NO ONE should miss out on these conditions!... Spoon Bay reef was absolutely beautiful as well this morning! Even the Haven is clear and beautiful! We still have spaces left for tomorrows dives all day, after so many bad weekends lets take advantage of the pristine conditions, cause tomorrows forecast is the same. COME DIVING!!!!! 23.01.2022 Just a little friend from our night dive on the weekend!

23.01.2022 Sometimes, we get some local visitors. Like this great little video of a Grey Nurse Shark on the Adelaide back in January. And winter is really GNS season, so come diving on the Adelaide again to see for yourself what marine life it is attracting.

22.01.2022 So are we are ready for diving this weekend ? Last weekend we put a new mooring out on the Adelaide. This was followed by a terrific dive at Spoon Bay Reef. One weedy sea dragon was found, which was good, because we have not seen any around our local reefs since very big seas a few years ago. As I write this news letter, it is blowing hard from the South. It is forecast to ease off for the weekend. Make your bookings for the weekend now but please confirm on Friday to see wha...t the sea state is. Saturday 8.00 Pinnacle 25m a good dive even when there is a swell 10.00 Adelaide wreck, but we do need numbers for this dive. 12.30 Forrester’s Reef 26m 2.30 Adelaide wreck Sunday. 8.00 Sweep City 24m 10.00 Adelaide wreck if there is sufficient interest 12.30 2 Poles Reef 15m 21m 2.30 Adelaide wreck Please call us at the shop on Friday for the latest update on the sea conditions. Don’t forget, we do have ‘hot’ showers here, at the Dive Centre. Plus free coffee, tea and biscuits. Please feel free to just drop in for a chat. Try 43 841219 or 0457841219 Or book on line through our website www.terrigaldive.com.au Alternatively email us [email protected] STUFF Spoon Bay Reef, a dive site we visited last week, is notable for the abundance of benthic marine life. Marine life that is obviously out of its depth. This underwater cliff, that is probably no more than 200m long, is a mere 13m deep at the top and 16m at the base. The whole wall is covered in sponges, bryozoans, compound ascidians, tunicates and this is the most interesting, big stands of gorgonian corals. Anywhere else you dive on the Central Coast, these beautiful soft coral fans are not to be found any shallower than 18m. This is what I mean by out of it’s depth Gorgonian Coral Mopsella ellisii This species of gorgonian is found in four quite different colours. Red, pink, orange & maroon If you look very closely there are allied cowries similar to this one to be found on the branches, These small shells, 3 species in NSW, not much more than 10mm long, also have a colouration that matches the colour of the host gorgonian upon which they live. The late, well known naturalist, Neville Coleman experimented by putting 4 pieces of gorgonian (the 4 colours) in a fish tank. At the other end of the tank he put a number of the ovulid cowries of different colours. The result ? The cowries found their way to the matching coloured coral. This is why they are so hard to find in the wild. Happy diving Les

22.01.2022 Such a beautiful weekend with weather also brought the most amazing dive at the Cod Hole near the haven. Time for more people to see and appreciate these amazing creatures. Thanks to Geoff Dove for the video.

21.01.2022 The hump back whales are back on the scene or should I say on audio. This weekend many divers on the wreck of the Adelaide reported hearing whale song but there were no sightings neither underwater, which would have been awesome, one from yours truly sitting in the boat. We often think of creatures, such as whales and dolphins, as beautiful to observe and most of us have an unfulfilled bucket list in diving, where an underwater encounter with Whales and dolphins features pret...ty high, particularly at the same time. Something I saw a few years ago, maybe, could make you re-think this wish. We were involved in some fish survey work with Dr., now (Prof), Bill Gladstone. As we entered a bay near Wybung Head. Just North of Norah Head we observed a large pod of dolphins frolicking in close to the rocks. Bill and his assistant kitted up and entered the water and, armed with tape measures and slates, disappeared beneath the surface, to start the survey Within a few minutes there was huge burst of air at the surface, as if there had been an explosion from down below. My immediate thought was that a hose line had ruptured and fully expected to see a very distressed diver come to the surface. Instead a large humpback whale broke the surface no more than 15m away from the boat. The blast of air had presumably been from the whale. What happened next was surprising, at least half a dozen dolphins, here I am just guessing because most are below the surface, rushed in and proceeded to, for want of a better word, to attack the whale. They swam at speed towards the side of the whale and at the last moment jumped over it. Some appeared to actually hit the whale others rushed at its mouth, just veering away at the last moment. This frenzied harassment continued at the whale for some minutes. The whale, then outnumbered by cranky dolphins, beat a hasty retreat from the bay. A bay that the dolphins obviously, for that moment, regarded as their territory. There again, perhaps they were simply trying to stop it beaching ? So next time you encounter a pod of dolphins underwater try not to look too much like a whale. Did the dive’s down below see any of this ? Not the harassment but Bill did have the whale swim into his transect and was able to tick it off as a sighting. Something that doesn’t happen very often. Les See more

17.01.2022 TERRIGAL DIVE NEWS 17th August 2016 Last weekend’s diving had to have been the best for many weeks This weekend is forecast to be goo...d for diving with Westerly winds to calm the seas. Saturday 7.30 Reef dive, With the flat sea 1st point is an excellent dive. 9.30 Adelaide wreck, Some bookings but we can still take a few more. 12.30 Adelaide wreck Sunday. 7.30. Sweep City 24m 9.30. Adelaide wreck : there are still some vacancies. 11.00 2 Poles Reef 15m 21m 2.30 Adelaide wreck If this programme looks familiar you’re right it is the same as last weekend because we changed the reef dives on the day, last weekend and dived 2 poles reef instead of 1st point. Please call us at the shop on Friday for the latest update on the sea conditions. Don’t forget, we do have ‘hot’ showers here, at the Dive Centre. Plus free coffee, tea and biscuits. Please feel free to just drop in for a chat. Try 43 841219 or 0457841219 Or book on line through our website www.terrigaldive.com.au Alternatively email us [email protected] STUFF Annelid worms This family of worms are, for obvious reasons, called Feather duster tube worms. Sabellastarte Around the NSW coast the largest of our feather duster worms is this one Sabellastarte sp Whilst not as colourful as some of the tropical species it still possesses the lightning fast reflex to withdraw into its tube. When found around the local rocks and sand, the tube is soft but distinct. Which is why it was surprising to have one found out on the Adelaide wreck last weekend. It was tucked into a corner up on the deck head in one of the compartments down below. They are known to favour locations with good water movement, where the tentacles can pick up food particles. They are assured of good water movement on the Adelaide, as most of us know. Many divers who regularly dive the tropical reefs are familiar with the colourful so called ‘Christmas tree’ worms. These are in the worm family serpulidae Try to get close for a photograph and quicker than you can say ‘flash’ they disappear back into their hole in the coral Global Warming. If you watched Q & A on the ABC two nights ago you would have seen the eloquent Professor Brian Cox, an obvious global warming expert come up against one of our new senators, an ardent climate change denyer who is so well known that I have forgotten his name already. He obviously did not win the debate against the learned prof. This got me thinking, is there any middle ground between these two camps.? Look at it from a diver’s point of view. Global warming, sea levels rising. Hey is this all bad ? The sea becomes warmer. Good, I don’t have to travel so far North to dive with pretty tropical fish. The coral reefs start to extend further South. Endless Summer. Winter, if there is a winter, becomes shorter. Sea levels rise. Can you see a pattern arising here, if you will excuse the pun. Back to thinner wet suits. 4mm is so much easier to get on than my 7mm. Less weights on the belt. This has to be good for my back. Less compression on a thin suit at depth, so less time playing around trying to get my buoyancy just right. Sea levels rise. Now I don’t have a problem finding a 40m dive on the Adelaide for my deep dive students. Less distance to walk down to the water’s edge with all the gear on. The Water is up to the courtyard of the dive shop. I can tie the dive boat up to the hand rail around the dive shop courtyard. Perhaps the playing field will flood and we can turn it in to a marina. The rugby club closes and converts into a water polo club I can park my car closer to the dive site. Roll on global warming Just a thought Equipment It is not very often that something revolutionary come onto the diving market. Last year, at the ScubaPro dealers meeting, we were introduced to a new BC. I think there were so many new ideas built into this BC that it does deserve the title Revolutionary We were all sworn to secrecy but finally this week it has been released. I think it will make a lot of divers think again about what makes a good BC. Here is the HYDRO JUST 1 WEEK UNTIL DELIVERY RRP $1195 Safe Diving Les 0457841219 43841219

16.01.2022 Working on the priciple of If you don’t have something good to say, keep your mouth closed That’s exactly what has been the case for the past few weeks when it comes to diving. However the weather seems to have settled into steady Westerly winds, which calm the seas and the viz has come back to normal The Westerly winds allow us to dive locations like Spoon Bay reef & 1st Point. Dive sites which are beautiful but hard to dive when the seas are up. The boat has had a polish... and a coat of go fast paint. So we are ready for diving this weekend Saturday 8.00 1st Point. A great dive right in under the cliffs 19m to 26m 10.00 Adelaide wreck, but we do need numbers for this dive. 12.30 Spoon Bay reef. A beautiful reef with some of the best stands of gorgonian corals on the coast. 12.-15m A terrific 2nd dive. 2.30 Adelaide wreck Sunday. 8.00 Rock Lobster Reef area. 26m 10.00 Adelaide wreck if there is sufficient interest 12.30 Fifeshire reef 15-18m 2.30 Adelaide wreck Please call us at the shop on Friday for the latest update on the sea conditions. 09.01.2022 Terrific diving today at Spoon Bay Reef. This shallow dive has to be the very best wall of soft corals, sponges and ascidians to be found anywhere on the Central Coast. The added plus, on today's, dive was a weedy sea dragon. We used to frequently see these beautiful creature in this area but a violent storm a few years ago seemed to wipe them out, so it is good to see them back. Start thinking now about booking in for next weekend's boat diving 0457841219 Les
