11.01.2022 MICHAEL ARTHUR MORGAN turned 16 the day he left Ireland, bound for Australia in 1921. Morgan shaped the face of the Tasmanian Greyhound Racing Industry into what it is today. Morgan was one of the founding fathers of track racing and The Hobart Greyhound Racing Club. ... He moved to Hobart in 1933 and initiated the Hobart Speed Coursing Club, which was later forced into liquidation prior to becoming known as the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club. Mr. Morgan stood at the helm for Hobart Greyhound Racing from 1935 until 1967 and ruled Greyhound Racing with an iron fist. Realising the importance of having a stand-out feature race, Morgan created The Hobart Thousand in 1935 (which is still to this day, Tasmanian’s only Group one event across all three codes) and The Maiden Thousand in 1949. M A Morgan is and forever will be honoured by the HGRC with a race each year. This Thursday night, the HGRC will host the St Ledger M A Morgan Stakes which will be conducted as a Best Eight Final, over 461 metres, for male dogs whelped on or after April 1, 2018

11.01.2022 As Minister for Racing I was excited to announce, just a week out from Christmas, that a further 6 per cent increase will be implemented for Tasmanian racing fr...om 1 February 2021. This follows a 6 per cent stakes increase announced last August. This announcement provides enormous confidence for our local racing industry and helps attract further investment. With today’s announcement, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has now well and truly exceeded its commitment to increasing stakes by an average of 4 per cent a year over four years. Stakes in 2018 were $20.75 million and will grow to $24.6 million, an annualised increase of $3.86 million or 18.6 per cent since 2018. Tasracing Australia will consult with the three codes during January to determine the exact distribution of stakes for when they are implemented from 1 February

09.01.2022 With a career spanning nearly three decades in our industry, one of our younger trainers, Susan, has left her mark in the history of our industry. Susan’s knowledge, passion &... dedication for our industry is insurmountable and has earned her the upmost respect from her peers. The tenacious courage & professionalism Susan has demonstrated throughout her involvement with in the industry, especially over the past 12 months is nothing short of exceptional. 07.01.2022 This Thursday night we pay tribute and remember Peter Howlett another gentleman of our industry, with the second running of the Peter Howlett Memorial. The inaugural race was won by the Edward Medhurst Trained Fabulous Baroque last year. ... Peter’s time in the industry spans back to the day the trains ran between Hobart and the northern parts of the state. Dad started in dogs aged at 14 or 15 yeas old recalls Peter’s Son Glenn. Peter’s training career spanned close to six and a half decades with his beloved wife Ruby by his side. Mum and dad went up to Devonport and decided it would be their last trip up north as dad was now 80 years old Howlett said Kill Switch by far was Dad’s best dog. Howlett says, She won 18 of 21, a finalist in the Hobart Thousand, Devonport Cup & Launceston Cup. One of my fondest memories of our time with dad’s involvement within the industry is from the show ground days (1995), we had 4 dogs in the best 8 340 metre race, Vienna Nip got up to beat Classic Brandy, Going Ballistic ran third over Jurassic fourth, giving Dad the first 4. It was a very special night, indeed. Gloated Howlett To honour Dad’s memory with a race named after him is very touching, Dad was a self-proclaimed 340 metre specialist so it is only fitting that there is a 340 metre juvenile race in his honour. It means a lot to mum and the Family, so we are very appreciative to the Hobart Greyhound racing Club for putting on the race. Howlett stated. The Howlett family are still involved with our club and our industry, The Peter Howlett Memorial Is race 4 on the card set to jump at 8:49pm Thursday night at Ladbrokes Park Elwick.

05.01.2022 Next Thursday, September 24th 2020 we pay tribute and remember Noel Vince. The Noel Vince memorial will be ran over 461 meters, its a Best 8 race, nominations for the race close 10am Friday 18th September. Noel worked at Morilla on the grape vines when it was still owned by Claudi Alcorso, Noel Trained a small team of dogs during the eighties & nigties from his home in West Hobart where he resided with his Mother.... "Noel was one of the nicest, genuine human beings you could ever wish to meet" Greg Fahey, our local Hobart Historian Said. Noel only ever trained 2 or three dogs at a time & he was life long friends of Hall of Fame Inductees George and Eilleen Johnson. Greg Spoke of Some of Noel's smarter chasers and said "He raced a bitch called Hi Tech Girl, which won 6 races, and when she retired he mated her to Shantytown [a Hobart Thousand winner] and from this mating this mating came his best dog Hi Tech Boris" Hi Tech Boris raced 76 times for 15 wins 6 seconds and 20 thirds, including 2nd in his Devonport Cup heat in 1996, then won the semi and the Final. Boris also won his heat and semi of the 1996 Maiden Thousand and was 2nd in the Final. Boris also made the Finals of the Breeders Classic, Illingworth Classic and Tasmanian Gold Cup. "A good middle distance dog, he won over 590 at Hobart and 600 at Launceston." Said Fahey From this litter also came Hi Town Shanty, which was raced by Noel's brother in law Wayne Broughton. He won 19 and was the State Sprint champion of 1996 and 3rd in the 1996 Gold Cup. "Noel's other really good dog was Cheeky George" Fahey went onto say. George raced 70 times for 14 wins, 12 seconds and 9 thirds. "He was a top class sprinter over the shorts, but top grade over 500 as well." Cheeky George ran 2nd in his heat and semi of the Devonport Cup and 7th in the Final. He also won a Heat of the Launceston Cup in both 1991 and 1992. Noel was conscripted to serve two years in the Vietnamese War, "Noel wasnt the type of person to let anyone down, especially his country" Fahey Stated. Sadly, later Noel developed cancer passed away in the early 2000's. Its presumed that his cancer is likely linked to exposure to the vile concoction that is Agent Orange e during his tour in Vietnam, like many returning War Veterans of this time. Noel was never Married and is survived by his sister & brother-in -law "Everyone loved Noel." Fahey added. Vale Noel Vince
