20.01.2022 In case you were wondering about the photo of the church interior posted on the 29th June, 2020 - here are the rest of the images. In 1914 the Christian Scientists of Hobart held services in the YMCA building in Murray Street and the Bijou Theatre in Melville Street, next door to the Wesley Methodist church. In 1928 the foundation stone, located in the front foyer, was laid for the new Christian Scientist church in Brisbane Street and the first services were held here in Marc...h 1929. The architect for was Bernard Ridley Walker, grandson of famous Quaker missionary George Washington Walker. The building is constructed from burned brick, which is regular construction bricks that have been fired in a kiln at a higher than normal temperature to give it greater strength and water resistance. The Ionic columns within the porch are concrete. Being very modern for its time, this building included metal-framed windows, electric heating and an inclined floor to allow everyone a clear view of proceedings. An extension to the back was added in 1933 for the Sunday School. See more

15.01.2022 It's been 200 years since the opening of the public hospital in Hobart. Things have come a long was since then. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/medical-care-in-colonial-/

13.01.2022 The next in the series of What Hobart Church is That? Have a guess and in the comments box let me know which Hobart CBD church you think it might be. Here is a clue: it's not Colonial Era - it was built in 1928.

13.01.2022 As the Tasmanian premier has been in the news this week, I thought it would be great to tell you about the first premier of Tasamania - and how they got rid of him. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/getting-rid-of-colonial-t/

12.01.2022 Here is some interesting reading for you on why we have yet another public holiday in March, just a month after the Regatta Day holiday which is this weekend. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/eight-hour-day-who-can-yo/ This article is a little more text heavy than usual, as there is such a rich depth of history behind the event - and very few relevant images. Enjoy!

10.01.2022 Ever wondered about Hobart's coffee palaces? https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/coffee-do-you-want-a-room/

08.01.2022 A beautiful spring day in Hobart - perfect to show off some sandstone detail. Can you guess where this is?

08.01.2022 In banking it's important to be able to identify your target market. The first savings bank in Tasmania identified their ideal customers as those who were poor, vicious and unmarried. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/poor-vicious-and-unmarried/

08.01.2022 A few Hobart balcony and almost-balcony moments in the sun today. Can you pick which buildings they are? Address for each now detailed in image captions.

07.01.2022 12th May - International Nurses Day. As we are all feeling particularly grateful for our nurses today, here is the story of Hobart Hospital's first Matron: Florence Abbott. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/hooray-for-hobarts-matron/

06.01.2022 When I was writing the Field Guide to the Churches of Colonial Hobart, I took a lot of photos. Most of the images in the book were of the exterior view, the idea being that the reader would then explore more on the inside. Getting out to explore Hobart's colonial churches recently has been impossible. So, thanks to Maree Sims for the idea: I shall periodically post here a photo of an interior view of a Hobart church. Just to make it a bit more fun, I won't initially detail w...hich one it is, and it won't be a standard shot either. Have a guess and in the comments box beneath each photo let me know which Hobart colonial church you think it might be. Let's have some fun!

04.01.2022 If you're feeling a little alarmed by the current contagion, this may help to reassure you that Hobart has weathered similar events before this. https://www.hobarthistory.com.au/contagious-hobart/

04.01.2022 How exciting! The Cottage School at Bellerive experienced the fun of immersing themselves in the Colonial Quest, presented by Hobart History. The Colonial Quest has recently been reworked from a guided city walk experience into a self guided program with accompanying class room sessions. More updates to come. https://www.colonialquest.com.au/

03.01.2022 Did you get your tickets? Both tours have sold out already - wow! Thank you, this is very exciting. https://openhousehobart.org//walking-tour-what-style-is-t/ If you missed out on a ticket and you really, really wanted to go, please let me know. I can't run another tour outside of OHH, but I have another little something in mind...
