22.01.2022 ON THIS DAY... The Great Fire of Winbourne, Mulgoa : 100 years ago. On the fateful day of 9th August 1920, a dust storm raged and guests were barricaded inside the guesthouse where several open fireplaces kept them warm. Later that day, a neighbour, Billy Baines, saw smoke billowing from the roof and telephoned the postmistress, Miss Ashby, who then relayed the message by telephone to the proprietors Thomas & Elsie Campbell. By then the fire had spread so far that there w...as no time for the Campbell’s to rescue much furniture as the old timber shingles (under the new tin roof) had caught fire. Water was sprayed onto the roof, however it ran off without any effect on the fire and the beautiful mansion was gutted. The event was extensively reported the next day in the Sydney Morning Herald and a diary entry by James Hewitt (owner) for 11 August 1920 reads Never while God leaves me alive will I forget the dreadful windy days and the dreadful calamity that befell good old Winbourne. It’s hard but things happen sometimes for the best. The mansion was uninsured and the damage so great that rebuilding would have been totally unviable. It was decided to renovate the existing Stables building into accommodation, and the popularity of the guesthouse did not diminish after the destruction of the old mansion ( which had since become a tourist attraction in its own right). With the arrival of the Second World War, business declined and after the war, when motor cars were in abundance, holidaymakers were looking farther afield to interstate destinations and resorts by the sea meaning business did not recover, and the greatest chapter of Mulgoa’s history came to an end in the late 1950’s.

08.01.2022 Our first chalk paint workshop run by Sue from Second Time Round. Leanne and I were inspired by yesterday’s wedding and created a lovely prop (comes in handy for hiding fire hose reels in photos) made from some old timber in a Winbourne paddock. Great fun day. 02.01.2022 Many improvements have been happening at Winbourne during these quiet times. Next up is fixing the old roof for the Edmund Rice Room (dating back to mid 1800s and once used as a winery in the Cox family era, then later becoming the grand ballroom during the early 1900s Guesthouse era). Preserving our heritage one step at a time
