24.01.2022 Colin Hughes, a 55-year-old Brit who has severe muscular dystrophy a muscle-wasting disease which leaves him effectively quadriplegic, unable to use either arms or legs Hughes said that while smart home tech is about convenience for most people, for him it’s the difference between being able to do things for himself and not. "I’m fortunate to live in this digital voice driven era. It’s opened up so many opportunities for me that I would not otherwise have had. Every day I... almost have to pinch myself that I’m actually able, for the first time in my life, to turn my own lights on, thermostat up, kettle on, blinds closed, and so on." "For me, it’s not about an added bit of convenience. It is about independence, pure and simple." Smart home technology is an incredible ally for people with reduced mobility.

22.01.2022 A new research study, investigating how service robots in hotels could help redefine leadership and boost the hospitality industry, has taken on new significance in the light of the seismic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on tourism and business travel. The research behind the paper involved speaking to 19 hotel HR experts to identify the key trends and major challenges that will emerge in the next ten years and how leaders should deal with the challenges brought about by ser...vice robot technologies. Results showed that while service robots are anticipated to increase efficiency and productivity of hotel activities, they may also pose challenges such as high costs, skill deficits and significant changes to the organizational structure and culture of hotels. Therefore, the anticipated applications and integration of robotic technology will require leaders of the future to carefully consider the balance between the roles of service robots and human employees in the guest experience and to nurture a work environment that embraces open-mindedness and change. The project finished in March 2020 just as COVID-19 broke out and as the virus rendered non-essential travel impossible, most hotels around the globe are feeling a catastrophic economic impact. There is now even more interest in developing innovative ways of deploying service robots across all economic sectors to limit human interaction. Considering the current pandemic, many industries are having to reinvent processes and systems to cope with a new isolated way of life. Robotic interaction in hotels could facilitate more socially distanced models of operation to enable a safer and faster reopening and recovery of some hotels. Dr Tracy Xu, Lecturer in Hospitality at The University of Surrey's world-renowned School of Hospitality and Tourism Management said: "Application of service robots in the hotel industry is on the rise. During the lockdown period it is likely that hotel managers will be planning for a 'fresh start' in the recovery and rebuilding period after the social isolation restrictions have been lifted and this is predicted to have a positive stimulus on the adoption of service robots.

21.01.2022 As a pandemic grips the world, a person could be forgiven if they had forgotten about another threat to humanity's way of life - the rise of robots. For better or worse the robots are going to replace many humans in their jobs, analysts say, and the coronavirus outbreak is speeding up the process. "People usually say they want a human element to their interactions but Covid-19 has changed that," says Martin Ford, a futurist who has written about the ways robots will be integr...ated into the economy in the coming decades. "[Covid-19] is going to change consumer preference and really open up new opportunities for automation." Companies large and small are expanding how they use robots to increase social distancing and reduce the number of staff that have to physically come to work. Robots are also being used to perform roles workers cannot do at home. Walmart, America's biggest retailer, is using robots to scrub its floors. Robots in South Korea have been used to measure temperatures and distribute hand sanitiser. With health experts warning some social distancing measures may need to be in place through 2021, robot workers may be in greater demand. Credits: BBC Full news: https://snip.ly/pv28as

20.01.2022 Telepresence robots help university students learning remotely to feel more a part of the class, new research by Oregon State University suggests. The findings are particularly important given the nationwide shift to online instruction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing many students who otherwise would be in classrooms and labs to pursue their education from a distance. The National Science Foundation study led by Naomi Fitter of the OSU College of Engineering examined... the experiences of university students attending classes in three formats: in person; through a telepresence robot; and via distance learning tools such as livestreaming, recorded lectures and calling into class with questions. The preferences of the 18 engineering students who were studied were split between distance learning tools, or DLTs, and attending in person. Instructors of the four courses in the study uniformly preferred teaching students in person. Full new: snip.ly/dojtl0 Credits: Credit: Naomi Fitter, OSU College of Engineering.

19.01.2022 Northwestern University researchers have developed a decentralized algorithm that guarantees collision and congestion avoidance, a key step toward controlling fleets of driverless vehicles. The researchers applied the algorithm to a simulation of 1,024 robots and to a 100-robot swarm in a laboratory, and in each instance the robots reliably and efficiently converged into a pre-determined shape in less than 60 seconds. To ensure coordination that avoids collisions and deadlock..., the algorithm views the ground under the robots as a grid, and each robot knows its position using technology similar to global positioning systems. Each robot uses sensors to communicate with its neighbors and interpret nearby grid spaces as vacant or occupied. Northwestern's Michael Rubenstein said, "By understanding how to control our swarm robots to form shapes, we can understand how to control fleets of autonomous vehicles as they interact with each other." 17.01.2022 A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports on three Swedish patients who have lived, for several years, with this new technology -- one of the world's most integrated interfaces between human and machine. This is a new concept for artificial limbs, which are called neuromusculoskeletal prostheses -- as they are connected to the user's nerves, muscles, and skeleton. The new concept of a neuromusculoskeletal prosthesis is unique in that it delivers several differen...t features which have not been presented together in any other prosthetic technology in the world: It has a direct connection to a person's nerves, muscles, and skeleton. It is mind-controlled and delivers sensations that are perceived by the user as arising from the missing hand.

12.01.2022 Temi robots have joined the battle against coronavirus As Covid-19 continues to spread throughout the world, some Asian countries have been able to fast-track robots to minimise human-to-human contact while still caring for patients. Telehealth, which has been talked about in this country, has just reached a whole new level. The AI-powered robotic assistant known as Temi is the brainchild of Israeli start-up Robotemi, which has now converted the robot to help minimise the spr...ead of the coronavirus. How? By adding a thermal camera and thermometer for taking temperatures; equipping it with a tray for carrying food, drinks and medicine; and attaching a sink where staff can wash their hands. Hundreds of the robots are now in use in China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan as they deal with the pandemic. Video:BBC
