19.01.2022 #InternationalNursesDay2020 A salute to nursing staff the world over; past, present, and future. Thankyou. From my Great Aunt Beryl, who nursed the first ANZACs, to our current experience with the outstanding nurses of Intensive Care - the compassion, dedication, and in some cases - sacrifice, of nursing staff is something we should all take a moment to acknowledge & remember, now more so than ever.... Here's a poem I wrote for our ICU Nurses. #HappyInternationalNursesDay Navigators .... Imagine if you will, Each ICU bedspace is A Lifeboat. Small Well-equipped Adequately provisioned. A safe capsule for the journey each Passenger embarks upon abandoning the ship of Life as they knew it. But They are not adrift in an unknown sea. They are not alone on their journey. Each lifeboat is also equipped with A Navigator. Superbly trained. Dedicated Committed and Focused to the task of guiding that Lifeboat. And guarding that Passenger. Until Journey's End. And The Navigator is not alone. Their Lifeboat is part of a Fleet. An Armada of Lifeboats. Tossing and Turning in slightly Different Directions but Heading Steadily Towards Shore. It is still not an easy task to Navigate the voyage of a small Lifeboat with such precious fragile cargo. Sometimes The Way is Charted. Sometimes Those who went before have left clear instructions. A map. A guide to the passage. Other times Navigator & Passenger embark with little knowledge of how the Journey will end Or what they might encounter during the Voyage. But Through Wild Winds, Heavy Waves, Dead Calms, In the silence of The Blackest Night, In the howling of The Fiercest Storm, The Navigator calmly holds the Lifeboat on course and keeps watch through the long hours until dawn.

18.01.2022 Dear friends and supporters, Between COVID-19 restrictions, and a family member being hospitalized after a truck accident, we have made the difficult decision t...o reschedule our Markets with Music to early 2021. Our wonderful team is keen to have something to work towards for next year! Once we have a definite date I will get more info onto Facebook, but for now we are looking at Feb or March. Meanwhile, remember you can still support the amazing Artisans & Makers by liking their FB pages, looking at websites, going to other markets, and buying their work online! Thankyou all for your support of Kilburnie's events - stay safe, stay healthy, may the rest of 2020 be kind to us all, and bring on 2021! xxx Here's some gorgeous stuff from Equine Art-Lian Meaney, Fig Tree Furniture Co. and Free Spirit Celebrations See more

18.01.2022 Tour Kilburnie with Heather! c.1997 (Sound quality is a bit iffy, but once you get past the first few minutes with "the next-door canine chorus" things do improve! )... A "blast from the past" on Kilburnie's YouTube this week: Heather takes a tour through the Homestead and surrounds way back in 1997. Complete with some barking dogs, lots of green grass (it rained that year), and the Homestead looking a bit different to how it appears now, 23 years later! This was originally filmed by Gladstone Regional Gallery for the Ruby Campbell exhibition that year, so many thanks to them for capturing this snapshot of Kilburnie! (Once again thanks to Len & Allan for digital remastering & music c.2019!)

18.01.2022 Oooooh I love this! A new special handpainted card series being developed by the Amazing Lian! This one is mine, and I am lucky to score it as they are getting snapped up very quickly.

17.01.2022 Another video on Kilburnie's Channel Huuuuge Thanks again to Len for his skill with editing , and to Allan for all of the music on this A few of you have probably seen this one, as we show it regularly at our Open Days, but it is a good introduction to the history of Kilburnie, so it's on YouTube now!... Meanwhile, I am prepping to upload some videos featuring Heather recounting more history See more

17.01.2022 Hello wonderful Kilburnie supporters! I am gradually getting back on track with some of our projects, including the "final purpose" of the Past/Present photo series Here are Ruby Campbell and longtime friend Winnifred Fowles, juxtaposed with the more recent Classic Car Club visitors to Kilburnie! Not sure what Win's car is (I am guessing it's a Holden?) so feel free to enlighten me...

16.01.2022 A new video on our Channel to share the story of Beryl Campbell and her nursing service during World War I

15.01.2022 "Crumb Crow" Pastel pencil on paper by Lian Meaney. My current "home away from home" is also home to a pair of very sleek shiny BIG crows (or maybe they are ravens )... Either way they are extremely unfazed by paparazzi such as myself taking loads of photos so that I can commission some "crow art" from Lian - and I must say I am very impressed with the table manners of these Corvids - they will eat from my hand but are very polite about it!

15.01.2022 Huge thanks to my offsider, Margaret, who was able to attend the Small Museums Workshop today since I couldn't be there! Thanks also to Shanna from BSRAG (at left) and Christine, Lisa & Leisha (Museums & Galleries Qld) the team responsible for all the hard work running the workshop Looking forward to putting all your new learnings to use in our archive room Margs hehehe!

15.01.2022 Blast from the Past today; (instead of Maker's Monday) - a friend reminded me that this time 3 years ago we were busy getting Kilburnie ready for our first-ever Open Day! How time has flown over the last four years! https://m.facebook.com/events/424338301244821?view=permalink&id=452110185134299

08.01.2022 Many thanks to local Gladstone Region artist, Katrina Elliott for organising an online exhibition for the International Year of the Nurse & Midwife! Beryl Campbell is one of the nurses featured. The exhibition runs until the end of 2020, so please feel free to nominate other nurses and midwives as it is open to all!!

07.01.2022 Yesterday we had a very special visit from Marianne Taylor @thehousedetective who researched Kilburnie's history for our Conservation Management Plan. I had promised Marianne a tour of Kilburnie one day, and although I couldn't be there in person, thankfully Heather (mum) was able to take time to show our VIP visitors around Heather is definitely the best tourguide, and so I think our next youtube video needs to be some of her recollections and stories of the Good Old D...ays For anyone interested in Qld History I can recommend The House Detective's FB page https://www.facebook.com/housedetectiveresearch/ See more

03.01.2022 Hello Friends A family medical emergency has catapulted our lives out of the normal groove, and it is difficult to post anything on Kilburnie's media at the moment. Please bear with us as we negotiate this rollercoaster I have been calling on all the resilience and nursing prowess of my ancestors, and taking strength from the kindness of wonderful people. (Also, I have sometimes resorted to writing poetry...) Perfume ...... The ICU has a subtle scent an aroma all of its own. Not unpleasant Not pungent Not the smell of sickness Not even the tang of disinfectant can describe the Perfume of an ICU... I realised this on my first night. Returning to the outside world with all the smells of normality. That alien scent I could discern was Me. My hair My clothes And after a few days of visits My skin All gently perfumed with Signature ICU. It is almost a comforting perfume Almost The scent of suspended time. The scent of suspended pain. All mundane worries are not relevant In an ICU It is the perfume of Life rendered down to the barest essentials. Without the material trims of the outside world. It is the Perfume of Compassion and Technology blended with Hope. Image: Australian Army Hospital, Singapore, WWII (Sheila Daley collection)

02.01.2022 #NRW2020 We acknowledge and extend respect to Australia's First Peoples; Aboriginals & Torres Strait Islanders, as the Custodians of the Land, and to Elders of the local Gangulu People, past, present and emerging. Many of the town names in the Banana Shire come from local Gangulu and Iman words: Thangool - possum... Biloela - white cockatoo Jambin - echidna Goovigen - box tree Wowan - scrub turkey Dululu - soft Baralaba - land of the blue mountain The name Taroom is thought to derive from ‘tarum’, meaning pomegranate in the language of the local Iman people. (If anyone knows of any other interesting local indigenous placename origins, please comment!) See more

02.01.2022 Mackay Canelands Artist Collective is hosting fantastic School Holiday Art Workshops with the amazing Lian Meaney

01.01.2022 #ruralwomensday2020 Here are some beautiful reflections on Kilburnie's legacy of #ruralwomen from my artist friend @lianmeaney ... "This place may have been built by a man, but it is the women who inhabit this place..all weekend I’ve been surrounded by a strong feminine presence , in body and in spirit..... We gathered here as artists, as friends, and shared stories and ink, laughter and tears..listened, connected, encouraged and supported each other.. And..Amidst all this creativity, the historic rooms of the homestead were opened and the stories flowed out...paintings, books, artifacts, the life of a remote station suspended in beauty without pretence, and I realised something quite profound, I was standing amidst the life force of 5 generations of Kilburnie women.. Each with their own unique strength, courage and resilience ...each with their own amazing story..." #internationalruralwomensday #graziher #countrywomen #womencandoanything #legacy #familylegacy #sandstonewonders #outbackqueensland #womenontheland #pioneeringwomen

01.01.2022 Thankyou Artist Friends! While organising various jobs that lovely people have offered to do for us during hubby's hospital stay, I decided that there should be suitable thankyou gifts for such activities... and so my Artist friends have furnished us with a beautiful selection of artworks & cards to gift Equine Art-Lian Meaney https://www.facebook.com/gwenevettsart/... https://www.facebook.com/inkyponyart/ I also get the occasional break from my hospital vigil to read, and found an interesting and very relevant article about the impact of COVID-19 on the Australian Arts sector. Now, more than ever is a great time to support local artists and makers, and to remember that every time we listen to a song, or open a magazine or E-book, we are partaking of the Arts and that life would be awfully dull without our creative industries! "The arts are the gym our imaginations attend to invent our futures. They are the bank account we use to store creative capital." https://www.theaustralian.com.au//c75c5ef61198863f7b08ba1b
