23.01.2022 FOOT STRESS FRACTURES are well known in sport but did you know that in our Hobart Podiatrists & Footwear clinic, we see lots of STRESS FRACTURES in post menopausal WOMEN? Altered hormone levels, often combined with low vitamin d (which helps drive calcium into bones to keep them strong, often low post winter due to low sun exposure) can be the cause. Abnormal foot alignment/biomechanics, excess load in a bone along with unsupportive footwear are common co-factors. ... Stress fractures can manifest as a sudden or gradual onset of pain in the foot and swelling. Confusingly, these won’t show on plain x-ray, until healing is established. 08.01.2022 Because people with hypermobility syndromes (loose joints) frequently develop foot problems ( eg rolled in or flat feet, tired aching feet, joint changes etc) the Podiatrist may be the first health professional to identify that someone has generalised hypermobility of their joints. These conditions tend to run in families and are more common in women than men. Over time, hypermobility syndromes can result in widespread muscle and joint pain and in some cases, can be linked with systemic health problems.
