25.01.2022 STATUS UPDATE from Friends of the Cerberus Inc.: We are breaking our self-imposed period of radio silence to provide this update specifically in response to queries received from our supporters. What is the current situation with the monitor former HMVS/HMAS Cerberus (later HMAS Platypus II) in relation to Bayside Council's stated intention that they will contract a monolithic infill of the historic warship with 4,000 tonnes of concrete? In answer, the following ........ Continue reading at - http://www.cerberus.com.au/cgi-bin/newsscript/newsscript.pl

20.01.2022 The Victorian state elections are upon us and my vote will likely be submitted as informal for the first time ever because I can't justify lending any support t...o the drivel almost universally being pedalled as good governance. During this campaign someone suggested to me that our governments and political parties are run like the proverbial 'local cricket club' and that's why everything is going pear-shaped. Wrong, wrong, wrong ..... If they were run like the local cricket club we would be far better off. These 'headless chooks' couldn't organise a game of marbles at morning recess. I got several replies to the offer of my vote in exchange for political favours should candidates be successful and actually get elected. The 'favours' I sought were - 1) Stop the impending concrete infill of Cerberus at Half Moon Bay and the accompanying 600 tonnes contribution of atmospheric C02. 2) Demonstrate some backbone and act against those encroaching upon Australia's Antarctic Territorial waters & fishing zone in breach of not only our sovereignty but also numerous international treaties established to protect the Antarctic environment. These two 'favours' were posted during September/October and the replies I got were all regarding the Cerberus, most of these were mundane party-line bottom draw templates written by staffers to deflect rather than effect. A few acknowledged the issue and referred me down the line in hopes that I would get tired of following the rabbit. One, Rosemary Lavin Animal Justice Party Upper House Candidate Eastern Metro, commented on my timeline about her opposition to pouring concrete into a marine environment which was welcome as far as it went. Unfortunately she also opposes injected structural polyurethane, the only sensible alternative at this stage with even a remote chance of replacing concrete. As far as I can discover the mix proposed cures almost instantly in water and is environmentally inert in that state which is in line with information published by Friends of the Cerberus Inc.. We still have a Commonwealth election early next year and my vote remains 'for sale'. I will be adding more issues here that I feel don't get enough attention. These are the issues that will get my vote for any candidate who I believe will make a difference in the 'right' direction. Here's a useful link -
20.01.2022 USS Camanche (1866) pre-dates our own HMVS Cerberus by a couple of years and like other US monitors of the period, lacked the advantages of a breastwork deck which famously set Cerberus (launched 1868 in Britain) apart from her immediate predecessors 'across the pond'. On this occasion it is interesting to compare the accompanying photo of a turret engine in Camanche with James Millett's impression of one in Cerberus from his well researched sketches of 'inside the shield dec...k' published at - http://www.cerberus.com.au/shield_forward_1024.html Our thanks to David Black Mastro for sharing the USS Camanche photo in our Fb group Save HMVS Cerberus. 18.01.2022 My Dad built a Cerberus model. It took many months, in such fine detail to which the deck was made from the actual Cerberus decking timber and their were maps w...ith descriptions inside the wheel house. He donated it to the Cerberus museum. My dad is Peter Utber and he was the Australian champion Mussel Loading shooter back in the seventies, then my Mum and Dad, with friends created the Australian Bush Band called Governors Pleasure, later dad became a great artist painting many ships... Update... I remember dad speaking of using the timber of the Cerberus when I was young, but when I just confirmed with him that he did. He replied that he didn't. He would have tried to get permission and access though, no doubt, because I remember that being the plan. See more

17.01.2022 This short film includes a depiction of the Confederate and Union Ironclads Merrimack/Virginia and Monitor in their historic clash during the Battle of Hampton Roads 8 & 9 March 1862. Just five and a half years later the Breastwork Monitor Cerberus was laid down at Jarrow UK for the colony of Victoria. She featured vastly improved sea-keeping qualities together with many advanced innovations that would prove invaluable to the future development of both surface and submarine ...warships well into the next century. (Background - USS Merrimack was a Union steam frigate burned and sunk in dock 20 April 1861 then raised by the Confederacy and converted into the casemate ironclad CSS Virginia). With traditional Monitors still in use by today's navies time has shown that their most notable feature, the 'monitor deck' (low free-board) which so enhanced the original Monitors' capabilities, is still prominent. In fact without it, a ship isn't really a 'monitor' at all despite a sometimes loose application of the term.
16.01.2022 Is this the 'last gasp' for Cerberus? Let's hope not! Bayside Council recently lodged a formal application with Heritage Victoria to fill our former HMVS/HMAS Cerberus with concrete under the guise of Heritage preservation despite clearly being at odds with the "Burra Charter" which is accepted nationally as the standard for heritage conservation. http://www.cerberus.com.au/cgi-bin/newsscript/newsscript.pl... 14.01.2022 SISTERS IN ARMS ! Thanks to Gran Duque Sergio for sharing this photo of HMVS Cerberus' sister ship HMS Magdala, one of two delivered to Bombay (India) soon after Cerberus left for Melbourne (Victoria, Australia). The other was HMS Abyssinia, slightly the lesser in both dimensions and engine power but otherwise of identical design to the Cerberus class. Although first to be built, Abyssinia left Greenhithe 23 November, almost a month after Magdalla and arrived at Bombay via th...e Suez Canal 23 January 1871 having made the voyage under steam alone. Abyssinia apparently managed well without the temporary built-up sides installed on Cerberus for her longer voyage, nor the temporary masts and rigging provided for both Cerberus and Magdalla. Cerberus had departed 20 October from Sheerness and Magdalla followed a week later only to be delayed after breaking both screws whilst navigating the then narrow Suez Canal. Both Abyssinia and Magdalla were purpose built for defense of Bombay Harbour as was Cerberus for Melbourne's Port Phillip. In 1892 both Indian Monitors were re-armed with 8" breach loading guns to replace their original 10" muzzle loading riffles after modification and conversion of the mountings to hydraulic training. In 1897 they were also fitted with 7 machine guns and 2 boat guns each. Abyssinia and Magdalla were broken up in 1903 and 1904 respectively after spending their entire service life in defense of Bombay Harbour. The accompanying pages provide additional links and a lot of interesting reading about these ships and much technical detail that applied equally to HMVS Cerberus. 13.01.2022 In Support of the Case AGAINST Filling Cerberus with CONCRETE: We have had a number of queries about our proposed alternative infill, structural polyurethane, s...hould the current intention to use concrete be abandoned. Despite the cement component of a 4,000 tonne concrete infill delivering 600 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 into our environment, many seem to be of the opinion that polyurethane would deliver an even worse environmental impact but the accompanying Technical Data Sheet reinforces our assertion that this product is "environmentally safe" and is "NSF/ANSI 61.5 compliant". 11.01.2022 To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of HMVS Cerberus in Victoria, Australia Post has commissioned a postage stamp. The stamp depicted above shows ...Cerberus as she appeared in the mid 1880s. Ian Hansen, has done an excellent job, with our input being limited to the direction of the smoke, the height of the fighting top, the colour of the breastwork, the number of boats and the lack of a forward charthouse. I agonised over whether to ask for the Nordenfelt machine guns to be included but decided that they would not be visible on a postage stamp size image. The painting clearly shows the problem faced by the lookouts in the fighting top as described by the Argus's newspaper correspondent on 31 March 1888 - "There is perhaps only one more undesirable position, [than the stoke hole] & that is to be sent up to the crow's-nest on board the Cerberus when the funnel is belching forth its thick cloud of smoke." 07.01.2022 11 November is "Armistice Day", known variously around the world as 'Remembrance Day' (alternatively 'Remembrance Sunday' which is marked on the nearest Sunday to 11 Nov) and 'Veterans Day'. Since an Armistice was signed in the early hours of 11 November 1918 to formally end the Great War at 11:00am that morning, the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour has been a time traditionally set aside for two minutes of silent reflection in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice (some have reduced this to one minute). This Sunday (11 Nov 2018) it will be 100 years since that first Armistice Day. If you haven't already done so, buy a poppy to wear and please make a point off stopping where ever you are at 11:00am to pay the appropriate respects.

With less than 500 to go Friends of the Cerberus Inc.'s main website at http://www.cerberus.com.au will pass half a million unique visits within the next few days. We think this is a big deal that highlights the level of ongoing interest in and support for our 150 year old monitor former HMVS/HMAS Cerberus which is currently the subject of a determination by Bayside Council and our so called Heritage authorities to end ...all future conservation efforts and actively destroy the ship by concrete infill. . . . 04.01.2022 The Heritage Network said - Due to restrictions imposed as a result of the current pandemic all marches associated with 2020 ANZAC Day ceremonies across Australia have been cancelled and memorial services closed to the public. These must be in writing (hard-copy) and be posted, NOT emailed, to Heritage Victoria PO Box 500 Melbourne 8002 Victoria Australia, as indicated by the original news item to ...arrive no later than 23 April '18. If you live outside Australia and wish to make a submission feel free to do so by email to Friends of the Cerberus Inc. making sure you allow a few days for us to print and forward by conventional mail on your behalf. Hard-copy submissions are required by Heritage Victoria no later than their stated deadline in order to be considered regarding the defeat of Bayside Council's permit application but emails may still be sent as well. They certainly won't do any harm, just make sure the snail-mail is sent to arrive in time. All are urged to share this post on your timelines, any relevant Fb pages you manage and groups to which you belong. Every share, like and (favourable) comment helps to spread our message and encourage others to 'join the fray'.
