23.01.2022 Women’s Legal Service Queensland has prepared a petition to the PM, AG and Minister for Women calling for the repeal of ESPR. We need a large number of signatures to convey the level of concern on this issue, particularly today and in the coming days, but also in the coming weeks. Please share the petition widely with your networks and on social media. Here's the link for sharing: https://womenslegalservice.good.do/putkidssafetyfirstinfam/... WLSA has also issued a media release available here. Join me in supporting the Put kids safety first in family law Campaign The presumption of equal shared parental responsibility (ESPR) in family law shifts the focus of decision makers away from child safety and the best interests of children. With up to 85% of family court matters involving domestic and family violence, presuming parents should have contact puts children in danger. The current system places victims of violence on the backfoot in court, mediation and in their negotiations with the violent perpetrator. The legislation is complicated, easily misunderstood and its links to equal time incentivise violent perpetrators to pursue their rights in the court and other processes putting kids at risk. It is also very complex, making trials and legal processes longer and more expensive. Kids safety should always come first in family law. Show your support now for the removal of the presumption of equal shared parental responsibility in the Family Law Act. womenslegalservice.good.do

21.01.2022 Today we are very excited to announce the Hobart Women’s Shelter has an additional 10, 2 bedroom crisis pods to further assist women and children who are experiencing family violence and/or homelessness. The new pods are on our existing site to ensure women and children are connected with on-site 24/7 support. In addition to these new pods we have acquired 7 transitional properties for families. Over the past year we have grown 113%, with our property capacity now sitting at... 32. We would like to thank the Liberal Government, Minister for Housing, The Hon. Roger Jaensch MP for investment in capital and increasing our funding to employ additional staff to support women and children; Communities Tasmania for ensuring we were involved in all the planning and design; Fairbrother for going above and beyond the build to support staff and residents onsite; Royal Wolf for bringing an innovative temporary housing solution to the table; our staff for being flexible and responsive and to all of our supporters that provide us with the little things to ensure the new pods are comfortable and welcoming. A great example of collaboration and innovative thinking, thank you to all involved. Photo: The Hon. Roger Jaensch, Minister for Housing and Hobart Women's Shelter CEO, Janet Saunders

20.01.2022 A Message to our wonderful supporters and friends from the CEO I’d like to start by thanking all of our wonderful supporters and friends whose continued generosity and support in this current climate has both humbled and inspired us. Often the needs of women and children exceed our funding provided by the Department of Communities. So far this year, and with your help, we have supported 288 women and children who were homeless and/or who were escaping domestic violence acr...oss our existing 15 crisis accommodation units, and 56 family members who were experiencing homelessness in our 7 transitional properties. With support from the State Government we have ten, 2-bedroom crisis accommodation pods currently under construction, and we predict that we will increase the support we can provide by a minimum of 80 women and children in the 20/21 financial year. As a registered charity, Hobart Women’s Shelter relies heavily on donations both monetary and in kind, to support our service, and in particular, our children’s services . In its 2017 ‘Australia’s Welfare Report’ https://www.aihw.gov.au//aihw-australias-welfare-2017-chap the AIHW found that exposure to family and domestic violence can have a substantial impact on a child’s development, physical and mental wellbeing and schooling. In addition, children exposed to such violence have higher rates of social and emotional and behavioural problems than children with mothers who did not experience it. Thank you one and all again for your support, Janet Saunders CEO https://www.hobartws.org.au/donate/ See more

06.01.2022 Mentors in Violence Prevention Project The Tasmanian community will benefit from a new bystander project that will be delivered by Hobart Women’s Shelter in partnership with Engender Equality, Women’s Health Tasmania, and the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania, following a successful grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF). The Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program is an exciting new leadership program focussed on preventing all forms of violence. The program views ...all participants as empowered bystanders who can confront, interrupt, or prevent violence. Janet Saunders, Hobart Women’s Shelter CEO said that ‘the Mentors in Violence Prevention project will be important for the whole community as it seeks to enlist all people in helping to end violence in our communities by equipping them with the skills to be effective bystanders’. Ms Saunders said that the Hobart Women’s Shelter and partner organisations were delighted to receive the TCF funding as it would have a positive impact on the organisations, their supporters, and the general community. ‘We expect to be able to begin delivering the program workshops by September 2020 and will deliver 50 workshops state-wide over a three year period’. ‘The Workshop will give participants the chance to develop and practice concrete options which they can use in a range of situations ranging from the rather harmless-seeming to actual violence’. ‘While we are pleased that the Tasmanian Community Fund could see the worth of the project, we believe that the fact that we were able to demonstrate the whole-of-community benefit, was another major factor in our gaining grant support’ Ms Saunders said. ‘We believe we presented a good business case with clear budgeting protocols that highlighted the value of the program to the community as a whole’. The independent community funding body, the Tasmanian Community Fund was established following the sale of the Trust Bank in 1999 to give back to the community proceeds from the sale of a community asset. Since that time the TCF has allocated approximately $58.6 million to approximately 1700 state-wide projects. https://tascomfund.org//grant_round_40_successful_applican See more

02.01.2022 A great article in today's Mercury on page 8 https://mercury.digitaleditions.com.au/ Spotting red flags sooner saves lives ANNIE McCANN... THE Hobart Women’s Shelter has identified the need to increase domestic violence training and awareness in the community as new funding enables the launch of free violence prevention workshops. The announcement comes a day after Coroner Simon Cooper spoke out on a system gap failing murder victim Olga Neubert who was shot by her estranged husband Klaus Dieter Neubert in May 2015. Mrs Neubert had sought protection while facing a number of red flags including stalking and threats, but she was unable to secure police and lawyer protection. Hobart Women’s Shelter chief executive Janet Saunders said the new Mentors in Violence Prevention Program would help anyone in the community identify warning signs and intervene in domestic and family violence incidents. She said Mrs Neubert’s tragic case served an important reminder. We need really good skills for first responders when they’re assessing incidents of family violence so they can look at what those risks are and make sure they’ve got safety plans in place for women, Ms Saunders said. If people in the community know and look out for those red flags it could actually prevent someone from experiencing family violence. It could actually prevent someone dying. The 50 planned workshops have received funding from the Tasmanian Community Fund to begin in September and continue over a three-year period, with hopes to achieve 20 participants per workshop. The program will run in partnership with Engender Equality, Women’s Health Tasmania and the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania. Ms Saunders said unassisted requests had fallen 50 per cent during COVID-19, which she suspected was due to more perpetrators working from home. For more information or to sign up contact the Hobart Women’s Shelter on 6273 8455 or [email protected]

01.01.2022 A big thank-you to the Harcourts Foundation for their grant of $15,000 that will fund the establishment of a Therapeutic Horticultural Garden at Hobart Women's Shelter.
