25.01.2022 Hobart Chargers President, Brett McKay has welcomed today’s announcement that the Tasmanian Government will provide $1 million over four years to the three NBL1 clubs to deliver NBL1 schools clinics across Tasmania. The clinics provide a fantastic opportunity for students to interact and learn from some of our key players, and provides them with what it is like to go from grassroots competition all the way to elite level. The Hobart Chargers have already delivered clinics to 4000 school children this year alone. On behalf of the Hobart Chargers, I would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the Premier and the Minister for Sport and Recreation for this ongoing investment which recognises the strong and continuous support for basketball in this state.

17.01.2022 This morning our Hobart Chargers President Brett McKay had a very productive meeting with the Premier and Minister of Sport. Brett also presented the Premier with his own Hobart Chargers jersey. Our President congratulated the Premier and his Government on the way they have handled the Covid-19 pandemic, the strong stance on boarder control and the staged planed for easing of these restrictions. The discussions were around all things NBL and NBL1 especially with the upcoming ...announcement on the name this week. The Premier and Sports Minister were both supportive of the continuation of the community and basketball school clinics, with the Government already providing a funding extension for this year. With the ongoing support of the Government, the increase levels of participation in grassroots basketball, the strong commitment of the 3 NBL1 clubs to pathways for young basketballers and the arrival of the Tasmanian NBL team in 2021 basketball in Tasmania is going from strength to strength. Finally with the tenders now out for the DEC redevelopment and the tenders for the design, planning and oversight of construction of a $20 million dollar indoor multi-sport facility in Glenorchy our President was very keen to discuss a "Tasmanian supplier encouragement policy" for these projects as this would again stimulate the local economy and provide much needed employment for Tasmanians post the covid lock downs. #ChargersSTRONG #GoChargers #NBL1South

17.01.2022 Hobart Chargers President Brett McKay spoke with Chargers TV last Thursday at the Kingborough Sports Centre and said... "2020 has been a big year of basketball with no basketball but now we got to focus on 2021 and the first stage with focusing on 2021 is resigning our coaches and I'm very pleased to announced that both Mark Nash and Anthony Stewart have signed on for long term with the Hobart Chargers which gives us a fantastic foundation to build the future of the Hobart Chargers again to be going for the women's and men's championship in 2021" We also caught up with Women's Head Coach Mark Nash to get his comments as well... https://youtu.be/JhoJXXqx6g8 #ChargersSTRONG #GoChargers #NBL1South #ChargersTV

17.01.2022 The Hobart Chargers would like to congratulate women's superstar and local home-grown talent Sharna Thompson on signing with with the WNBL's JCU Townsville Fire for 2020-2021 WNBL season. Sharna started her basketball journey with local club Hobart Phoenix, and has remained loyal for her entire basketball career thus far. As a junior, Sharna has been selected to to play in junior national tournaments in 2014, 2018, and 2019, and was also selected as a member of the Australian... Under 19 Gems squad in 2018. Sharna first suited up with the Hobart Chargers in 2016, where she played in spurts as one of the youngest squad members. 2017 saw Sharna's output jump from 1.9 points per game to 9.4 points per game in 2017 where she played a crucial role in the last Charger's womens team to play finals. By 2018, Thompson was one of the most established guards of the competition, averaging over 15 points a game with lights-out shootig that had the crowd on their feet every night she stepped on the floor. Locally, Thompson is one of the standard bearers across the state. Her dedication to her team and game have seen her put in over 400 points in the 2020 Hobart Senior Basketball League at an average of over 37 points a game, awhile her preparation off the court is something that all aspiring young players should look up to. Thompson's pathway from young aspiring junior at local level to one of the preeminent players in Australia is something that only a local community-based NBL1 pathway can provide, and we here at the Hobart Chargers couldn't be be more proud to travel with Sharna along this pathway to superstardom as she takes the next step in this pathway. Congratulations Sharna!

17.01.2022 Hobart Chargers President Brett McKay has had a very positive meeting with Mr. David O’Byrne MP, Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Sport Minsiter. Naturally with David’s portfolios much of the discussion was around pathways for grassroots basketball from domestic & representative through to NBL1 and the importance of community programs undertaken by the three NBL1 clubs. Also discussed was the Tasmanian NBL team, the redevelopment of the Derwent Entertainment centre and the new community courts at Wilkinson point. Its fantastic that David has committed to continue his long standing support for the Hobart Chargers by taking up a player sponsorship for season 2021. Welcome back to the stampede David and thanks for all your support over the years. #ChargersSTRONG #GoChargers #NBL1South
