24.01.2022 I’ve had a big learning curve over the last 11 months and one thing that stands out is that what I promote here may come across as only being for the elite. I want to apologise if I’ve made anyone feel that way. The purpose of Hobart Performance is to make recovery, preparation and good movement in general accessible to everyone and I’m passionate about helping anyone who wants to feel better doing the activity that they love. I’m 37, a father of 2 and an avid trail runne...r and I’m not elite. But I want to ensure that I continue to enjoy movement well into my twilight years. So it doesn’t matter if you are 60 and wanting to prolong your activity or never played sport in your life, when movement can be so simple, its application can benefit anyone and everyone. I’ve spent the last few years intensely focused building on my knowledge of the human body and so the language I use has become normal to me - it’s my way of reinforcing what I’ve learned. And this learning will never stop. But it has now occurred to me through awesome feedback, that this doesn’t necessarily resonate well with who I am and who Hobart Performance is here for. 23.01.2022 Movement is medicine. This is something I learned at the beginning of my career and it underpins everything I do here at Hobart Performance. Take a shoulder injury for example. If you struggle to raise your arm over head or move your arm without pain, maybe we change the perspective. Create a safe and stable environment for your arm and move your body around the shoulder and you may be surprised at what you are actually capable of.... Common scientific literature recommends that a committed runner should be able to perform ideally 25 Single Leg Calf Raises through full range of motion to ensure they reduce their risk of running related injury. Rep target aside, what is more important is the comparison from one leg to the other. If we see a rep difference of >10% then you are at a higher risk of developing a running related injury.... 20.01.2022 Have your heard of @tas_sacc? Tasmanian Sport and Coaching Collective - an initiative created by the very passionate Peter Hope. If you’re a coach at any level of any sport or are part of the team that keeps players and athletes performing at their highest level then this collective is for you. Some may see Tasmania as being at a disadvantage compared to our mainland states/territories with regards to the development of our athletes but I think we can embrace our smaller ...community and see this as a positive for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration. We can only benefit from sharing our experiences as coaches and fitness professionals and the benefit to our athletes is obvious. To help Peter realise his dream I’ll certainly be doing more to strengthen TASSACC’s UNITE. STRIVE. 20.01.2022 Can you do 100 in 2? And by that I mean 100 Lateral Shuffles in 2mins. While the rep target is something fun and challenging it’s not the main focus of this post. I learned many years ago that to improve movement efficiency we need to be able to move well in 3-Dimensions. To simplify it, we as runners spend our time moving forwards, but when we start to break it all down there are also large components of side to side and rotational movement.... There are many ways to work on these planes of movement but the Lateral Shuffle with Cross Over Grip is my favourite as it incorporates both side to side and rotation while giving you a ripper workout. Not only do you need fitness to achieve 100 Reps in 2mins, you also need good Rhythm and Timing - another attribute that will improve your movement efficiency. While I’m using a 6kg ViPR here, you can use anything that is about the height of your naval. This gives you a point of reference and controls your movement bubble. Maintaining an upright position on one leg requires the coordination of many subsystems, with our Lateral Line a big contributor to this stability. To improve strength along this line there are many possibilities but be reassured that the basics are more than adequate. Slow and controlled will yield better results and while the isometric hold is popular, I prefer to incorporate movement. Again, the emphasis is ...on consistency for both sides so if you are noticing a difference in ability from left to right then consider getting yourself assessed to rule out any motor control issues. 06.01.2022 In an effort to get to know fellow peers and like minded lovers of movement, I went to visit Robb at @hobartexercisephysiology. My attendance was also more personal as I have a few niggles that I’m keen for others to assess with their experiences. As we progressed through the session it occurred to me that I’d forgotten the power and benefit of just having good range of motion through simple movements. Sometimes we over think things and because the body is a complex organ...ism, we think our approach needs to be the same. On the contrary, just basic movements are often enough to make us feel amazing. And it was refreshing to feel this. So sometimes its good to get out of your own head and look at things through someone else’s eyes. If you’ve been dealing with persistent niggles then don’t be afraid to change up how you go about resolving them.
