08.01.2022 Some thoughts on Sport and HEMA I really believe that sport should be at the core of all martial arts training. Training should have safety rules that prevent...s injury. People who train deadly combative techniques without the ability to use it in a safe sporting context do not have the ability to use distance, timing, or understand how to set up the skills they practice. Easier to teach a boxer how to eye poke, or a grappler a risky submission than to spend time practicing them without that ability. Competition drives people to face new skills and develop the art. Look at how beautifully refined Muay Thai and Boxing have become through competition. Compare the way fighters move today compared to 50 years ago. Yes it is artifical. Yes eye pokes, headbutts, bare knuckles and small joint breaks change the game. But try to hit a pro boxer. The defensive movement alone will make that impossible for someone who doesn't train boxing. When people train their own martial arts in isolated pockets, they never integrate all of that knowledge. They aren't challenged. They're satisfied by being the best in their club, the best in their community, and it stagnates. You can see that happening when someone brings new weapons to the fight- Thai Kicks, Head movement, submissions, you name it. With the ability to integrate all of this and a basis in competitive sport, we see a return to traditional techniques being used by people who can face whatever is thrown at them and have the ability to thrive in competitive environments. Historical fencing always has a sporting element to it. It should. From that base you can add the other elements- use in military, the duel, theater and in self defense. It is much easier to integrate those other aspects into people with strong competitive backgrounds. If the sport takes over too much then it becomes removed from it's roots and is no longer authentic. I think instead of pushing back against the idea of HEMA or Historical Fencing being in contrast to sport fencing, a better approach is to respond by saying "Yes, it is a sport. And for duelling, the battlefield, gladiatorial arenas, self defense and for theater!".
