25.01.2022 RESTRUCTURE We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the business remains healthy and well positioned to succeed in the current business environment. Part of this included a thorough review of all aspects of the business by specialist industry business coaches to identify challenges and make recommendations to assist us in the management of the business. . This required some candid conversations and internal restructuring in order for the business to forge ahead. W...e realised that some elements of our current structure would not allow us to continue to provide the level of service excellence that we delight in providing to you and that, in operating as a family owned and operated small business, we had not given adequate consideration to important areas of our business. . As a result of the review and ongoing mentoring we are excited to implement changes within this season. We do understand that some of the much needed changes will directly affect some of our much loved clients who have been with us for so many years. We are incredibly grateful for your support as we’ve built the business and do hope that we get to make you look and feel fabulous for many years to come. . The beauty of the entrepreneurial spirit is the ability to do something on your own terms, building your own vision and stretching yourself to be successful. .... Two key lessons I've learnt from listening and gleening as well as being affected by businesses is that firstly, if you're not good with money, you either need to work on it fast, seek accountability, because if your not disciplined with your finances you can lose it all. . Secondly, if you don't like confronting issues or a people pleaser, others will control the outcome of your business and again regardless of all the work you put in, you can lose it all. . If you want to be in with a chance at least learn to action these areas: - discipline yourself with your finances. For every good day there is seven rainny days. - deal with issues. Don't run from your people. 15.01.2022 BRAVE Have you ever asked your parents why they named you the name that you are? You’ll hear some say you were named after your grandparent, a close friend, an aunty, someone famous or influential, or even just because they liked the name. Why then did we name our son Brave? Well like most things we do we intentionally, we felt that with both Willow and Brave the name they were to carry with them for the entirety of their lives needed to carry significance both symbolically a...nd prophetically. For example, Brave symbolises words like courage, no fear or boldness in spite of imminent danger. Willow symbolised the ability to grow and nourish wherever planted. Although these are only words it also represents how we would speak prophetically over them. A person’s identity plays a significant role in who they are becoming and for us, speaking words of empowerment helps to build resilience in our children. Secondly, it also provides a foundation for them to continually speak life into those around them as we have role modelled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, (Proverbs 18:21).

10.01.2022 Pain & Gain ‘Years ago I asked the group of leaders what they didn't like about me or my leadership style. You may ask why would you ask something like that? I felt it was important to firstly, trust that I could handle criticism and secondly, show them growth also comes by knowing your blind spots. That is what others see that you don't see about yourself also known as the johari window model. ... As we went around the room, each leader verbalized something they didn't like about myself or my leadership style. At the duration of the meeting I thanked each leader for being able to verbalize their concerns with the way I do things. Personal growth can be the equivalent to physical conditioning. In order for one to become better conditioned, the body has to go through the pain of breaking itself down until it strengthens itself as the changes occur for greater capacity. This is no different to personal or professional development. 05.01.2022 TOXICITY Eyes swollen a sign of weariness, appearance unkept, her body language spelt out the word BROKEN. She sat down, spoke gently, gazing downwardly her story unfolds. . Now in her early twenties having lost custody of her kids, a biproduct of addiction and unhealthy choices. .... We begin the discussion around education and possible employment options. She reflects on a time where her grades were good and how previously she did well in school. The question is asked, what changed? . She then goes on to share that not long after early school success, where upon meeting a group of kids through school how quickly it went from skipping school, to experimenting in substances. This continued to escalate to years of addiction and loss of family connection. . Toxic friendships + unhealthy choices = long term pain and disconnection. These were the words echoed by Trey’s dad Furious Styles, in the 1991 hit in the above title. .... Last week Barber Dave spoke of growing up fatherless during his formative years. The anger and pain suffered at not having a dad around to provide guidance, love and support. The impact of fatherlessness shaped years of antisocial behaviour, substance misuse and criminal activity which resulted in being expelled from high school in grade 9 to attending four more high schools in 5 years. . Barber Dave’s story could have been one of incarceration if not for his Uncle Vanu taking him in to his heart and home. Through his act of love, acceptance and forgiveness, Dave was able to turn his life around. . Did you know before Dave became a barber, he spent 15 years working in the community service sector working with marginalised people groups. . Why? To support those without a voice to speak on their behalf, to provide love, acceptance and forgiveness. There are thousands of young people today crying out for father figures to be present in their lives. 01.01.2022 Hand in hand 2020 was a challenging year for us as a business and equally as a family. When you own and operate a business you are continually under the pump to ensure it’s long term viability and 2020 was no exception. Fortunately, for us we have been able to weather the storm and although we are still in the midst of the current challenge, we have used our greatest strength, communication. ... Hand in hand we have spent countless hours talking through, strategising, talking some more, implementing, more talking, restructuring, some more talking, making changes. Being a husband and wife team around each other at the salon and home 24hrs a day 7 days a week, can also be for some quite a difficult undertaking and we too will readily admit it isn’t always easy. However, a key that has worked for us throughout our relationship is our ethos of resolving conflict as early and as often as possible. This is important to ensure we do not build up an account of resentment and hurt towards the other person. That way in the middle of disagreement there is no historical baggage to go into to use as ammunition against the other party.
