At its peak it was a 7 storey department store, attracting up to a million customers weekly. The store had an Art Deco Interior with different themes on each level including a food hall, and the Rainbow Restaurant which became a hangout for rockstars such as David Bowie, The Rolling Stones & Marc Bolan of T-Rex fame.... Traveling in a small boat at midnight along the Pearl River to frantically secure Portuguese passports. And then coming to Australia in 1950 as a young man with dreams & aspirations. What was an interior style of the 30s, picked up again unchanged after the War ended. Plus it was was existing inventory waiting to be sold! 03.01.2022 In memory of Private Arthur Edward Wheatley of Grafton NSW, embarked at Brisbane on H.M.A.T A55 Kyarra 16th April 1915. 9th Battalion, Fifth reinforcements. My Great Uncle. He was 22 years old when he wrote to his Aunt from Gallipoli. I could not write before as I could not get any paper. It is very dull living in the trenches as we never see a Turk from one weeks end to the other. I have been here one month and only seen one attack, and that was by one of our companies... to prevent the Turks changing their front. The French and Tommies are seeing some fierce fighting, as we can hear the roar of the battleships guns and rifle fire all day long. Sometimes they do not cease for days. One does not see any tents here, as everyone digs in and lives like a rabbit. He fought in Gallipoli & on the battle fields of France, where he was killed by a gun shot wound to the chest on the 28th April, 1916. He is buried in Merville, France. How poignant & tragic is the letter from his mother Isabella asking for his death certificate. My Grandmother Caroline never got to meet her brother Arthur, she was born February 1916, 2 months before he was killed. We honour his selfless service, a young man with his full life ahead of him, who sacrificed it for our freedom. Thank you Arthur. #anzac #anzacday2020 @ Paddington
