mondays demolition job. Kitchen removal ready for the new kitchen

17.01.2022 Thinking outside the square. One of my clients has recently moved out of their family home to a more user friendly 2 bedroom unit for their post 60 years. This is a huge down size and although they have culled a huge amount of furniture and belongings they are still struggling for space. Solution: Add another bit of furniture to the bedroom in the form of IKEA shoe storage. We built 3 units and fitted them along the bedroom wall under the TV. ... The units are only 170mm deep so visually they dont impact on the size of the room at all. All of the shoes are out of the wardrobe, utilities cupboard and any other space they could find. Giving them more storage in these places. Theres a nice little shelf to display a few ornaments or family photos etc A great solution See more

16.01.2022 Happy Christmas in July 2020

16.01.2022 Christmas lights can be a lot of fun. Contact your local Hire A Hubby if you need a hand to set them up.

15.01.2022 Asked to make a bespoke 50th birthday present. Amazing what you can do with a sink hole from a beach bench top. Cut it to size, curve the ends for looks, route some hand grips in, bullnose the edges then use a poker to burn scrabble pieces into the timber with the family names. A discrete Happy 50th in the corner. Finish off with a couple of coats of Orange oil and it's ready to party.

15.01.2022 What do you do when you have unsightly rubbish bins in your carport on view to anyone walking past your house? Thats easy just ask me to design and build an enclosure or screen for them. Last night I sketched this one up on the computer and today we built it. It was designed to match the existing lattice screens around the carport and over time it will get the patina to blend in. The 2 door slide to get the bins in and out

14.01.2022 Set up in the clients driveway cutting skirting to go around the base of a vanity. With the addition of a 36v Makita drop saw to the tool box we are very close to being self sufficient. The new slide out drawers on the side of the van make a sturdy workbench for this type of work.

14.01.2022 Who has the under sink and corner cupboard blues. We have the solution and can make you feel like the Australian Women's 7's Olympic Team. Go for gold with Hire A Hubby Pymble.

13.01.2022 Some jobs just have more benifits

12.01.2022 Great little job today hanging motivational posters along the corridors of one of my clients. I suggested rather than hanging them on the wall and putting multiple holes in the walls we try putting up a picture rail system where they can change the posters whenever they want and it does not matter what size or shape the posters are. You be the judge I think it looks great.

10.01.2022 Nice little job today making a bespoke garden shed to snugly fit into the courtyard of a town house.

09.01.2022 My daughter Abby asked if I could put some of my skills to good use and build her a new wardrobe. The old one had hinged doors which took up most of the spare space in the room and had a useless nook at the end which was pointless. So the wardrobe is now 1/3 bigger in length, has mirrored sliding doors, has heaps more drawers, shelves and hanging space. All built to Abby's specification. Yes we did ask her what she wanted and designed it the way she wanted. The mirror now ...shows off what is in her dolls house without getting on the floor. The dolls house bed was a previous project 6 years ago. The next step in a few weeks is to complete the cornice that is missing and paint the bedroom. Abby came down to Johns Paints at Hornsby and spent 1/2 hr pulling out colour samples and spreading them all over the table before coming up with her feature wall colour as well as the main wall colour. At Hire A Hubby Pymble it does not matter who the client is, we will listen to their ideas, help them with their design and complete the project so that everyone is happy. See more

09.01.2022 You have to love when you are doing a kitchen in a unit and the client says we have a balcony for you to do your cutting.

08.01.2022 Spent some quality time working with Jackson today building his bed head. Jackson sketched up a concept and we set about bringing it to life.

08.01.2022 Best part of being up early

06.01.2022 Late night last night putting up a Christmas tree and Christmas lights for the teenage daughter of one of my clients

04.01.2022 Nice little job yesterday. Replacing the rotten stairs on this slide at a child care centre. Although I usually don't work Saturdays it was just so much easier without a bunch of kids asking every minute " what are you doing". I could also set up the saw close to the job so it was a lot more efficient. I used prefab galvanised stringers (supports) for the durability as this is the second time the stairs have had to be replaced due to the timber rotting. The treads are treated pine and I have left a 10mm gap all around them so hopefully they will not rot as quickly with a bit of air flow around them.

02.01.2022 What do you do when you have a limited budget and your house only have 1 living area? That easy, build a deck out the back so you have an outside living area.

01.01.2022 Great little job extending a shed in the back yard. We have made it look like a little cottage with a veranda out the front so the client can work out in the open but not be under the sun. The 10 light double doors lets him open the shed right up and wheel his bench saw out on the veranda for use. They also enhance the look when looking at the shed from the house. The real boss of the house says it will keep her husband happy and she is pleased that the shed is now not an eye sore when looking out at her back yard. Sounds like a win win to me

01.01.2022 Despite the pokey little Veranda that we had to do our cutting in we managed to get our part of the kitchen done. The stone benchtop and the glass splashback have been ordered. The electrician will be in next week to re-locate the electrical switchboard into the cupboard above the fridge. .The client sister is coming for a holiday and doesn't know yet but will be painting the kitchen. This kitchen has been a in-house design Kaboodle kitchen from Bunnings. Kathryn did a great job scoping the kitchen to the clients requirements. The client is really pleased with the way his kitchen has turned out.
