16.01.2022 Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service: There’s been a second detection of traces of COVID-19 in sewage at the Cairns North Wastewater Treatment Plant and a new detection at Cairns South Wastewater Treatment Plant. These samples were taken on 24-25 November 2020. This follows the detection of traces of COVID-19 in the wastewater from northern Cairns on 17 November 2020. These surveillance tests are extremely sensitive and can pick up tiny pieces of the genetic m...aterial of the virus. While unlikely, we cannot rule out the detection is from an active COVID-19 case or a recovered case. We are therefore encouraging people to get tested immediately if they are unwell. Anyone with any symptoms of COVID-19, no matter how mild, should get tested. Symptoms include: fever (37.5 degrees or more), cough, breathing difficulties, sore throat, loss of smell or taste, runny nose, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. There is a drive-through testing clinic at 43 Aumuller St, Cairns and a walk-in Testing Clinic at Cairns Hospital. Phone 4226 4781 for an appointment at either clinic. (Please leave a message if the line is busy and we will call you back.) www.covid19.qld.gov.au 13 46 25 84
