25.01.2022 I was so touched by the beautiful comments and messages on my post from Friday. I have an interesting relationship with social media; sometimes I love it and want to share and others I just need a big ol’ break from it. . I know we’re told we should show up consistently but so far that hasn’t felt right for me. Instead I show up when I’m called to share the important stuff and when I do it from the heart, that’s when you beautiful peeps respond. . I’ve been questioning eve...rything lately (in a good way!) but one of the things I’ve realised is that I wasn’t sure how I should be talking about my pregnancy on here. It’s my business page after all, but I’ve realised that there’s no escaping how much becoming a mama has already changed me. That all of the changes are only going to make me a better person and therefore better at how I show up in my business. That I now feel ready to share and in doing so my story might just resonate with you (yes you!) and that in itself totally makes it worth it! . Anytime the word should comes into our mind or out of our mouth it’s an invitation to throw that should out the window and do whatever the f WE want! . And if nothing else, let’s treat ourselves with the grace and kindness we deserve. 25.01.2022 Stopping to pause and reflect on THIS . Ok so obvs none of us wished to be caught up in a global pandemic! BUT we are human and we learn, and grow and change and I’ll bet there’s *at least* one thing that’s happening for you right now that past you dreamed about. Whether it’s a slower pace of life, more time with your kids, an opportunity to start up your own business, or more time for baking... . 25.01.2022 There’s no magic fix for all of the things currently going on in our world. But I can tell you one thing for sure, the world would be a better place if everyone had a little more empathy. . Instead of judging someone, perhaps try to understand where they might be coming from. Ask questions from a place of compassion and love. Be open to understanding that each of our experiences are ours and although we might not agree, it doesn’t make them untrue for someone who has had that... experience. . I was reminded this morning that the times when I have been most judgemental (and not empathetic) were the times when I was most unhappy within myself. So perhaps empathy needs to start within ourselves, for ourselves and then it will expand out to others in a beautiful ripple effect. . As an empath, Empathy is my favourite part of the human centred design process. There is so much power in it, and it goes way deeper and reaches way further than just a stage in a process. 24.01.2022 I have to admit I haven’t been doing this. And yep, I totally get it...I’ve got a baby, @rob.ruben and I run three businesses between us (and plans for more!), he’s studying, working a part time job, we just moved house and the last year...well we all know what happened last year! . Life is pretty damn wonderful right now, but it’s busy. Parenthood is awesome and all consuming. And as mama’s, I think it’s normal for us to put ourselves last. Yep I’ve fallen into that trap.... Well F*ck that! . The only person that is responsible for making me a priority is me. It can’t be all the time (anymore!) but it can, and it actually has to be, some of the time. I also need to follow the advice I give to others! So today I’m having a massage (in the middle of the day!) and I swear right here and right now the long list of things I’ve been putting off for me is going to be made a priority! . 24.01.2022 Two years ago, I took off on one of the biggest adventures of my life. I’d taken long service leave from my job (never to return!) and was about to head off on a two month around the world trip, starting with a week at @stanforddschool . There is no doubt that trip changed me, and now I see it as the beginning of this most recent chapter of my life. At Stanford I met some amazing people and finally realised it was time to back myself and start my own business. In San Francis...co I experienced my first Pride (amazing!), in NYC I fell in love with the hectic-ness of the city, while also simultaneously listening to the need to personally slllooowww down. In Amsterdam I spent hours at cafes crafting my new business, in Montenegro and Croatia I FINALLY learnt what boundaries are and began to put them in place for myself. In France I celebrated a much loved friend’s special birthday, ending with a surprise trip to Budapest where I fell in love with the city before heading home via Singapore. . All of these experiences in themselves were amazing, but the best thing was that, that trip really helped me find myself. I finally gave myself permission to step away from the life I thought I was supposed to be living and let myself be free to figure out who and what I wanted to be. There is no doubt travel changes you, and solo travel forces you to face so many things that can be ignored in day to day life. . Last year when I paused to reflect on this milestone I was so proud of what I had achieved. And now looking back on the year since it’s been another amazing 12 months. Two businesses, @thisishivecollective and @thespace_co. A wonderful partner (who funnily enough I met just before I left but it took another 10 months before we finally had our first date!). Our baby girl due in October. Living through a global pandemic. Amazing friendships solidified through challenging times. So many lessons in patience, slowing down and continuing to back myself even when things get tough. So many things to be grateful for. I know 2020 has been tough for many. 23.01.2022 Before I even start writing my goals for the year I create my vision board and choose a word to guide the year ahead. . This year my words are HARMONY and FLOW. Yep I’m being greedy and having two this year! They’re front and centre right here on my vision board and they feel so right. It’s exactly how I want to experience this year (and know I deserve to) as we balance and blend our life as a new family with our work. 23.01.2022 If I stay silent, then I’m part of the problem. . Almost 10 years ago I had the big realisation that all was not equal in the world. Forgive me for being late to that party, I knew it before then but that was when I really realised that the pure luck of the colour of my skin, my able body, sexual orientation and the place where I was born gave me a big headstart in life. Once you learn something like that, there’s really no unlearning it and the journey ever since has been ...both enlightening and heartbreaking. . What is happening in the world right now to POC is not new, it’s been happening forever. It’s just that people, white people, are only now finally starting to pay attention...because it’s so in our face it can no longer be ignored. As I often say, the problem with privilege is that those who have it are oblivious. . My biggest lessons on how people are treated differently based on the colour of their skin have come from living life alongside this guy. Where even in a multicultural country like Australia people are treated differently because of where they’re born and the colour of their skin. Hey, even the whiteness of your skin is highly valued in Asian cultures. . It pisses me off that he’s treated differently to me, actually I think it pisses me off more than it does him! And what breaks my heart is that our daughter might be treated differently because of the colour of her skin/cultural background. Our daughter will be raised to be strong, independent, kind, loving and proud of all parts of her heritage; Filipino, Spanish, Chinese, Australian, English and Irish. The fact that she would be treated any differently for any of part of her is not ok with me. #fiercemama . Racism in any form is unacceptable. People being treated differently or lesser than because of the colour of their skin happens daily, and must stop. We need to call it when we see it. We need to let those in power know that it’s unacceptable and needs to change. And we need to be aware of our actions every single day, and how we ourselves might be (unintentionally?) contributing to the injustices. 22.01.2022 It felt so good to reopen the @thespace_co yesterday for the first time since we temporarily closed in early April. . It’s so great to be back interacting face to face with other awesome humans (at a safe distance of course!), not to mention how fabulous it is to be working somewhere else other than my loungeroom! . 21.01.2022 There’s no doubt 2020 kicked our butts but for me it wasn’t all bad; a lot of learnings, a lot of growth and a year where I really discovered what was most important in life. For me it was the year I received the greatest gift and for that I am so grateful. . Feel what you need to feel about 2020. It may take some time to fully process and that’s ok. I’m a big believer in the importance of acknowledging endings and beginnings and this year it’s maybe more important than ever.... But it probably won’t happen overnight and that’s ok too. . 18.01.2022 That’s it, final day in the office, all my work for @thespace_co is handed over and I’m now fully on parental leave! . It feels strange and a little surreal but at 39 weeks it was time! Although the timing of our reopening coming up at the end of the month isn’t ideal, I do feel grateful that I’ve been able to continue working by managing my schedule and energy levels in a way that works for me and the business. #bizownerlife #freedom . 16.01.2022 This isn’t the first time I’m going to say it and it won’t be the last! Empathy is a superpower and when we used it magical things happen. . Let’s start with ourselves and ask this (because I’ve found when we’re not being empathic to ourselves it’s very hard to do it with others); What’s something that I have been hard on myself about and how could I show myself a little empathy today?... When I find myself judging myself and my thoughts or actions how might I pause and apply empathy to allow myself to take more positive action? And now turning outward; Who is someone I’ve been hard on and how might I engage the power of empathy to sit with and try to understand on a deeper level their perspective and why they might be behaving this way? When I find myself frustrated by another persons behaviour, how might I stop in the moment and engage in empathy by asking gentle questions rather than making assumptions. . Take a note of your responses to these questions, journal on them if you’re called to do so. I’d love to know how you engage empathy in your life and what difference in makes in your interactions with others. . 15.01.2022 My out of office is on! I’m officially on parental leave from @thisishivecollective as of today! . What does parental leave even look like when you have your own business you might ask! It’s a great question and I’m actually not quite sure tbh! All I know is that I wrapped up my client work this week, the OOO message is on and...well I guess I’ll figure out the rest from here. . Due to the covid situation I will now turn my focus to @thespace_co as we plan to re-open (at t...his stage end October). I will take time off in October when baby arrives and I may not physically be there much for the rest of the year but when it’s your biz and passion (and you’re coming off the back of a global pandemic!), you gotta do what you gotta do! . I know that I want to spend as much time with our baby girl as possible, especially in the first few months. Everyone says the time goes so quickly! I also feel lucky that having my own biz means I get to make the rules and work how, when and where I want so even though it may not be the parental leave I originally envisaged we have the freedom and flexibility to make it work for us. . 15.01.2022 On paper I had it all. A big job with seemingly endless opportunities ahead of me. A six figure salary and a company car. Wining and dining at some of the best and funkiest restaurants and bars across the city multiple times a week. International business class travel (funded by me, my work wasn’t that glam lol!). A beautiful home filled with an ever-increasing number of lovely things in my dream location in the inner norther suburbs of Melbourne. . In reality I was so close ...to self-combustion. I was working ridiculous hours, spending most of my days navigating politics and in back to back meetings where we never really seemed to resolve anything. I felt like I was always playing someone else’s game. My identity was so caught up in who I was at work, that I couldn’t even fathom that I could be or do anything else. I’d feel guilty for working from home, whether it was to get some much-needed quiet time for strategic work or to (god forbid!) bring some balance back into my life by being home when the plumber came. I was spending sooooo much money on self care just to try and counter how poorly I was nourishing my body and soul. . 11.01.2022 This photo was taken back in November on my first dip back into work life @thespace_co after Isabela was born. She’s just over one month old here and is pretty cool with the whole thing! . Fast forward to this week (and she’s 3 months old, yikes where has that time gone?! ) and it’s the first official working week of the year at The Space. It was also my first week of some chunks of time away from my lil babe. I missed her. A lot. And I also have to admit that I enjoyed be...ing able to focus on tasks without being interrupted or feeling like I was pulled in 15 different directions! I also knew she was being very well looked after by her papa . Yep, it’s definitely early to be back into work (thanks covid! ) but I do have the advantage of being able to work around my family and even have them come to work with me sometimes I want to keep building these businesses for me and my family and to show my baby girl how important it is to follow her passion and chase her dreams . 11.01.2022 Happy New Year! It’s easy to feel the pressure of a new year to set big goals and make big plans. I’m so not down for that, especially after the year that we’ve just had! . What I do love about a new year though is that it’s a point in time we can say goodbye to the old things that are no longer serving us and invite in the new. New routines, new feelings and new ways of being. . I spent some time yesterday journaling about what this year will be like for me. How I will feel.... How I will bring balance to my life, with family at the heart of everything. I created my mood board (digitally for the first time!) and finalised my word/s for the year (I couldn’t pick just one!). 05.01.2022 I’m not going to lie, this past month or so has been HARD. Melbourne has been under the strictest lockdown laws in the world and it’s really taken a toll on me. After five months of getting on with it, and turning my focus to gratitude for all the things I do have when I wasn’t feeling great, it just wasn’t enough anymore. I was angry, resentful and exhausted. I was bored and unmotivated. I was angry about the impact on my businesses, and all I’ve been missing out on in my ...pregnancy. A few weeks ago, on the verge of heading into action mode I realised I didn’t have the energy for it. I made a conscious decision that I wasn’t going to do what I always do. That I was going to sit in the discomfort of not knowing what was next and feel into my feminine energy. To take the time to reflect on why I was feeling the way I was feeling and understand what I really want out of my business and my life. And most important of all, not head into action before I was really ready just because I thought that I should. And it’s happened. This last week I’ve felt different. I’ve felt more ready to tackle the challenges ahead, but in a gentle and considered way. It feels right to start taking action and I’ve also received signs of encouragement that I’m on the right track. I’m not bouncing off the walls (hello, I’m almost 35 weeks pregnant and still in very strict lockdown!) but I definitely feel better. It’s a great reminder that the inner work is never really done. That every time we’re ready to up level there’s a hurdle to get over and most often that hurdle is our ego. Keeping us safe, but ultimately holding us back from our true purpose. I have no idea what’s around the corner, and I’m ok with that. I’m finishing up my last piece of client work for @thisishivecollective before I start maternity leave. Our baby girl is due to join us in the next month or so and I am so excited to meet her! And at a time when I thought I’d be spending my last couple of weeks working from @thespaceco, Elle and I are planning to re-open (whenever we can!) with a refreshed offering and a renewed passion. 04.01.2022 The Hive blog is up and running! Honestly, I’ve been avoiding it for a while but it’s well and truly time...and why not kick it off with a really personal post?! . This weekend marks an important milestone in my personal journey of change. It’s 12 months since the universe literally gave me a big push and I realised how desperately I needed to stop, reflect and make change in my life. . I was stressed, anxious and just generally unhappy in my life. I was working myself ...into the ground for an organisation that was going to go on just fine whether I was there or not! . I’m a bit nervous about putting this out there warts and all, but I truly believe that it’s through sharing our experiences; the good, the bad and the ugly that we can all learn and grow from one another. 02.01.2022 Over my lifetime nothing stands out to me as being so important as the people I've had in my corner. My support crew, or as Megan Galbally and I often refer to them; our scaffolding, meaning the people (and sometimes things) that we put around us to help hold things together. They've been people I've met at work and outside of work. Some have been an amazing support in my career, others in life in general and some in both. Some of them were friends or colleagues, others were ...professionals like Coaches and Therapists that were a paid part of my support crew. They’re the people who were there for me through the good times and the challenging times. The one's who lent an ear when I just needed to talk, or gave me a shoulder to cry on when things became overwhelming. Those who share a celebratory drink when things are going well, and a commiserative one when things are not so good. These wonderful people lift me up and they're also not afraid to lovingly give me a dose of hard truth when I need it (this bit is SO important). And when it comes to these people, I now realise that they have come into my life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Take some time today to think about your support crew. Who are they? How are they supporting you? Are there any gaps in your crew and if so, who might you need to bring on board? And for those in your crew, tell them how much their support means to you by tagging them here or sending them a message. I'm sure it will brighten their day! 01.01.2022 I can't remember a time when so much change was happening, in the world, my work and my life. . Every time I think I get a handle on a new direction something else comes up and I've got to (please forgive me; the overused but appropriate word of 2020) pivot again! . Can you relate?... . Contrary to popular belief, humans don't actually resist change, but we do have a reaction to change that feels like a loss. And the loss of freedom and control we're experiencing at the moment is quite extreme. So it's not surprising you might be feeling a bit fatigued right now. . I am so determined to do lockdown 2.0 better than last time. This is how; I took the time to feel the shock, disappointment and implications of the announcement. I made some immediate biz decisions that needed to be made, then took a rest day. After that I was re-energised and ready to tackle the next pivot/s. Choosing a positive mindset and focusing on what I CAN do, rather than what I can't do. Mindset is huge, I can't stress this one enough! Doing things in my day that energise me, like going for a walk, learning new skills and working from @thespace_co when I can't work from home. . Tell me, are you feeling this?
