These are the sage words of advice given to patients by Adriana Hada and her team from t...he PA Hospital Falls Prevention Advisory Committee. The Assistant Director of Nursing says falls risk isn’t limited to the elderly. We treat all inpatients as vulnerable because apart from advancing age, there are many other factors that increase the risk of falling, said Ms Hada. These risks include medical conditions, medication usage, impaired mobility and gait, nutrient deficiencies, impaired cognition, and visual impairments. Preventing falls is critical because the effects can be long-lasting or deadly. Even if a patient doesn’t have a fracture or injury after the fall, often the psychological impacts related to fear of falling makes them less likely to mobilise, and this can compromise their ongoing recovery. The NADC accreditation aims to lift the standard of diabetes care delivered by services across Australia by identifying practices and procedures that result in improved care, improved quality of life among people with diabetes, and a reduction in the prevalence of diabetes-related complications using a three-pronged approach combining governance, educational and clinical criteria.
