23.01.2022 This abandoned truck at Woolsthorpe would have many stories about miles traveled and the drivers. Image the dogs, women, children and other passengers that would have possibly been in the cabin at some stage. How many bottles of beer would have been consumed after a long hot day? Thoughts please?

22.01.2022 Unveiling the War Memorial World War 1 The war memorial was unveiled by Marshal Johnson in 1921. Councillor William C. Lindsay addresses the gathering. Of note is the garden around the cenotaph. It is a seven point star commemorating the Woolsthorpe soldiers who died. Robert Davidson, John Gardiner, John Latta, Clarence Brown, George Moore, William Richardson and Albert Roberts. The star garden and the avenue of honour which lined Manifold Street has been removed. The WDHS have spoken of commemorating these soldiers in some way. It is hoped that some movement on this could occur in the near future. We should never forget the sacrifice that so many offered and never came home to Woolsthorpe and their loved ones.

19.01.2022 I would like to introduce you to Miss Greene from a photo taken in 1905. It is unsure of her first name and is suggested as Eva. Miss Greene was the daughter of Joseph Greene and Sarah Elizabeth Maunder-Mitchem residents of Woolsthorpe. The history society would appreciate any further information.

18.01.2022 Minjah School number 4829 opened in May 1958 with 29 pupils. Initially the school had poor facilities. After sometime the local community provided many improv...ements. In 1970 the enrollments fell to 7. The Minjah School closed at the end of the 1970 school year. The school site is still visible along with the concrete entrance gates. It is now on private property and not accessible. If you have any photos or recollections please let us know as we aim to improve our history knowledge. See more

16.01.2022 WDHS had the fortunate opportunity to video interview two past Woolthorpians last Saturday - Mrs. Joan Johnson and Mr. Keith Keilar. For over an hour and a half we asked about their lives and in particular when in Woolsthorpe. It was so enlightening to hear their stories and achievements. A big thank you to Robyn and Ros for their help in bringing them for the interview. WDHS have recognised the need to record these histories of those who have memories of Woolsthorpe. So if you have a relative or partner who would like to contribute we would be grateful. WDHS AGM on the 2 February 2019 at 10am in the Woolsthorpe Hall. Please come along if you have an interest in what we do and plan to do

16.01.2022 The Woolsthorpe Mechanics Institute Hall contains the honour board of those from Woolsthorpe who went to represent their country in various wars. There are two boards containing the names of the war service persons. The 1914-1918 board lists the World War 1 and the Vietnam Veterans. Those with an asterix (*) before the name indicate that they died in World War 1. Seven WW1 soldiers died on the Western Front. The 1939-1945 board lists the World War 2 and Korean War veterans. Fortunately no soldiers died in these wars. Listed is Maria Davidson who was a nurse in WW2.

15.01.2022 ANZAC Day. These photos are from our Woolsthorpe historical collection. It shows the men that left their families to fight in the first world war. As can be seen they were in battle fatigues and the second photo shows desert attire. These men returned with possibly some horrific experiences which we can only imagine. Collected by Mary Bennett our esteemed researcher.

15.01.2022 Just adding another photo from our past. Trees were planted along Manifold Street to commemorate soldiers from the First world War. It is gone now as road widening occurred.

15.01.2022 Some history of the Woolsthorpe Manifold Street Bridge. It was constructed as a double arch bridge in the 1854. A toll-gate operated in the 1860s. The bridge was washed away in the 1946 floods. Woolsthorpe was isolated for sometime as six other bridges were washed away including Cassadys bridge. The current bridge was installed in the early 1950s. One photo below shows the remnants of the original bluestone bridge under the new bridge.

11.01.2022 Quamby homestead is located on the Warrnambool-Caramut Road north of Woolsthorpe. It is currently a bed and breakfast as well as a fully functioning event destination. The original inhabitants were Mr Mussle, Brown and Wickham in 1845. This was taken over by George Yule in 1851. A Mr Paul de Castella eventually owned Quamby for a few months after pruchase. Then William and Grace (Carmichael) Lindsay purchased and established the homestead in 1893. The Union as added and therefore totalled 25,000 Acres. We hold lots of information and would be appreciative for any further information.

10.01.2022 There still remains a number of these mile markers on Caramut and Hexham Roads. During WWII most if not all were buried to prevent the Japanese knowing distance measurements. Fortunately concerned people have gone to the trouble of restoring them by digging them up.

10.01.2022 Once again I photographed this abandoned home in Koroit. It is situated at 130 Koroit -Woolsthorpe Road. I never enter a private property without an invitation for photographs to be taken. Any information would be appreciated.

09.01.2022 Hi Woolshorpians. Dam hot. This photo is of the basalt bases in Keilor Road Minjah. I was told sometime ago that sheathe cut hay was placed on these for storage. The video is by an ameatur and should improve over time. I would truly appreciate any information relating to this storage please.

05.01.2022 The Country Womens Association in Woolsthorpe was formed in 1933. Mrs G J Officer and Mrs Jack (Annie Richardson nee Fitzgerald) were two of the founding members. At the annual meeting of 1948 the elected officers-bearers were: Miss Jones, Mrs. Officer, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Woolcock and Mrs. Roache. Below is a picture of the CWA drama show. The years were 1982-83. The CWA has continued through the years with a strong membership to this day. They encourage all women in the area to engage with others. It is not just about cooking amazing cakes and scones. It is also about friendship and inclusion. A very proud institution and supporter of the Woolsthorpe community.

05.01.2022 The Woolsthorpe Mechanical Institute Hall has seen many functions and still remains a vital part of our community. This photo was of a ball shown in front of the original stage in 1938. See anyone you have knowledge of please?

04.01.2022 The National Hotel in Woolsthorpe has been a public house since 1869. James Beggs was the first licensee of the hotel according to local researchers. Offering more intrigue this is the webpage - http://publocation.com.au//v/woolsthorpe/woolsthorpe-hotel lists Mrs E Beggs in 1866 as the first licensee. So it is contentious as to the first licensees. Any help with information would be appreciated. The current licensee is John Bowd (JTB) Publican and wife Di (Lady Di). There is a very relaxing beer garden at the rear of the hotel. Well worth a visit.

03.01.2022 The pine tree located on the corner of Manifold and Nicholson Streets is from the Gallipoli Peninsula. A cone was brought back by an unknown WW1 soldier and planted. It has been established by the Royal Botanical Gardens that it is a Pinus Halepensis Aleppo Pine. These pines grew on the Gallipoli Peninsula as did the "Lone Pine." Woolsthorpe History are attempting to have this tree recognised and information pertaining to it presented at the tree.

03.01.2022 A trip to the pool in a Warrnambool Bus Lines Coach. The two children are from the Woolsthorpe Primary School and their names are not known. Additionally we dont know the date of the photograph. Fashions and the black and white photo may provide a clue. It is worth noting the park brake in-front of the coach wheel. Any help with any information would be appreciated.

03.01.2022 I travel around the district and photograph buildings and events. Koroit, Hawkesdale and others near Woolsthorpe.

01.01.2022 The Caramut Football Club in 1952 as runners up in the Port Fairy Football League. A great photo as it lists the players. K. Keilar and K. Keilor are of interest to me as I worked back in the late 70s with a Ken Keilar or Keilor at Ryans Removals. Ken played golf at the Caramut course and he commented as to the putting green being sand. If anyone could help in identifying which Ken it was would be appreciated. I learnt so much and had good times with Ken as he was a good bloke.
